Lower Leagues clubs

I think you're a bit too stuck in the NRL mentality if you think 'creating' a team out of thin air like that would be a success. Barrow (1875), Whitehaven (1948) and Workington (1945) have all been around too long each with their own proud history, for some "artificial" franchise to just come along and take over.

So what we have right now are 3 average lower league teams, your idea would create 4 diluted teams AND 4 identity crisis(es). Some would stay true to their old teams, some would defect, equaling failure for all parties.

Country NSW and Qld are some of the most fanatical RL areas on earth, but all have small populations so will never have a team in the NRL. That's life, doesn't mean they lose interest in League.

Cumbria could have 3 successful NL1 teams, but i don't think they will ever have a strong SL team.
That's spot on IMO.

Oldham's too far from Salford to make it practical or appealing to fans (distances in the UK are considered a lot further than the same distance in Australia would be as we're a much smaller country). Swinton's the only club close enough to Salford to possibly work

Swinton ground any good?

Like Bowes says, people in the UK just don't like to travel. We've seen a big decrease in St Helens attendances this year due to playing at Widnes, and that's less far than it would be for Oldham to Salford. Also, I think there's a psychological difference between Parra playing at a different Sydney ground and a team playing in a completely different town. It would be more akin to if someone like Newcastle was based out of SFS (obviously the distances are off but you get my drift). If Oldham were based at Salford, they would end up being thought of as another Salford team and probably just disappear over time.

And despite what people have said, I don't think there's that much mileage in a Cumbria team. There are certainly more obstacles than just squabbles about mergers etc.

Perhaps Newcatle playing out of Gosford is the comparison?

manly @ the olympic stadium would be a better comparison if where being realistic mileswise

true, but i was scaling it up to take into account of the size of the countries and more basing it on Geographical location.

Oldham sticks out the top of Manc like Manly in Sydney, and Salford is down towards the bottom, a bit like Cronulla. Maybe its more of a St George position, or where the tigers play?

The important point being it would never happen! :D

salford like cronulla?

geographically if oldham is manly, wigan would be parramatta and inbetween the 2 salford would be someone like canterbury or wests....

what i'll do next week, cos i've got a week off work and i'll be bored, is i'll overlap 2 maps of the greater manchester/northwest region and the greater sydney region and plot all the clubs...if you imagine oldham as manly as the eastern most club and blackpool as penrith as the westernmost club all the english & australian clubs inbetween near enough mirror each other distance wise

If Oldham perform well, fix their newly acquired home ground and get consisitently high attendances, I reckeon they're a good chance of admission to super league like Salford (probably if the RFL wishes to extend the league to 16+). A Manchester derby would be awesome.

They are not a 'good chance' at all. They are virtually no chance in the near future unless circumstances change drastically.

And that's what I'm hoping. For the first time Oldham has their own home ground since 1997, as a result, I hoping Oldham will benefit form increased gate receipts, if the stadium gets fixed to an acceptable level.

The ground barely meets Championship requirements though, it's like a park field. I don't think Spud will disagree when I say it's one of the worst stadiums in the league. Yes it's good that Oldham actually own it, but to get it up to Super League standard would pretty much require building a new stadium from scratch. Additionally, Oldham are in Championship 1 and are hardly setting that comp on fire. It would take a massive change of fortune and at least 10-15 years before they were even in a position to bid for Super League, and that's a best case scenario.

what you lot don't know about "our new ground" is the queens estate owns half the land, literary the queen owns half the pitch and the land behind it ...so we'll never be able to build on it.....it will forever be a training ground and nothing more.....

we've spent 14 years pestering the council to find us some land and when they give us some land they know full well we can't build on it........wankers

Oldham's ground doesn't nearly meet Championship criteria. It's alright for Championship 1 but they couldn't get promoted from there.

Salford is near the bottom of Manc. So maybe like Souths?

Oldham is sticking out of the top? So a bit Manlyish?

Penrith like Saints, Parra like Wigan.

Guess that makes Warrington Canterbury? Widnes Tigers?

So we all decided, i need that map!! :D

Our name is a little misleading, as we are not a southern Sydney club. South Sydney refers to the suburb of Sydney, or in essence what is the CBD of Sydney. Redfern, where the club was founded and is based, is south of the CBD in the inner city. Cronulla and St. George (when they existed as a stand alone entity) are southern Sydney clubs from true geographical stand. Search Redfern on google maps and you'll see what I mean.

I worked in Redfern and found it a bit of a dump esp those block of flats from Souths clubhouse that looks like it;s some shithole in east London lol.
