Yesterday the National Museum of Australia opened its "League of Legends" exhibition. It will travel to various points in NSW, Qld & Victoria from now until July 2009, beginning with the NMA itself in its Canberra site until May 11 (free entry!).

I can't recommend "League of Legends" enough - further details & a link to the on-line version of the exhibition via here: http://www.RL1908.com/blog/museum.htm

Don't miss it!

I seriously encourage everyone to see this. It is easily the greatest rugby league exhibition you will ever see.

It's got it all. The trophies (make sure you see the Goodwill Cup, holy crap!), the jerseys old and new, the history... truly a memorable experience.

There is also a small exhibition at NSW Parliament. A few old Jerseys, the trophy, an old ball. Mostly Norths, Newtown, Souths, Tigers & Wests memorabilia.

Sorry to bump an old thread but I visited this exhibition on the weekend in Melbourne and highly recommend it to any league fans and sports lovers in Melbourne. Thanks to all involved in putting it together.

Where is it? I'm off to Melbourne tomorrow and may get chance to call in to see it.

It's at the National Sports Museum at the MCG. I can't remember which gate you have to go to but it's located in the new Northern Stand. Once you get in the museum, the exhibition is behind and to left of the AFL section in a separate room.

Just as an aside, hopefully the ARL will loan some of the memorabilia to the NSM to form some type of permanent collection. As is to be expected of a sports museum located in Melbourne, the AFL section is huge (the largest component of the gallery - bigger than cricket and Olympics), however normally Rugby League is limited to a couple of windows. Any tourists visiting the Museum - and it is the National Sports Museum and therefore representing sport in Australia - would probably not realise the popularity of the game in Australia, even if that popularity is restricted to half of the country. I believe that the AFL contributed to the costs of its section, so I don't think that it is unreasonable for the ARL or NRL to do the same, unless financial constraints prevent them from doing so.

Only some of the items on exhibition come from the ARL - most of it has been loaned by other insitutions, clubs and individuals, for the purpose/duration of the exhibition. Once it's over, the "collection" is no more.

If and when sufficient RL funds ever arise to contribute towards a permanent RL museum/exhibition, it would serve a greater good to RL to have it sited in NSW or QLD or even Canberra rather than Melbourne, simply given the return on the financial investment and likely local public interest from which to draw visitors from.

Totally agree that a "national" sports museum should have a strong RL component, but the reality is that it being based in Melbourne raises various constraints.

As for the money, the previous Federal Liberal govt allocated $10m for a RL Hall of Fame, but the subsequent Labor govt revoked that spending in Feb 2008.

I agree that any potential hall of fame and museum should be located in NSW, however it is disappointing that the only rugby league presence in the museum normally is one display case containing a Storm premiership jersey and few photos.

With regards to the funding, I was aware that the government revoked the $10 million, which I don't disagree with to be honest, however if the next tv contract is larger, hopefully a small portion can go towards establishing a permanent venue to display some of these treasures. I am sure that some of the owners of the items being exhibited will be willing to loan some of these items to such a museum. I know that a number of former AFL players, in addition to clubs, have loaned items to the AFL display.

We should have both. The national museum should have a section on RL and there should be a dedicated RL museum in Sydney. Then the Sydney museum in Sydney could loan items to the National museum nad have changing exhibits.
