Illusion, you're right mate. The game has passed him by. The best coaches in the modern era, in multiple sports, are "player whisperers". Almost the main criteria for a coach (assuming there is an acceptable level of technical knowledge) is soothing players ego's, managing stress, communicating disappointing news in a empathetic manner etc. From the outside looking in, Shane Flanagan does not appear to possess these attributes. He seems like a throwback to the "tough taskmaster" mould, and modern players do not respond to this. I know this first hand, because as a +30 year cricket coach, my "old tough" style did not work for the modern youngsters, and I was driven out of my enjoyment of the role. I was sicking of managing ego's and parental interference. Why have you dropped my son to 3rd Grade Coach? Because he has scored 55 runs in 10 innings. What does he have to do to get back in 1st grade? WTF??? How about score some runs, stopped kicking stones, be a good clubman, turn up to training. Can you call him and tell him you still really like him Coach? No. But that is what modern sports coaching is about. Moulding the person. Our next coach has to be a calm, measured, respected individual who can (a) calm the dressing room, (b) get the boys to start throwing the ball around, (c) get some smiles on the players faces. Everyone in the Club looks completely grey faced. You can smell the stress, and Flanagan is radiating it every minute of the day. You don't think the players pick up on that?
