Lyon gets Rep exemption

MANLY'S Jamie Lyon will be granted exemption from all forms of representative football. The former international will be informed of the decision, via letter, by the NSW Rugby League tomorrow.
In his 10th season of first grade and with 14 Origin and Test matches to his name, 27-year-old Lyon petitioned the NSWRL for permanent exemption, citing family and lifestyle reasons.
"I had a chat to Des Hasler and we put our letter in for exemption a few weeks back. Hopefully the board appreciates my request and there aren't any dramas," Lyon told The Sun-Herald. "I really just want to focus on playing for the Sea Eagles.
"I've already achieved more in rugby league than I ever thought possible and with a young family to bring up, I'm really just happy to do my training, come home and change some nappies. It's not a snubbing. I still love my footy but I'm happier without those commitments."
NSWRL guidelines state a player's career span of 10 years is cause enough to consider representative exemption and with Lyon's already impressive state and national achievements taken into consideration, general manager Geoff Carr said the board had reason to seriously consider the request.
"We sent a letter back to him on Thursday, but I can't divulge the context of the letter without him first getting it," Carr said.
"He went through the appropriate measures and sent us a letter requesting representative exemption and I only signed it yesterday. He's entitled to get the letter first rather than find out the decision through the media.
"But there are guidelines, not rules, to granting exemption that include 10 years in the NRL, 30 years of age, injury history, service to the game - there are seven or eight points. They all add up so when the board considers an exemption they look at all the guidelines and then make the call.
"There were three of four players who were approved a few years ago - one was Brad Fittler - who were right at the back end of their careers and wanted to extend their club footy. That's when we decided to come up with the guidelines because it was a bit ad hoc."
Meanwhile, despite guiding the Sea Eagles to the premiership last season with a scintillating display at five-eighth, Lyon said he's comfortable with his move to the centres to make way for Newcastle recruit Chris Bailey.
"I got really comfortable at five-eighth in the end and I wouldn't mind getting back in there, but I'm enjoying being back in the centres," Lyon said.
"Dessie and I spoke about it at the start of pre-season and he explained it was for the team, because with Steve Bell and Steve Menzies gone we were a bit skinny in the outside backs - mainly the centre position."

For mine, I think it's just a cop out - a soft option for a player that is IMO still one of the most overrated in the game.

i dont see what the problem is.... hes not contracted to rep teams... why should he be MADE to play for them.

but even worse than that... who the hell would pick a bloke who obviously doesnt wanna be there...

Exactly. Every other young player would give his right arm for the chance. If he was picked and didn't want to play he wouldn't put in 100% anyway so why pick somebody who clearly doesn't want to be there.

He'd better work on getting his mob off the bottom of the table before he thinks about winning another grand final.

Mate, it's not really resting on his shoulders to lift the boys from last place now is it? It lies with the forward pack building the momentum and platform, and the halves chiming in to give the backs some quality ball.

After todays performance tell me some N.S.W centres that deserve a spot over him. He dominated them out wide all day, and if you can't admit that then I don't know what to tell you.

And on a side note, I'd worry about your own team friend, they were lucky against the Rabbits. I'd be careful to dig the boot in to us before we see what your side does under fairer conditions. Concentrate on your own affairs, and players. Afterall they might follow Lyon and join a club with an actual shot of winning the premiership :)

I'm not digging the boot into him or the club. I was just being a smartass. That was all.

I have no problem with this and neither should anyone else, really. He's done nothing wrong. Last year when he quietly and respectfully asked to be excluded for private family reasons, it was Bellamy who (unable to handle the pressure) informed the media. What followed was the inevitable beat up in the papers along with choruses of whinging and moaning from disgruntled Parramatta fans. Really, you lot.........move on.

It suits me fine that he'd rather concentrate on playing for Manly. Personally I rate him very highly. He can play five-eighth or centre and he was instrumental in guiding Manly to the Premiership last season.

As for the rest of you blowhards who want to crap-on about placing football above everything else, and in Jamie Lyon's case, his wife and kids??? GET A LIFE!

Why did he just not say he as retired from rep football like other players do.

Because it was initially rejected I believe. On the grounds he is still young and never had any serious injuries. Pretty stupid they can reject someone's representative retirement, but for some reason it's part of a player's contract.

Who's bagging the bloke? Nobody cares by the looks of it and nobody cared last year either. He's obviously going to cop a bit of a bagging because it's considered by a lot of people that representing your state or country is the highest honour.

Any criticism directed at Lyon is absolutely nothing compared to what other sports people would face if they said they weren't interested in rep selection. If Michael Clarke said he didn't want to play tests for Australia any more he'd be absolutely hammered. Harry Kewell has copped it plenty of times in the past for skipping Socceroo clashes. Let's not forget the reason why everyone hates Mark Philipoussis originated when he declined to play in Davis Cup ties.

Lyon should not be forced to play, and good sense by the board in hopefully accepting his reitrement, but if you think that Lyon has been treated badly the media and fans then think again because any backlash is nothing compared to what other sportspeople have suffered.

:-({|=

Lyon's in my opinion is one of the most under-rated.

But You know we started last year poorly and won - go figure......
