Ever hear the old saying, “too many cooks spoil the broth”?

Assistant coaches to McGregor at Saints: three.

Agar, Hornby and Young.

Phillips’s apparent appointment means he’s the fourth one to come on board.

(How many does McGregor need?)

Realising it’s sometimes difficult to draw parallels between sports, recently appointed Australian cricket coach, Justin Langer, was adamant he would take on the role provided he had sole autonomy over all three formats of the national side (Tests, ODIs and T20s). His reasoning was that he didn’t want the players to receive different messages from too many sources while doing their best to represent their country.

“Alfie” is a smart bloke, who knows what he’s taking about.

With Phillips joining the club, there’s a real chance the NRL squad will be over coached.

Sorry, but in my mind, “major coup” is serious hyperbole write by a gossip journalist whose track record isn’t very accurate.

From memory I think the roosters have something like 3-4 times as many paid coaching staff as the dragons do. Sure it’s hyperbole, but too many cooks?’

When we were recruiting for a first grade coach, one of the targets was Clearly.
On the surface it seemed like a great opportunity to install a long term coach with some team building experience and superior technical knowledge.
Cleary's stipulation was that he be given autonomy and a free reign to build a new St. George dynasty.
The powers that be did not agree with this and Cleary refused to commit under a controlled and stifling regime at St. George.
Instead, we hired McGregor and have surrounded him with assistants and crutches in the hope it improves our chances of jagging a premiership.
While I think that Phillips can contribute positively, can you imagine any of the top coaches tolerating these kind of appointments?
5 years of this just doesn't engender any confidence.

No one hardly brings up that point when bagging Mary for his coaching abilities. Over and over again though ppl say that Mary has no real coaching creditials and that we need someone who does instead.

But here Phillips has no real credentials as well and everyone is happy he is coming in.

Just so I'm clear, I'm not unhappy he is coming in...perhaps he can lift them team a few notches or even better more. But using the same reason to warmly welcome one coach and screw over another is double standards and illuminates people's prejudice.
Not double standards - just standards.
Before you overflow with indignation just check McGregor's coaching CV before he was appointed FG coach at this great club.
NO credentials - zero, zilch and should never have been appointed in the first place.
The only ones being screwed over are the fans - 5 years and counting.

Yes - point well made- presumably somebody among the existing three asst coaches or Mary himself was responsible for defensive drills and helping individual players with their own defensive issues and reads etc before this appointment. No one obviously wants to put their hand up and take responsibility for the backline defensive "collapse" against Melbourne- (no other word for it). Perhaps I would have more faith that there will be real improvement if they did.
