So who would come into the side if Grothe or Tahu are injured? If you think the back 5 of Hayne, Inu, Grothe, Tahu, Reddy will all play every single game next season you're dreaming. You need to have at least 7-8 outside backs at the very minimum who are capable first graders.

Back in '01 we had Hodgson, Burt, Moodie, Lyon, Vaealiki, Richards, Donald, and until he was released Grothe. Depth is important for a strong side, not just the best 17.
I undrestand that but with Etu and Gardener? getting a go we can handle it .......

I, for one, will be very disappointed if Luke Burt is not at Parra next year. A great clubman, and a really nice human being.

who do we let go then? preferably we keep him, and Grothe etc, but i'm under the impression a few need to be squeezed out - apart from the obvious players.

HJ seems very confident that Burty is not going anywhere. Not sure if it is more hopeful but he seems confident.

I think also with Etu's re-signing, this provides a little depth outwide. I too would like to keep Burt as depth and versatility, but i doubt he'd wanna play second fiddle.

 HJ was also confident 3 years ago that he'd have a job at the High School of his choice, he's still waiting for the ph call

Good clubs have to make tough, but correct recruitment decisions, yet I am sentimental about Burt and his contribution to the club.

This example hits home to me why we need better 10 year loyalty provisions. I would like to see how many clubs have 10 year players. Off the top of my head, Burt, Cayless and Hindmarsh have been at Parra for 10 years straight or more. I don't see why we cannot have each player have $100,000 shaved off the cap - why only have one player to have the dispensation??? - make it two slots at $100k each, or be able to divide the $200,000 between the three players - it might be enough to keep them all here longer.

It encourages loyalty, does not give you an amazing advantage, and means that clubs can have legitimate 'one club men' which is good for the game (and was very much a feature of League in the 80's).

isn't he teaching already?

On and off. Ron's right, though, but that's the fault of the system (read: NSW Teacher's Federation). Come a Liberal victory in NSW and the system will be fully changed so that Principals have autonomy regarding employment. I'm content to wait until then. I'm only 32 and so still have decades of employment left, and if things go the way they should I won't be retiring (read: won't be allowed to retire) for another 40 years or so, so what's the rush?

(Although if the Libs lose yet another unloseable election, I'm pretty sure I'll go crazy and start shooting people)

I can absolutely state with 100% confidence that as of last week there was absolutely zero talk of Burt being released or even given permission to negotiate. Considering I was given assurances that I'd be informed if the situation changed and I've heard nothing, I'm still 100% confident at present that Burt will be with us in 2010.

I hope we don't treat guys like Burt and Cayless poorly.

People may point to Brisbane getting rid of their aging champions as an example of the ruthless attitude required to win premierships, but it creates a very poor culture for the younger players and that's come back to bite them big time. I reackon guys like K Hunt, Dave Taylor etc who are more interested chasing dollars than staying at the club would have influenced by the way guys like Gilly and Petro were treated towards the end of their careers.

I'd have thought Brisbane were one of the more loyal clubs in the NRL, and the players treat them with an equal loyalty. I doubt Dave Taylor left cause of the money, he just didn't want to be playing QLD cup every week as he was when he signed with Souths.

My Dad's a Principal HJ, and he can't wait for the autonomy of staff selection either. I have seen the idiots he has to deal with....I don't know how the bloke gets up each day without a mental breakdown....there are some great teachers in the system and then there are some nuffies too!
