Started rewatching Aliens last night. Man, I'd love to see the series revisted. The futuristic, industrial, and entirely isolating feel of the whole 'world' is just fantastic.

In a way, it's similar to The Thing (original). Fear through isolation and alienation.

Any remakes or sequels would probably end up like Friday the 13th or A Nightmare on Elm Street.

#4 - The Empire Strikes Back (1980)

SW_-_Empire_Strikes_Back.jpg

Director: George Lucas
Starring: Harrison Ford, Mark Hammil, Carrie Fisher, and Billy Dee Williams.
Awards: Academy Award for Best Sound Mixing.
Votes: 37 points from 5 voters

Far out-stripping the rest of the Star Wars anthology in terms of votes, the Empire Strikes Back is one of the most beloved science fiction movies of all time and is regularly thrown out there as proof that sequels don't have to suck.

Introducing the world to such concepts as icy Hoth, being frozen in carbonite, Boba Fett, and that admission - Empire is a tale well told and full of action, excitement, and iconic cinematic moments.

I may just need to rewatch it soon...

Good job Misanthrope!

I'm in the process of collating LU's Top 50 versus the rankings on IMDB. Even though LU's sample population is infintesimally small compared to that of IMDB, its quite interesting.

I will post a countdown 50 to 1, comparing LU's choices to that of IMDB when you get to Number 1.

My picks for the Top 3.....

Shawkshank Redeption

Silence Of The Lambs

Saving Private Ryan

I'm pissed off I didn't vote in the first place.....grrrrrrrrrrrrr!!

IMDB has Grave of the Fireflies at 104, instantly disregarding the rest of their list.

I am no way a movie buff and have only seen 20 of the 47 movies on LU's favourite list so far.

I find it interesting that two in the list are Japanese animated movies - Akira and Grave of the Fireflies. I haven't seen either of them and being animated doesn't hold much appeal personally.

I believe that everyone should watch Grave of the Fireflies at least once, it's something you'll never forget for as long as you live.

That is a strong recommendation for something I'd usually not bother at all with. I take it you mean that it will be remembered in a reasonable way, not in a Salo way.

Definitely not like Salo at all, there is nothing presented purely for shock value, like any anti war film it simply shows how the innocent victims of war, in this case a teenage boy and his young sister being the main focus, deal with being in a war torn environment. It is consider by a lot of people to be one of the best anti war films ever made, and I haven't met a person yet who didn't get emotional watching the film play out, and that's after being told what the ultimate outcome of the two main characters will be in the very first scene.

#3 - The Godfather (1972)

Godfather_ver1.jpg

Director: Francis Ford Coppola
Starring: Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, James Caan, Robert Duvall, and Diane Keaton.
Awards: Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Actor (Marlon Brando).
Points: 46 points from 4 voters

Probably one of the most polarizing films in history - men adore it and women just don't get it. It's like Field of Dreams, but less boring.

Laden with ridiculously good acting and directed by one of the great's operating at his peak, this adaptation of Mario Puzo's timeless novel about the mafia is a regular on top lists due to its epic scope, gritty performances, and underlying ideals of familial loyalty.

I have tried watching it twice and fallen asleep both times. Maybe third time will be the charm.

OK, you people have got me intruiged about this one so I'm downloading it.

Since it has been reported as such a powerful and moving film, would it translate well using real actors instead of amine?

There is a live action Japanese version, though it tells the story from the point of view of a different character and acts more as an epilogue than anything.

Some Pommy film studio is making a live action adaptation of it as well, only god knows how that'll turn out.

#2 - Fight Club (1999)

Fight_Club_poster.jpg

Director: David Fincher.
Starring: Brad Pitt, Edward Norton, Helena Bonham-Carter, and Jared Leto.
Awards:
Points: 48 points from 5 voters

It might not be a film for the ladies, but Fincher's take on Chuck Palahniuk's career making novel of the same name was (and remains) a huge hit with men around the world. Visceral, biting, witty, and sometimes just bizarre - this treatise on masculinity in modern society and the sheer insanity of the society we're living in achieved critical and cult success.

Who among us hasn't found some point of reference or familiarity in the nameless narrator's aimless, directionless life. The film is something of a rebel yell against our consumer society, but it never feels preachy or forced.

Backed by a gritty soundtrack from the Dust Brothers and confronting performances from Pitt, Norton, and especially Bonham-Carter, this one is a justified #2.
