Congratulations to Brooksy. He could have went elsewhere to ply his trade twice. Firstly when the rest of the big four f**ked off and again after he won the Dally M halfback of the year and was in contention for player of the year.
But both times he stuck loyal. The first time taking a pay cut so Cleary could have the chance to fill the gaps left with quality players and build a side capable of going deep into the finals. Instead, Ivan hands out fat contracts to his stable mates before promptly buggering off to Penrith leaving our cap and roster stuffed again.
Now Madge is having another crack at doing what Cleary failed to do and after a couple of misfires like Jennings and playing Doueihi at fullback, he's starting to build some depth and get some quality players in key positions as well as building a succession plan.
We've had one game against a premiership contender with a makeshift five eighth and after not being able to wrestle the game back on his own after a diabolical run of play early in the second half, it seems like every man and his dog is calling for his head. Things don't look much better next week against the Roosters who have had the wood on us for as long as I can remember, but I'm sure Madge will have a bit more patience than most of the people on this forum.
Now I'm not saying Brooks is going to bust out and prove all the haters wrong, but one thing I will say is this: Those of you who reckon Jock Madden would have done any better than Brooks last week are absolutely having yourself on. Madden was completely outplayed in trials by Volkman, a player nobody had heard of. A bloke way down in the pecking order at the Roosters who has Lachlan Lam, Sam Walker and Drew Hutchinson ahead of him. Maybe we should be looking a Volkman instead.
