League stars to go to the olympics?

What would you guys think if the League were to issue a challenge of some sort to the Union boys to see the best team qualify for the Brazil Olympics?

We all know Inglis, Hayne etc would destroy the no-names they'd have competing. At worst it would be embarrassing for the two to be compared.

Would you support the leagueies representing us? Would it just be a gimmick? Would the quality of our players be a leg up for Union or would the countries where it matters realise the vast difference in ability between the standards in League and Union players on average?

To play you would have to be registered with the ARU, no thanks!

Good coup for RU though sadly.

I can't believe they even made Rugby 7's an olympic sport. It's not even a real sport and the best guys in that game are playing the real game, Rugby Union (or rugby league).

Really? I find that hard to believe.

Given it's the sports governing body that picks the team (ie - the ARU) then try a little harder to believe it.

Jesus some people have a complex about this sort of thing. League has a fantastic club competition. Union has a massive international profile.

Get over it.

Get off you high horse mate. I thought because it was the Olympics, maybe players wouldnt have to be registered to the ARU. But by all means, conitnue your tirade dolt.

League players wold fail at the Olympic 7s because of the rules and the need to ruck, maul, and perhaps, scrummage and be involved in lineouts.

In 7s players have to be multi dimensional and are require to do a lot more of the forwards hack work - you know the bit that creates all the penalties which ruin the game these days.

Further more snooty nosed Union Refs would find good cause to penalise them for anything they can.

Forget it.;-)

Look I had huge concerns about them putting up golf as an olympic sport, but sevens rugby! Thats like making mini putt the golf version that becomes an olympic sport.

This just belittles the olympics and gives sevens a status that it truely does not deserve.

Its pretty simple. 7's is a festival game, played as a "filler". Its an abbreviated version of the real sport. 15 man a side RU is the sport.

The olympics is the best of the best....except soccer. under 23s. Why bother, so I suppose there's a precedent, but at least they play the full version of the game.

It would be like having a 50 metre, 100m sprint. ONly run half the distance, people can't pay attention for the full 10 seconds. Lets make it shorter, less complicated, simpler......Golf too. An olympic medal in golf! Bring back ball room dancing.

I loved the olympics. I watch sports I generally hate like basketball, others I'd never watch like archery and hockey. Boxing there has some credibility, but I'll never watch 7's and it just makes the whole thing seem less serious, corny even.

Ever watch beach volleyball? That's an abreviated version of the game.

I reckon it'd be good. Have you watched 7's lately. It's been great seeing teams like Kenya up there beating the top tier nations.

FIFA and IRB, or whatever the rugby federation is called, have done the right thing by not devaluing their own World Cups. Interestingly though, considering soccer at the Olympics has an age cap, they still large turnouts at stadia, and I imagine that won't be any different in London or Rio.

Arrrrrrrr no. I don't watch sevens. Top tier nations getting beat by crap ones............right. That is my point.

But fair point about beach volleyball. Thats a joke too. What you are saying is that pretty much the olympics now lacks credibility. Go on, put in rollerskating, bmx, (hang on, they've got that haven't they).

OK, I give up, 7's will go nicely with all that rubbish. I'll have to decide whether I dress up like a clowns, superman or a nurses at the next olympics now.

Let's face it. If equestrian and synchronised swimming can get a gong...surely 7's can.

Two different sports with two different governing bodies. The fact that indoor volleyball and beach volleyball are BOTH in the Olympics tends to suggest they're considered different sports. At best beach volleyball is a derivative form of the game.

I'd Union 7s isn't quite at that level. I really think it's a shame they put 7s in rather than the full form of the game.

I read something that said the ARU would be sending a full strength squad when the 2016 olympics finally roll up eg Super 14/Wallaby players

So the poor bastards who play 7's rugby week in week out won't even get a look in
