Canberra have tough games against Penrith (at home) and St George Illawarra (away), while the Titans face a virtual mission impossible against the Tigers next week before taking on the Eels.

lol, Dragons face Penrith last round. Good work David Beniuk!

thank goodness.

We want Canberra losing both their games - not playing you blokes and getting a guaranteed win!

One thing in our favour against the Rooster next week is that they have already cleared out of the spoon danger zone... Yes, they are in good form with two wins from two, but maybe they'll just fall off a bit against us, knowing that it doesn't matter if they lose now?

I can't see the Titans getting up over Wests, so we've got two good shots to get off the bottom, if the ciach and players want it enough.

Even if we escape the spoon by a point, it's still a shocking result for the season and all the excuses in the world shouldn't deflect the need for the club to seriously step up a gear for the whole of next season.... if Kearney can't make the finals in 2012 his contract simply shouldn't be renewed imo.

"if Kearney can't make the finals in 2012 his contract simply shouldn't be renewed imo"

there's your problem right there...how many coaches have you guys gone through the last 10 years?..look at the Tigers and Sheens..he came on board when the place was a total rabble..won a comp after 2 years then 4 lean years out of the 8...(despite the protestations of a lot of the fairweather supporters)the club stuck by him knowing he was building something good to last for a while and now it's coming together again...keep this in mind when you get tempted to want another coaching change, Kearney (as well as Sheens) is respected by those in the game who have earned respect themselves...i'd go with that instead of the howling of the messageboard panic merchants...this year's done and dusted for you guys...support the guy and give him time to put it together
BTW..yes..i am a Tigers supporter

The only flaw in your argument is that the W/tigers have made the semis 3 times in the past 11 years (2000-2011) and we've made the semis 5 times. Granted that you won the comp in 2005, but we were runners up twice. So you guys can hardly profess to be the NRL template that should be emulated. In fact one could argue that we have been (overall) more successful than you guys, so maybe you should have sacked a few too. ;-)

I can't believe you are commending the success of long term coaches and used Tim Sheens as you example and not your namesake.

You missed my point..but i probably didn't make it too well. I guess it depends on what you get out of following a club all your life...(note) WT were a painfully formed joint venture so the first few years you can write off...all i'm saying is if asap success is the only thing that matters then that's ok..but is it worth it if the price is constant drama within the club every season that success doesn't come ? a couple of other examples then..Ivan Cleary at the Warriors?...how about Neil Henry?..how long would you guys have given him...2 seasons? Last word on Sheens..varying opinions about his coaching for sure but he's sure developed a helluva lot of players over the years..not to mention quite a few good coaches as well (mostly thinking ex Canberra) Anyway..once again i hope SK gets a fair go

Not that many - 3 by my count?

Difference being that Sheens had a solid first grade coaching pedigree - 3 premierships under his belt and maintaining a 50+% win from his very first year with Penrith, across 26 years of coaching (including 5 years coaching the rabble that was North Queensland in their starting years).

Kearney in first grade has... a 22% win rate. Sheens has earned a long tenure at Wests Tigers, Kearney is yet to show that he has earned anything other than his current contract (that I do hope he sees out, and experiences increasing success). If we don't make the semis in 2012, he's not worth extending beyond the third year imo.

Would we let him see out the 3rd term?

This. A glass half full post won't work with me on this one. First spoon in 45 years. The board, the players and the coach should hang their heads in shame.

39 years dude - it's nowhere near as bad as you think

Smith
Taylor
Hagan
Anderson
Kearney
???

If we're not going to keep him past this contract we'd be better off turfing him at the end of next year. Look how good the Dragons are going with Bennett on his way out.

If we go bottom 4 next year Kearney shouldn't see out his contract. If we go top 8 we should give him an extension. 9th-12th we should wait and see I guess.

Surely we're due?

Under the salary cap every club should get it once in 16 years. Since Melbourne, Brisbane, North Queensland and the Warriors have structural advantages that means the other 12 clubs should get it every 12 years.

Someone has to get it. Why not us? It could be the end of the karma payback from the glorious 80s.

We might finally get to start with a clean slate.

Ah, forgot about Hagan . I don't count Taylor, as he just stood in temporarily after Smithy chucked his tantrum.

I'd imagine that if we're bottom four at the 2012 half-way point, Kearney will be "given permission to test his market value"... if we're 9-12th at the end of 2012, he should be told he won't be getting an extension - whether he throws a tanty and walks like Smith is up to him.

But if he can show he can steer a side into the top 8 in 2012, and keeps them there for the first half of 2013, then imo he's earned his extension (for a further 2 years).

Ooh I can think of a couple. ;-)

I could name them. But then you'd only deny it.

Probably best we all pretend you're excited about our future success under Kearney, Ossie and the board.
Hmm, not sure you're on the right track there? I'm excited about future success under whoever we have at the time as much as the next person... I'm just waiting to see some positives before putting people on pedestals.

No coach deserves to be judged on their first season's results. No matter how good or bad they are. Because the results of a single season don't reflect even a fraction of what club coaching entails.
If we follow this logic, then those already judging him positively are also barking up the wrong tree until next year? Why then, when someone simply reserves their "excitement" do you think that equates to wanting people to fail

Yes I do. I'll probably have to live with those demons forever bart, but I seem to be coping just fine at the moment.
You reckon?

Like Brian Smith's final year, it'd be his choice if he leaves early when told there is no extension for the year after.

We'd have to have a contingency plan, and look to appoint any future coach in advance, and that person should be ready to take the reigns if a current coach didn't see out the contract. If that's the scenario I'd get that future coach involved in retention and recruitment for the next year straight away.

But I'm hoping Kearney gets over his teething problems during his contract, and shows that he can motivate and coach a team with essentially the same spine and pack that got us to the grand final in 2009 - and next year we'll have a better spine - to at least be competing for and making the 8 before any contract extension is mooted.

9th to 12th next year FFS is not good enuff!!!!

If SK submitted his plan for us to be spooners this year and 9th to 12th next year I would be absolutely f**king astounded.

With the team we have next year nothing short of the finals is acceptable.

Please don't write anymore 9th to 12 th bullshit. Because it's just that, bullshit.

We accept mediocrity at this club, it's ok, there's always next year.
