The Warriors are expected to release front-rower Suaia Matagi in the coming days to join a Sydney NRL team.

Matagi is contracted through to the end of the season but after playing in each of the Warriors' 24 games last season has made only one brief NRL appearance back in round one this year.

With Kiwis test prop Ben Matulino and Queensland Origin rep Jacob Lillyman the preferred starting pair and emerging duo Sam Lisone and Albert Vete commanding regular bench spots, Matagi has had limited opportunities to impress.

It's understood several Super League clubs were keen on signing the powerful ball-runner but he wants to remain in the NRL.

The 27-year-old would leave the Warriors as a fan favourite after overcoming a stint in Manawatu prison to successfully rebuild his life.

After starting out on the Auckland club circuit with the Te Atatu Roosters and Mount Albert Lions his good form was recognised with a spot in the Auckland representative team in 2009.

He went on to be join the Auckland Vulcans the following season and was a leading performer despite being able to play only domestically until the end of the 2012 season due to travel restrictions.

Matagi continued his progress with the Warriors before making his NRL debut against the Bulldogs in Wellington in round nine of the 2013 season.

He made 11 appearances that year before representing Toa Samoa at the 2013 World Cup and was chosen to represent the Kiwis at the 2014 Four Nations.

Not surprised after being overtaken in the pecking order by Lisone and Vete this year.
Probably behind Rapira, and potentially Gubb as well

Hope he does well wherever he ends up

Matagi also has to contend with the best propping prospect the Warriors have had in years with Tofofoa Sipley coming through to. Sipley is a genuine big man at 116kg+ and the way he played against the Junior Kangaroos manhandling them and his NYC form he is a bonfide NRL front rower in the making.

Along with Manu Mau a real redemption story. His off field work should continue whoever he goes to. Unfortunately e has been overtaken at the Warriors. I wish him all the best.

Best of luck to him.

Always get a little nervous with mid season signings because injury can strike at any time, but he'd be what - 7th in line behind our current four, Rapira, Lousi?

Even we can't have that much bad luck.

Love what he's done to turn his life around but pretty expendable for the Warriors at this point.

Best of luck to him.

Frank Pritchard has flown in for a quick visit - will/should the Warriors sign him for next season?

He was given a chance from the Warriors to shine and hardly did a thing wrong. His inspiring turn around will be contagious no matter where he goes. All the best brother

I think a great role-model for those that really need to turn their life around. His story is inspiring. Unfortunately superceded by the youth system to his detriment. Never really let us down. Wish him the best.

Good bloke, but never got over second season syndrome.
Bit of a shame because he started out with a real bang.

SST won't be affected at all. That guy's a freak and has been an immense addition.

Matagi will provide valuable depth during Origin and beyond. We're only one injury in the forwards away from having to play Willie Manu following the dramas with Kennedy and Meehan.

It'll be interesting to see how Matagi goes in a much more professional environment and with a better coaching staff. Hopefully he kicks on again.
