Luai or Edwards?

Edwards for his leadership qualities and his defence organisation.

Most halves would be able to organise a left side movement like Luai.

Unpopular opinion but Luai. I hope we can keep both but can Edwards keep on doing what he is doing till 2025 and beyond; I have my doubts.

Having said that, I think Luai is more likely to leave, and there is big chance both do.
Interested in panthers fans opinions. Why do you think Edwards can't keep going?

This is just a media construct. The club has started repeatedly it wants to keep both.
The club has stated they want to keep both but has also stated that they could get more elsewhere; ie, they would have to stay with us for less than they can get elsewhere. Both players have said they want to stay, but qualify that by saying their managers will look after it.

My pessimism is based on the club repeatedly saying we will lose two players a year because of the salary cap. It was Capewell and Burton the first year, Kiks and Api the second, Critta and Leniu the third. This year we have already extended To’o, Yeo and Leota, and apparently Martin has agreed long-term, so my expectation is at least one of the two can’t be kept.

And that is not some ‘woe is me’; I think it is the salary cap playing a role is spreading talent, and we have had an amazing ride from benefiting from a great crop of juniors that have outperformed their contracts over recent years.

And in terms of Edwards slowing down, there is no sign of it at the moment but his game is based on power and fitness, and the only undefeated opponent is Father Time.

Edwards. He is up there with the best fullbacks in the game, and a big game player (should have 2 CC medals). Can break tackles and starts sets off well. He would add value to any side.

Luai is a downhill skier and if he was playing for the Tigers or Dragons he wouldn’t even be considered for rep honours.

I seem to have the total opposite opinion on these two that everyone else does.

Luai: This guy is actually a f*#king gun. He, Munster and Walker are neck and neck the best 3 five eighths in the game. Deadly running game, terrific ball player, great short kicking game and I never see the dude miss a tackle. I get that hes a pretty unlikable dude, and I guess that effects peoples opinions on his game. Put it this way, if Penrith were to lose he or Clearly for a finals series theyd be much better off losing Nathan. Its been shown that what he brings can be replaced, I dont think they can bring another Luai up too easily. Anyone else find it a coincidence a 30 year old journeyman in Sorensen is suddenly a gun after he replaces Kikau? Its because of who is passing them the ball.

Edwards: Has become the most over rated player in the game bar none. Look the guy can play, but hes nowhere near what gets made out. I find it hilarious when people call for him to replace Tedesco for NSW. What exactly will he do better? Teddy is still making 200ms a game, which is all the Edwards fan club talks about. He doesnt bring anything in attack and I see him have one clanger mistake every game (tonight with the horrendous pass to Turuva on a kick return). He would be smart to stay at Penrith on $500-$600k for his career. If he goes to somewhere like the Dragons or Knights on big money he'd get blasted for being 'under whelming' as a big money player in a poor team and end up in the ESL in 3 years.

I kind of agree with you assessment of Edwards; he has gone from one of the most under-rated to one of the most over-rated quite quickly.

I do think that he would be beneficial to a Dragons, Knight or even (date I say) Tigers both for his work ethic both on and off the field and his ability to direct the defence from the fullback position.

Oh I think hed improve them, but theyd probably have to pay $1m for him and at the level theyd need him to play to justify that I dont think he has in him. Like if the bloke played for the tigers the last 2 years would we have moved up the ladder at all? I doubt it. Having a bloke like Bula there is a better option for the Tigers (in no way is he a better player, just for a lower team youre better off taking a risk on someone like this)

The Edwards fan club that I've heard talks more about his ability off the ball than running metres, as in organising the defence. He is a major reason this team has the best defence in the NRL era, or very very close to it. As a running fullback he's good, but hardly exceptional.
