Mad Dog Returns to the Castle

Friday, July 21, 2006 - Newcastle Knights

Former Newcastle crowd favourite, Adam “Mad Dog” MacDougall, is to become a Novocastrian again after agreeing to terms with the club.

A member of the 1997 & 2001 Premiership winning teams, MacDougall will call EnergyAustralia Stadium home again for at least a year, with a further 12 month option on his incentive-based contract in 2008.

“Adam’s return to the club provides us with the experience and strike power that any NRL club requires,” said Newcastle Knights Operations manager, Stephen Crowe.

“He’s had his ups and downs throughout his career, but no-one can deny his ability to have a huge impact on a Rugby League game.”

The former Kangaroo tourist boasts a representative career of 11 State of Origin’s for New South Wales and 5 Tests, including the 2000 World Cup. The 32-year-old also shares the Knights record for the most tries in a match. (4 tries).

“As a two-time premiership winner with the club, Adam’s place in our history is assured. Hopefully he can create some more highlights during the next season or two,” Crowe said.

MacDougall’s appointment allows the Newcastle Knights to provide one of its most loyal servants and former Clubman Of The Year with a fitting end to his career.

Matthew Gidley, a 213 game veteran has requested a release to take up a lucrative contract with English Super League Club, St Helens. That permission was officially granted today.

“We felt obligated to repay Matthew for the service he’s given the Knights throughout his long and illustrious career with the club,” said Newcastle Knights CEO, Ken Conway.

“The chance to finish his playing days in England will set him up for life and he deserves that opportunity.”

Meanwhile, injured Knights Premier League hooker, Luke Quigley has secured his future, agreeing to terms for another year.

Quigley, who has played 40 First Grade games for the club, suffered a dislocated elbow against Manly in Round 17 while deputising for Blues Captain, Danny Buderus. He is expected to be back on the paddock in 1-2 weeks.

I'm willing to give him another chance. If he stays injury free he could be a force, because we know he enjoys his footy at Newcastle. Play him at centre if possible.

I still hope we buy another back.

1- Milton Thaiday
2- Adam MacDougall
3- Kurt Gidley
4- Brad Tighe
5- Chris Walker
6- Jarrod Mullen
7- Andrew Johns

What's everyone think? Perhaps shift Mad Dog to the centres and Tighe to the wing.

Doesn't look that bad. I think if we do sign Walker, he could do with an experienced centre next to him, so swap around Tighe and Doogs and, yeah.

Plenty of speed, that's for sure and you'd have two very dangerous centres in Kidley and Mad Dog.

Does that mean we're only paying him for each game he plays?

We need a good backline player or two for next year only - and Doogs on an incentive based contract is a good thing.
I don't think he has ever been on an incentive based contract, so we should get more game time out of him.
The other good thing is that he is a monster in the gym, so having him lift massive weights should spur on the other guys as well during the off season.

Mad Dog certainly isn't a terrible signing, but surely this isn't the 'world class centre' we claimed we'd need to release Matt Gidley? He's not off contract as far as I'm aware, so why not keep him here for the duration of his contract? Adam MacDougall is not an adequate replacement for him.

Yeah, I don't mind the signing, but releasing Gidley for him is a bad deal. Gids has had a great season, adn after thinknig he was past it, I'm going to miss seeing him in the red and blue.

What a dumb signing. Conway must have suffer from acute memory loss. I expect we'll get about 8 games out of him next season. You think about some of the players that were available and we end up with him. I wonder if he's got his old seat in the grandstand back?

Gidley was always going to be released irrespective of getting a replacement or not. Doogs best position is centre IMO, I'm just p!ssed we've signed someone who's never on the field for one reason or another.

Lets hope the incentives go something like this.

1-10 games $ 3 K a game.

11-15 games $ 4k a game.

16-20 games $ 7 k a game

21-26 games $ 10k a game

Not a base figure per game, it should increase the more games he plays.

If he turns up next year keen to play then it will be ok, if he doesn't then it will be a WOFTAM

If he played every game HOW he can play when his not being a goose and giving away penalties or going for too much his easily worth $200k.

Unfortunately he never does that even when he does make it on the field.

He doesn't go missing all that often.

On a side note anyone remember in 03? or 04? a year Joey was out for a big chunk at least, when we were playing Canberra at Bruce and Doogs tackled Schif about 20m out from the Raiders line next thing he's scored off a smooth as silk one on one strip?

Just thought about that, quality Mad Dog.

The best one on one strip from the dog was the one against Wendell way back when, he stripped it on about the 30 and ran 70m for the try.

Gold doogs!

Plus stamping on Tooves head in 97, thats my favourite dog story.
