Let's talk about girls of games

When it comes to girls of games, most people instantly think of Lara Croft - as in she is the character who revolutionised the industry forever.

I must object to that. While I have played my fair share of Tomb Raider games, and enjoyed most of them, there is no way that Lara is the one who started off the chicks revolution for me.

Here are a few who were way ahead of her:

Tyris Flare

Some of you probably have no idea who she is by name... but she just happens to be the bikini trotting chick from the Golden Axe series. Seeing her run around in that outfit on the Megadrive was well before Lara Croft came on the scene via Playstation.

Blaze Fielding

If you don't know who Blaze Fielding is, then you were denied a childhood. It was never a difficult decision which character to pick while playing Streets of Rage on the Sega Master System. Blaze was faster and simply had better moves to use than Axle and Adam.

Mileena

I was playing MK2 long before Tomb Raider. I always loved playing the Ninja characters, but Sub Zero couldn't hold the fort forever - enter Mileena

Karen/Karla

She wouldn't be a character that most people are familiar with, but Alien Storm was a game I enjoyed on the Mega Drive. Karla was the character I loved playing. Dressed in Yellow (or Red, depending on the region), Karla's zero suit was really out there!

Hannah Dundee

Who? You ask? Hannah is the only female character from Cadillacs and Dinosaurs. C&D was a game based on the 1993 TV Series.

All these girls hit the machines before Lara Croft did and I prefer them to her. That's not to say that Lara doesn't have anything to offer, it's just that I believe other girls who hit the control pads before she did have had a bigger impact on me than she did.

Good Calls! I have gone blank with the names without googling, I'd add the Bounty Hunter lass from Metroid as one of the early heroines. Otherwise they seemed to be damsels in distress or strip poker games ;-)

Still, Lara is still a cool chick, and Tomb Raider the original was an awesome game. Other games with woman hero characters I liked were Beyond Good & Evil, Eternal Darkness, Silent Hill 3, Resident Evil, and the atmospheric D.

Chung Li from Street Fighter
Also there - in fact she'd probably be #6. When it came to Street Fighter, I usually liked playing Ken. I didn't do much Chun Li but I think that when it came to fighting games, Chun Li is probably #1. Obviously I preferred MK over Street Fighter back then.

Samus Aran must get more than a shoutout here. She predates just about all these idiots, first debuting in Metroid (1986) if the game is completed in under 5 hours.

Nina from Tekken can grind her stilettos into my testicles any time she likes.

Some came out soon after Lara Croft...

Julia Chang (she's my favorite Tekken chick)

Jill Valentine

...and some people might not agree with this, but I like Darci Stern (from Urban Chaos). Let's face it, rookie cop, black chick, fighting to take down a mysterious criminal gang and corrupt mayoral candidate. This game should've been bigger than what it was.

Briar Rose from Fable: The Lost Chapters... Wait, this is a thread for the most punchable female game characters right? I was sporting a partial when I got to kill her.
