Tuqiri talks in code on contract
By PETER JENKINS
March 6, 2004
DUAL international Lote Tuqiri said last night he would delay any decision on his future until after the Super 12 series.
Speculation surrounding Tuqiri has intensified since Wallabies flanker Phil Waugh signed this week an extended deal to keep him in Australian rugby until the 2007 World Cup.
Tuqiri, 24, and off contract at the end of this year, has been elevated to the status of hottest property in the game and a major retention priority for the Australian Rugby Union and the NSW Waratahs, with a three-year deal on the table to stay in the 15-man game.
But the former Kangaroos star, who established himself as the Wallabies' leading winger at the World Cup four months ago, has yet to settle on a short-term career path that could involve a return to rugby league.
"I won't be coming to any sort of decision soon, certainly not before the Super 12 series is over," he said.
"All I am concentrating on at the moment is playing good footy with the Waratahs and improving further on my efforts at the World Cup."
One option for Tuqiri is to play the code-hopping caper twice more before the next World Cup.
It will not have escaped his management that Tuqiri could accept a one or two-year rugby league contract then be back in rugby union in time for the next tilt at the Webb Ellis trophy in France.
But NSW Rugby Union CEO John McKay believes salary-capped NRL clubs will struggle to match the monetary terms currently on offer to the one-time Brisbane Bronco. Tuqiri admits the World Cup was a unique experience and one difficult to rise from for a new season.
"I found it pretty tough coming back in the first couple of weeks after our break," he said.
"The World Cup was pretty draining, both mentally and physically. But the young blokes at NSW certainly picked up the spirits of the Wallaby guys when we did get into training.
"Not knowing your job is safe at the Waratahs these days really fuels the competitive spirit."
