Lote Tuqiri in frame to take Jarryd Hayne's Test spot

Source: The Daily TelegraphPARRAMATTA'S Dally M Medallist Jarryd Hayne will need to fend off a precocious challenge for his Australian wing spot from Wests Tigers' former Wallaby star Lote Tuqiri. The Daily Telegraph can reveal Tuqiri - just seven games back in the NRL - is locked in a three-way battle with Hayne and St George Illawarra's Brett Morris for the Test wing positions in Australia's side to play New Zealand tomorrow week in Melbourne.

Hayne and Morris favourites, but the in-form Tuqiri has considerable support.

Selectors will announce the Australian side at 5.30pm on Sunday at Campbelltown after Wests Tigers' match against the Sydney Roosters.

A blockbusting performance could just see Tuqiri do what many thought impossible - win back his Kangaroos jumper.

Asked whether Tuqiri was being discussed, Australian selector Bob McCarthy said: "You'd have to think so. Billy Slater will be fullback, Hayne is there, so is Morris. But Lote would have to be right in the mix too.

"We will try and come as close to the side that won in England last year [Four Nations], but there are a few out injured."

Steve Roach, the great Balmain and Australian prop, has no doubt Tuqiri will be considered.

"He's a finisher," Roach said. "Lote is as good a finisher as anyone in the competition.

"And he is going as good as any winger in the competition.

"There's no reason why he shouldn't be there."

Selectors are aware Hayne has not been able to repeat his 2009 magic, but he may have enough runs on the board to be chosen.

Melbourne players Greg Inglis, Cameron Smith and Billy Slater will be picked, despite being implicated in the Storm's salary cap fiasco. Jamie Lyon and Israel Folau are queuing up to be Inglis' centre partner, with Folau having a slight edge.

Glenn Stewart, Ben Creagh, Sam Thaiday and Paul Gallen are in line for back-row selection.

Thaiday and Gallen are likely to be chosen.

Roach said of the forwards: "I'd have Ben Creagh somewhere in there but I'm not sure exactly for who. Sam Thaiday and Creagh are the two form forwards.

"Another player I'd like to see there would be Luke O'Donnell.

"He could play prop and then you could have another back-rower on the bench. Michael Weyman is another who will be close to selection."

I know most people here hate Jarryd Hayne but seriously, what has Slater done this year to be a walk up start? Inglis has been ordinary, why should he get a spot????

This article should be about more than just one player imo.....

Jarryd has been good for us this year and i think better than Slater over all, i think Slater deserves the fullback position but i also think that Hayne deserves the wing position too......i would just like to see more plays revolve around him rather than the other side of the field!!

Except in the case of Hayne, right? That is my whole point, he has said that Lote might get his spot, fair enough he has been the best winger so far but why is Slater still guaranteed his position? Why can't he lose it to the current best fullback? Coote is probably the form fullback so we should choose him if we choose Lote going on this article......but they are only singling out Hayne and no-one else.....why?

Inglis has been real poor this year, Folau not much better. Lockyer has been dreadfull.
If this is gonna make up almost half our backline, kiwis got a huge chance

I'm pretty sure if you read the rest of the article Hayne isn't the only one likely to lose his spot. I didn't see Hindy's name mentioned for the 2nd row spot

I 100% agree, it isn't necessarily to the article it is more the headline that gets me tbh......

I am just wondering why the DT have singled out Hayne? Surely if they are going to pull things out their a$$es it should have had Slater or Inglis's name in the headline, surely the Storm are bigger headline pullers atm over Hayne?

Judging from this quote, there shouldn't even be a story.

Typical crap once again.

Suity

Yep spot on, a nothing story by the telegraph. On a side note, Mark Geyer has denied making quotes in the story about willie mason in the DT today.

Do you think if Izzy signs with the Rebels, they will bother picking him? From memory they snubbed Gasnier?

I'd go:

1. Slater
2. B Morris
3. Jennings
4. Tuqiri
5. Hayne

Personally I think Inglis has been rubbish so far and Izzy looks to be defecting

QLD has said that if he does sign with Union then he most likely wont be selected for this years state of origin, have to wait and see about the test matches.

I actually reckon Jarryd has been really good this year. His amazing feats late last season combined with the fact he is heavily marked now seem to indicate he hasn't done much.

But he's right up there for tackle breaks, running metres and has set up a few of our tries.

Course, they'll never choose him over Slater. And Slater's defensive positioning is miles ahead of Hayne's. But for sheer game-breaking capacity, I'd honestly say Jarryd's position - on the wing or at fullback - should be obvious.

Wait and see once we win more games the paper is going to be all over Hayne, and in the test match they should pick the same team as last game that won ... unless injury plays a part ..

Inglis and Folau leave Test selectors on edge

Time to sine... Storm star Greg Inglis will have to play against the Cowboys this weekend to prove his fitness for next week's Test. Photo: Getty Images

UNCERTAINTY surrounds the Australian centre positions for next week's Test against New Zealand, with Israel Folau's anticipated switch to rugby union set to end his league representative career and Greg Inglis needing to overcome an ankle injury and play this weekend or risk being left out of the team.
The centre pairing for the game at AAMI Park in Melbourne on May 7 looked set a week ago, with superstar Inglis an automatic selection and Bulldogs try-scoring machine Josh Morris a hot favourite to join him. But then the Melbourne Storm salary cap scandal hit and Morris sustained a fractured eye socket playing against Brisbane.
Folau became an option but the selectors would leave him out of the team to be named on Sunday if, as appears likely, his signing with the Melbourne Rebels is confirmed ahead of that. And the Herald understands that if Inglis does not take the field against North Queensland in Townsville on Saturday night, the selectors will be unlikely to pick him for a Test that will be played just six days later.

Inglis was named but missed the Storm's game against the Warriors last weekend. ARL chief executive Geoff Carr said last night that while the league would not issue a directive to the selectors regarding Folau if he switched to union, it was the job of the selectors to ''pick the best players and the best team, while looking to the future''. Australia will play in a Four Nations tournament at the end of the season.
Queensland State of Origin coach Mal Meninga made it clear where he stood on Folau yesterday, when he said: ''I'm probably in a position where we will probably pick somebody else. If Izzy makes the decision to go away from rugby league, that certainly jeopardises his position in the Queensland side.''
Inglis probably needs to play against the Cowboys not only to prove he is physically fit, but also to show that, while he is naturally taking it hard that the NRL stripped the Storm of two premierships and blocked them from competing for this year's title as a result of the club cheating the cap, he is still in the right frame of mind to play Test football.
Regular Australian centre Justin Hodges remains unavailable with a long-term injury, leaving Manly's Jamie Lyon, Penrith's Michael Jennings and North Queensland's Willie Tonga as centres in contention should one or both spots open up - along with Wests Tigers star Chris Lawrence, as a potential bolter.
While there is doubt over the centres, the other five back line players from the Australian team that beat England in the Four Nations final at Leeds in November, are set to be returned for the game against the Kiwis.
They are fullback Billy Slater, wingers Brett Morris and Jarryd Hayne, five-eighth and captain Darren Lockyer and halfback Johnathan Thurston.
There is a slight concern over Thurston because he looked like he was still a bit inconvenienced by a shoulder injury when he resumed playing last weekend, but as long as he gets through the game against the Storm without a worry he will be included.
But the forward pack - apart from hooker Cameron Smith, and Petero Civoniceva in one prop spot - is far from settled. The knee injury to Ben Hannant, who started the game against England, has opened up the other prop spot and, while there are several contenders, there is no standout choice. Meanwhile, competition for the second row and lock spots is very strong, as usual.
Kurt Gidley, who has had two games back for Newcastle after suffering a knee injury in a pre-season trial, is likely to get the bench utility role as long as he has no problems in the game against Brisbane at Suncorp Stadium tomorrow night. But the one-match suspension incurred by Melbourne prop Brett White, which prevents him from playing this weekend, is likely to cost him a spot in the squad.
White missed the start of the season with a shoulder injury and has only played one NRL game.
