MANLY'S Jamie Lyon will be granted exemption from all forms of representative football. The former international will be informed of the decision, via letter, by the NSW Rugby League tomorrow.
In his 10th season of first grade and with 14 Origin and Test matches to his name, 27-year-old Lyon petitioned the NSWRL for permanent exemption, citing family and lifestyle reasons.
"I had a chat to Des Hasler and we put our letter in for exemption a few weeks back. Hopefully the board appreciates my request and there aren't any dramas," Lyon told The Sun-Herald. "I really just want to focus on playing for the Sea Eagles.
"I've already achieved more in rugby league than I ever thought possible and with a young family to bring up, I'm really just happy to do my training, come home and change some nappies. It's not a snubbing. I still love my footy but I'm happier without those commitments."
NSWRL guidelines state a player's career span of 10 years is cause enough to consider representative exemption and with Lyon's already impressive state and national achievements taken into consideration, general manager Geoff Carr said the board had reason to seriously consider the request.
"We sent a letter back to him on Thursday, but I can't divulge the context of the letter without him first getting it," Carr said.
"He went through the appropriate measures and sent us a letter requesting representative exemption and I only signed it yesterday. He's entitled to get the letter first rather than find out the decision through the media.
"But there are guidelines, not rules, to granting exemption that include 10 years in the NRL, 30 years of age, injury history, service to the game - there are seven or eight points. They all add up so when the board considers an exemption they look at all the guidelines and then make the call.
"There were three of four players who were approved a few years ago - one was Brad Fittler - who were right at the back end of their careers and wanted to extend their club footy. That's when we decided to come up with the guidelines because it was a bit ad hoc."
Meanwhile, despite guiding the Sea Eagles to the premiership last season with a scintillating display at five-eighth, Lyon said he's comfortable with his move to the centres to make way for Newcastle recruit Chris Bailey.
"I got really comfortable at five-eighth in the end and I wouldn't mind getting back in there, but I'm enjoying being back in the centres," Lyon said.
"Dessie and I spoke about it at the start of pre-season and he explained it was for the team, because with Steve Bell and Steve Menzies gone we were a bit skinny in the outside backs - mainly the centre position."
