THE Dragons have scored a major coup in the lead-up to the finals, signing New South Wales State of Origin assistant coach Luke Phillips - effective immediately.
Several Blues players rated Phillips’ influence as a key factor in the recent series win over Queensland.
A former Roosters grand final fullback and first grade referee, Phillips has been on the Panthers’ staff for the past two seasons.
But sources have told WWOS that Panthers head coach Anthony Griffin made little use of Phillips’ knowledge, opening the door for his switch of clubs this weekend.

Phillips’ manager, former Wests halfback Josh White, said the ex-Roosters, Manly and Cowboys fullback was in hot demand.
“Quite a few clubs had heard that Luke is a first grade coach in the making and expressed interest in him,” White said.
“But we thought that the Dragons were the best fit and he is grateful to (Panthers supremo) Phil Gould for letting him go now.”
Phillips will work in a dual capacity as a defensive coach and advisor on matters pertaining to refereeing.
Having refereed alongside many of the current group of officials, he knows their likes and dislikes - something that can give teams an edge.
