It was nice to see Brooks given the gong for rookie player.
It was also nice to see both Farah and Mayer genuinely congratulate him at their table.
While you probably wouldn't expect otherwise, it seemed an honest, united and warm congratulation from both of them.
All good to see !

Correct me if I am wrong but he would be our first rookie of the year right?

Jim Leis (Wests) 1980
Cameron Blair (Wests) 1988
Will Robinson (Balmain) 1991
Glenn Morrison (Balmain) 1996
Luke Brooks (Wests Tigers) 2014

You are correct as usual but I was just referring to Wests Tigers :D

Gee Will Robinson, there's a blast from the past

Did his best in a shambolic side. Hard to control that side this year.
Solid but unspectacular year. Hardly rookie of the year.

Big expectations next year.

Alex Johnston, Sione Mata'tuia, Dylan Walker, Dylan Napa....

Johnston - A winger on the end of the backline of the best team in the comp. Go have a look at the tries he's scored, pretty much every one is him just falling over the line. Tough gig that one. Everything given to him on an absolute platter.

S Mata'utia - Played 7 games for Gods sake!

Walker and Napa aren't even eligible.

Try again.

Correct me if I wrong but Johnston is no rookie , played most of 2013 and also Napa had a few NRL games under his belt.

Edit.. Johnston debut this year. :)

Whether he was on the end of a good backline or not is not the point. Johnston really should have been rookie of the year.

Brooks was ok but not great.

He didn't really have much competition, so I think he deserved it purely on that basis alone.
Rookies (played min 10 games)
Luke Brooks 20 games
Alex Johnston 17 games
David Fusitua 12 games
Fa'amanu Brown 11 games
Dallin Watene-Zelezniak 10 games
Isaah Yeo 10 games

No it is exactly the point. He was fed silver service all year. Yes he scored some tries but the majority of them were simple catch and put downs. Seriously go and watch a package of his tries this year, you might surprised how little he had to do. You and I would have scored most of them. And when he didn't score tries he went completely missing. He's not a worker and doesn't do the stuff like a Mansour type.

Brooks plays in the most demanding position on the field and had to marshall around the most spastic backline in the comp. Of course he didn't dominate every game but he still single handedly won a few for us.

All fair points, but Johnston's 17 or 18 tries in said games is hard to go pass.

Hard to go passed if you only look at stats.

Based on the games I watched, of the wingers I was more impressed by Dallin Watene-Zelezniak than Johnston in some ways - playing in a less dominant team he had less clear cut opportunities but looks the more complete footballer.

Comparing halves and wingers is a fools game.

Given they rate Brooks a star half of the future, and that he was decent at a pretty tender age of just 19, it's no surprise they gave it to him over a fine young finisher.

The truly hilarious thing is the usual suspects can barely even raise a positive word about this. Bright side boys.
