Agree Suity

i was working at Ireland v namibia the other night. It poored rain the entire time, and (we all know that you even get wet in the underground car park at the SFS!), yet 35,000 people stayed and watched the game.

Plenty of Irish sport followers there, but also the more broadminded "sports fans", who love a good spectacle and can appreciate skill and enjoy watching some of the beter athletes on the planet liek Wood, Hickie and O Gara.

Keith Wood is an absolute legend.
BTW, you forgot Brian O'Driscall. I'd love him to be partnering Jamie in our centres.

ture. O'Driscoll is quality to.

having said that, the namibian fullback wouldnt get at start at Southern Districts 5th grade side, but in fairness to namibia, they are missing probably their 4 key players, who all play key positions!

Yeah, great spectacle...but

Union in so BOOOORING.

Kick..tackle..penaty..kick..tackle..penatly..kick..tackle..penalty..kick..tackle..penalty..kick..tackle..penalty..kick..tackle..penalty....

My humble suggestions to the IRB for improvement:

* Reduce it to 13 players per team - for starters, you DO NOT need those silly training wheels on the scrum
* Scrap those poofy linouts (too much like AFL )
* Prevent the mindless kicking by giving teams six tackles on a row to do something with the ball - ie: RUN WITH THE BLOODY THING !!
* As soon as a player is tackled, he must be released and play the ball, which will keep the game moving. Stop all those big fat forwards flopping over the ball and having a break while everyone waits ages for the ball to come out or a penalty to be given
* Keep the defenders back 10 meters from the ruck so as to encourage the attacking team to RUN WITH THE BLOODY THING !!
* To prevent wild cricket scores, need to put a bit of perspective on the scoring system. From now, tries should be 4 points, conversions and penalty goals are essentially the same thing so should both be two points, a field goal is a dropkick, so it will only deserve 1 point (All the more reason as it will stuff the English !!)

A much better game of rugby will develop

mmmm..I applaude your lateral thinking godfather. But I can only see these changes having some benefit in the short term.In the long run I can only see it leading to smaller crowds and the game only being played competitively by one or 2 nations ;-)

Indeed Cupid Chick ;-)

His rule interpretations sound like a hybrid game of Rugby League to me.

Brian O' Driscoll & Jamie Lyon would be the best centre pairing in the world if they where together at Parra!!!

I also think Stirling Mortlock would be a sensation in League.

I am a HUGE league fan. Then again, I am open to most sports (I also love soccer and Union; AFL I don't like so much, but I enjoy watching IF the Swans play). I really enjoy Union, but the best game by far I think is league.

But a lot of people say they don't have skills. I think their goal kickers are skilled, their forwards are not wasted (a scrum means something unlike in league, a maul is legal, etc.).

There are only certain players which would suit league, but those are elite players.

I agree with you!

I love everything from League to a good game of Union to Cricket to Gridiron to Soccer & even the occasional game of AFL!

It doesn't matter if one chooses Union....this doesn't make him any less!!

As far as im concerned any good Union player would be a good League player why??.....because our games are similar & there professional athletes!!....so they can adhere to another game!!

Look at Brian O' Driscoll??.....this guy would be a absolute gun in League why?? beacuse he possess the needed characteristics to be a star of the game eg Speed, Skill, Agility, forshight, initiative...these are the same skills that make a player like Darren Lockyer a great player!!

Some former great Union players

- Wally Lewis
- Michael O Conner
- Ray Price
- Ricky Stuart

Just to name a few,

It's no coincidence that not only are these 4 players good.....they where exceptional & where previously before League Union players!!

The RWC is a result of the best marketing exercise in Australian history. Why else would 35k turn up to see Namibia v Romainia or whoever?

The only difference, globally betwen Union and Leagus is South Africa and france. In the UK,league outdraws and outrates in dommestic comps. Wigan v St helens would always outdraw Harlequins v Bath.

Remember the RWC in 2000? The worst weather in British history (and that's saying something) plus the best rugby team on earth (Kangaroos) in top form, and the Union oys bagged the absolute shit out of it. En masse they scoffed at Morocco and Lebanon. 3 years later they give us friggin Namibia v Uraguay!

Seeing how ex Souths reserve grader Duncan Macrae can be a gun in the NSW Union side, the reverse would be a West Harbour reserve grader (John Hopoate) usurping Danny Berdueris. therefore, I reckon a truckload of League players would suceed in Union. Fat Barry Ward, through superior League training and conditioning, would blitz 'em. So would Cayless, Webcke, Todd Payton, Robbie Kearns etc. Imagine Hindy as a union backrower in their 'hug' tackles?

Gregan would never have made a League half - he isn't quick enough

I say give it to 'em hard, heavy and often, and defent the gerat honour and traditions of Morrocan and Lebanese Rugby League!

BTW, let's not forget that a Russia v USA test jagged 40 000 spectators in Moscow this year. And Eurpoean Union did what????

thats why i am hoping France has a real dig this weekend against the Roos. A good showing by france and a loss to the Brits will mean big things for intenrational League, at least in the short term hehe.

Union has nothing on League except marketing. That is one thing League has always fallen short on since the 90s rolled around.

Welsh Union is on the brink of collapse and already 6 teams in the Welsh Union comp have started proceedings to defect to League. Russia is a League nation. USA is going professional in 04 or 05. Japan is an each way prospect at the moment, and will fall to whichever code throws the right amount of money at it and gives it the best international profile, and both codes are considering doing so atm. A New Zealand failure at this Homo World Cup will give the Warriors a chance to further cement their place in Kiwi hearts with a strong 04, and a second NZ team in 07 (as being currently proposed) will do wonders for the game over there. Lebanese league has the backing of the head of state over there. Canada is also 50/50 and in the same position as Japan.

We are in NO worse of a position than Union internationally. It's just that Union is the "traditional" game and Union propoganda holds sway over many rugby nations, most especially France where League will never again raise its head because the Union boys hold the politicians in their pockets. (Having said that there is still a push for a French team to enter the ESL, just like French and Russian teams enter the Challenge Cup now).

Don't doubt that there will be big crowds over in England for the matches. They smell blood, and are already in the midst of "Rugby Fever" that can be switched to League quite easily considering that is the only international game being played over there atm. And the last Challenge Cup final drew a whopping 4.4 million viewers which was phenomenal.

Like Suity said, they just have a wicked Marketing scheme that totally outscores whatever we put up. The game, players and fans are inferior to League, but with Club footy being the main money maker in League as opposed to Provincial and International in Union, League bodies are not willing to shorten the season (and thus take less gate revenue) in the hope that a revamped International scene could make enough money to go around and cover the costs.

i actually have a plan for a revamped season that includes a massive rep schedule and reduced Club schedule that would go off like a double bunger, and maybe one day I might share it with yas. I also have a great marketing idea for a League World Cup, but He-Man and the Masters of the Universe is coming on right now so maybe another time :)

Look im a League boy through& through and would love nothing more then League being more popular then Union but??.....besides the marketing strategies of the Union boy's you still need the numbers!!

Rugby League has a massive presence in the Noth of England, PNG & Auckland....where as Union has a massive presence in All of England, France, Ireland, Wales, Scotland, NZ, South Africa, Pacific islands!!

Japan, Canada are not an even money bet as to whether they go to either League or stay with Union......it's Union Union Union there!!...why do you think Japan has got the money to lure big name players to there game over there now??

I agree with you on France!!....it's a dead issue...to political over there since the 50's & it's amazing how the game there is still alive considering Union's pushover tactics there!!

Wales regardless of whether are bankrupt can still generate 72,000 people to there games at the Milenium dome.....a RL international played at Wrexham last year between England & Wales in RL drew 6000 people!!...i will agree though Wales is an untapped market & could be more League orientated in the future with the demise of the Union game there & core base of League followers present there...i hope so!!

Russia??....my favourite contry beside's Ukraine of course :D ....there's enourmous potential there!!....there are investors lining up to take the game to the next level there, Playing numbers is now closing on 30,000 registed partcipants, great average crowds to there local comp & off course the size of the Russians & amount of great athlete's this magnificent country has produced over the years...everyone from Ivan Drago to Sergai Buka......i would love nothing more then Russia to become a force in League.....i'd have mixed emotions as to who to follow though :?

Did you go to the Sevens? The Russians got a bigger cheer than any other team. A competitive Russian team against the Roos in Sydney would draw 40,000 easy

Long way away though, but I hope to see the day

Unfortuanley No i didn't go....i heard about it though!! :D

A competitve Russian side would not only draw 40,000 people to internationals in OZ but?? everywhere around Europe!!

Russia has an enourmous influence on all the surrounding regions there....espically the former sates of the USSR!!...If Russia became huge expect Ukraine, Poland, Geogia, Latvia, Lithurania, Moldova, Belarussia, Kazakstan etc to all be following suite!!

I honestly don't think it will take as long as you think.....the Russian game is rapidly improving more so then most established nations.

Why do League fans always bash Union? Why do Union fans always bash League?

They are both great, but in VERY different ways and for different reasons.
