A former rugby league player, regarded as one of the game's best halfbacks, has been arrested in Wagga Wagga after allegedly soliciting a 17-year-old to fake a robbery in which he was the victim.
The 34-year-old man was behind the bar when a knife-wielding youth, wearing a balaclava, allegedly robbed a Wagga Wagga hotel on February 18.
The 17-year-old bandit was arrested immediately after the alleged event and questioned by police. But he did not reveal the full details of the robbery, accepting the charges on his own.
His accomplice - the alleged mastermind of the operation, who was also a hotel staffer at that time - was arrested more than four months later.
"I can only imagine that when they started their investigation they weren't satisfied with all the facts, and decided to continue looking," a police spokesman, David Rose, said.
"The premises were fitted with CCTV, but as the case is before the courts we cannot go into what that revealed."
The Sportsmen's Club Hotel, where the robbery took place, changed hands three months ago.
The previous owner is now in Vanuatu. The present owner refused to comment other than to say the man is no longer employed at the establishment.
The victim, accused of staging the robbery, was taken to Wagga Wagga police station yesterday and charged with public mischief, procuring a child to carry out a crime, and three counts of larceny as a clerk.
He was granted conditional bail and will appear in Wagga Wagga Local Court on August 17.

League star in 'fake robbery plot'

Former rugby league player Craig Field has been arrested in Wagga Wagga after allegedly soliciting a 17-year-old to fake a robbery in which he was the "victim".

The 34-year-old played halfback for Manly, South Sydney and the Wests Tigers, and now coaches the Wagga Brothers in the Group 9 competition.

He was an employee at the bar when the alleged robbery, by a knife-wielding youth wearing a balaclava, took place on February 18.

The 17-year-old bandit was arrested immediately after the alleged event and questioned by police. But he did not reveal the full details of the robbery, accepting the charges on his own.

Field - his alleged accomplice and mastermind of the operation, who was also a hotel staffer at that time - was arrested more than four months later.

The present owner refused to comment other than to say Field is no longer employed at the establishment.

Field was taken to Wagga Wagga police station yesterday and charged with public mischief, procuring a child to carry out a crime, and three counts of larceny as a clerk.

He was granted conditional bail and will appear in Wagga Wagga Local Court on August 17.

It's hard to believe but he was one of the game's hottest properties in the mid-90s. So it would probably have been more accurate to say "for a couple of seasons in the mid 1990s Craig Field was considered one of the best halfbacks in the competition".

I remember we were chasing his signature for 1996 when we were putting together the team of stars to propel us back into the winner's circle.

Yes i remember back in the mid 90s how he was talked about...but then so was Jason "Take me to the top" Martin in the early 90s.
Craig had flashes of brilliance, but also flashes of Paul Cariage....the thing is the Paul Cariage moments were the ones that overshadowed his good moments.
He could never ever be regarded as one of the great 1/2backs.

never heard that one ????

'Twas on A Current Affair (or a similar show - I can't remember which it was now) a few weeks back. He was running a gym, took everyone's membership fees and declared bankruptcy. Started up another gym elsewhere and did it all over again. Didn't seem to show any remorse either.

He had a "habit" of going hard at "the line" when at the Tigers. Cost him a fairly lengthy suspension if memory serves me correctly.

Craig Field was a very good player on his day. Inconsistent, but still a good player nonetheless.

One of only two halfbacks we have ever had who aren't mediocre.
