THE Dragons have scored a major coup in the lead-up to the finals, signing New South Wales State of Origin assistant coach Luke Phillips - effective immediately.

Several Blues players rated Phillips’ influence as a key factor in the recent series win over Queensland.

A former Roosters grand final fullback and first grade referee, Phillips has been on the Panthers’ staff for the past two seasons.

But sources have told WWOS that Panthers head coach Anthony Griffin made little use of Phillips’ knowledge, opening the door for his switch of clubs this weekend.

Phillips’ manager, former Wests halfback Josh White, said the ex-Roosters, Manly and Cowboys fullback was in hot demand.

“Quite a few clubs had heard that Luke is a first grade coach in the making and expressed interest in him,” White said.

“But we thought that the Dragons were the best fit and he is grateful to (Panthers supremo) Phil Gould for letting him go now.”

Phillips will work in a dual capacity as a defensive coach and advisor on matters pertaining to refereeing.

Having refereed alongside many of the current group of officials, he knows their likes and dislikes - something that can give teams an edge.

This could be a great addition to the coaching smarts in the club.
The question is will McGregor listen.
He had JD for a whole season and basically blanked him.

Has he had any proven track record for success as a coach who gets results consistently?

If not, why is everyone happy about this when they bag Mary for the same perceived attributes.

I'm not saying he won't be a good influence, but sounds like double standards if that's the case. Hmmmm

I don’t believe it is double standards at all , but regardless lets look towards the future , as the man can only be of benefit to our club .

He's a complete outsider with zero ties to the Steelers or Saints factions.....that's the big difference.

No one hardly brings up that point when bagging Mary for his coaching abilities. Over and over again though ppl say that Mary has no real coaching creditials and that we need someone who does instead.

But here Phillips has no real credentials as well and everyone is happy he is coming in.

Just so I'm clear, I'm not unhappy he is coming in...perhaps he can lift them team a few notches or even better more. But using the same reason to warmly welcome one coach and screw over another is double standards and illuminates people's prejudice.

Its double standards. Mary is constantly pulled down for not having proper experience and credentials for a coaching role. Phillips comes in for a coaching role, no real experience and credentials and he is warmly welcomed.

Im all for it if it works well. But the prejudice is clear to see nonetheless.

Mary can do nothing right for many many people.

Ozbuck with all due respect, the article does say that Luke Phillips has been at the Panthers for the past 2 years and was also good enough for Fittler to offer him an assist role with the NSW Origin team. So he has some experience and was in demand from other clubs also. I don't believe other clubs were chasing Mary when he got flicked by Bennett's arrival.
Mary has done extremely well this year, but he needs the right help around him to improve. Hopefully this is a positive step forward.
