Noone is condoning what Carney did by going after Lui.

Carney did the wrong thing as well, but the difference is when Carney went for a drive while drunk, he didn't do it to intentionally cause harm to anyone.

Lui intentionally and repeatedly struck at a woman, and not just any woman but the woman carrying his child.

What Carney did was stupid. What Lui did was unforgivable.

And don't forget, Carney did get deregistered for a period, Lui hasn't even been punished that much.

So the way most people see it is this player is being treated less severely for a more serious conviction.

Drink driving is a bad crime. Assaulting a woman IMO is the worst thing a man can do short of paedophilia and murder.
