Originally written by Tears for Fears, this song by Gary Jules, done in a completely different way to the original, is one of my nominations for greatest song lyrics ever. From the Donnie Darko movie ...

Mad World LYRICS

"Mad World"

All around me are familiar faces
Worn out places, worn out faces
Bright and early for their daily races
Going nowhere, going nowhere
Their tears are filling up their glasses
No expression, no expression
Hide my head I want to drown my sorrow
No tomorrow, no tomorrow

And I find it kinda funny
I find it kinda sad
The dreams in which I'm dying
Are the best I've ever had
I find it hard to tell you
I find it hard to take
When people run in circles
It's a very, very mad world mad world

Children waiting for the day they feel good
Happy Birthday, Happy Birthday
Made to feel the way that every child should
Sit and listen, sit and listen
Went to school and I was very nervous
No one knew me, no one knew me
Hello teacher tell me what's my lesson
Look right through me, look right through me

And I find it kinda funny
I find it kinda sad
The dreams in which I'm dying
Are the best I've ever had
I find it hard to tell you
I find it hard to take
When people run in circles
It's a very, very mad world ... mad world
Enlarging your world
Mad world

Actually when looking at better lyrics, one could ONLY possibly turn to Jim Morrison. However, whats YOUR pick for best lyrics ?

I vote Lee Hardings Wasabi.

Wasabi
She's just like wasabi
Looks like a barbie
She's just too hot for me
She's like a tsunami
Can wipe out an army
With a blink of an eye, she can part the red sea
Drives a yellow ferrari
Wears Nike & Amarni
Her jewellery's all Tiffany's
She hangs out with Arni
Sipps champagne in Paris
But all she ever wants, Is to do it with me

Chorus
Wasabi
So damn hot
Yeah my head's gonna blow
Wasabi
She's on eleven
She can go go go

She's organic, Vegan
Eats tofu, no bacon
Every creature's so cute u c
Won't tolerate hate &
No furs & no pagans
Quotes every God, every guru schwarmi
She's wise as Kenobi
Listens to Moby
Every day on her plasma TV
Speaks french and malaysian
Scores 100's and a's 'n
All she ever wants Is to do it with me

Chorus x2

She's just like wasabi
Looks like a barbie
She's just too hot for me
She's like a tsunami
Can wipe out an army
With a blink of an eye, she can part the red sea
Flys jets cross the canyon
Sky dives with the band ain't
your average adrenaline freak
Tightropes niagra
Don't need no viagra
Cause all she really wants is to do it with me

Chorus x2

Seriously though I'm a big fan of Darren Hanlons songwriting. Also The Pixies, you can just attach so many meanings to their esoteric ramblings, noone but Frank Black really knows what they mean.

Donny Darko version is great

these are good
pink floyd;

"One Of My Turns"

Day after day, love turns grey
Like the skin of a dying man
Night after night, we pretend it's all right
But I have grown older and
You have grown colder and
Nothing is very much fun any more.

And I can feel one of my turns coming on.
I feel cold as razor blade
Tight as a tourniquet
Dry as a funeral drum,
Run to the bedroom, in the suitcase on the left
You'll find my favourite axe
Don't look so frightened
This is just a passing phase
Just one of my bad days
Would you like to watch T. V.?
Or get between the sheets?
Or contemplate the silent freeway?
Would you like something to eat?
Would you like to learn to fly?
Would you like to see me try?
Would you like call the cops?
Do you think it's time I stopped?
Why are you running away?

The creepy part is I've seen a few school kids choirs singing Mad World on the tele. Is it really an appropriate song for 8 year olds to be singing?

As I say in every lyrics thread, Iron and Wine aka Sam Beam is by far my favourite lyricist. He's just incredible.

I've always liked these lyrics, but didn't know until much later that Peter Gabriel was writing about when he quit Genesis, which makes them even better.

Climbing up on Solsbury Hill
I could see the city light
Wind was blowing, time stood still
Eagle flew out of the night
He was something to observe
Came in close, I heard a voice
Standing stretching every nerve
Had to listen had no choice
I did not believe the information
just had to trust imagination
My heart going boom boom boom
"Son," he said "Grab your things,
I've come to take you home."

To keepin' silence I resigned
My friends would think I was a nut
Turning water into wine
Open doors would soon be shut
So I went from day to day
Tho' my life was in a rut
"Till I thought of what I'd say
Which connection I should cut
I was feeling part of the scenery
I walked right out of the machinery
My heart going boom boom boom
"Hey" he said "Grab your things
I've come to take you home."
<Back home.>

When illusion spin her net
I'm never where I want to be
And liberty she pirouette
When I think that I am free
Watched by empty silhouettes
Who close their eyes but still can see
No on taught them etiquette
I will show another me
Today I don't need a replacement
I'll tell them what the smile on my face meant
My heart going boom boom boom
"Hey" I said "You can keep my things,
they've come to take me home."

"I'm never where I want to be....."

Great song.

I couldn't pick a best, but my personal favourite would be...

Buddha for Mary-30 Seconds to Mars

A simple fear to wash you away
An open mind canceled it today
A silent song that's in your words
A different taste that's in your mind

This is the life on mars

Mary was a different girl
Had a thing for astronauts
Mary was the type of girl
She always liked to fall apart
Mary was a holy girl
Father whet her appetite
Mary was the type of girl
She always liked to f**k about

Tell me did you see her face
Tell me did you smell her taste
Tell me what’s the difference
Don’t they all just look the same inside?
Buddha for Mary, Here it comes

Mary was an acrobat
But still she couldn’t seem to breathe
Mary was becoming everything she didn’t want to be
Mary would hallucinate
And see the sky upon the wall
Mary was the type of girl
She always liked to fly

Tell me did you see her face
Tell me did you smell her taste
Tell me what’s the difference
Don’t they all just look the same inside?
Buddha for Mary, Here it comes
Buddha for Mary, Here it comes

This is the life on mars

He said, "Can you here me, are you sleeping"
She said, "Will you rape me now?"
He said, "Leave the politics to mad men"
She said, "I believe your lies"
He said, "There’s a paradise beneath me"
She said, "Am I supposed to bleed?"
He said, "You better pray to Jesus"
She said, "I don’t believe in god"

Mary was a different girl
Had a thing for astronauts
Mary was the type of girl
She always liked to play a lot
Mary was a holy girl
Father wet her appetite
Mary was the type of girl
She always liked to fall apart

Tell me did you see her face
Tell me did you smell her taste
Tell me what’s the difference
Don’t they all just look the same inside?
See her face, smell her taste
What’s the difference?
Don’t they all just look the same inside?

A simple fear to wash you away
An open mind cancelled it today

um heres the lyrics for lifehouse everything

Find Me Here
Speak To Me
I want to feel you
I need to hear you
You are the light
That's leading me
To the place where I find peace again.

You are the strength, that keeps me walking.
You are the hope, that keeps me trusting.
You are the light to my soul.
You are my purpose...you're everything.

How can I stand here with you and not be moved by you?
Would you tell me how could it be any better than this?

You calm the storms, and you give me rest.
You hold me in your hands, you won't let me fall.
You steal my heart, and you take my breath away.
Would you take me in? Take me deeper now?

How can I stand here with you and not be moved by you?
Would you tell me how could it be any better than this?
And how can I stand here with you and not be moved by you?
Would you tell me how could it be any better than this?

Cause you're all I want, You're all I need
You're everything,everything
You're all I want your all I need
You're everything, everything.
You're all I want you're all I need.
You're everything, everything
You're all I want you're all I need, you're everything, everything.

And How can I stand here with you and not be moved by you?
Would you tell me how could it be any better than this?
How can I stand here with you and not be moved by you?
Would you tell me how could it be any better than this?

<background>How can I stand here with you and not be moved by you?
Would you tell me how could it be any better than this?

Would you tell me how could it be any better than this?

I've often thought that Paul Kelly is the songwriting equivalent of Tim Winton. I reckon this is a great song about doing it:

I had the moon in my bed
Every night, down she falls
And I had the sun in my heart
I had nothing, now I have it all

And I had the sun in my heart
Where I lie, by her side

She can take me
Somewhere else
And make me feel like
Someone else

And I had the moon in my bed
And I had the stars at my feet

Also, I thought Crowded House did a great job with 'Fall at your feet'. I listened to this song for years but didn't get what it's really about until I was a teenager:

I'm really close tonight
And I feel like I'm moving inside her
Lying in the dark
And I think that I'm beginning to know her
Let it go

I'll be there when you call
And whenever I fall at your feet
You let your tears rain down on me
Whenever I touch your slow turning pain

You're hiding from me now
There's something in the way that you're talking
Words don't sound right
But I hear them all moving inside you, go

I'll be waiting when you call
Hey and whenever I fall at your feet
Won't you let your tears rain down on me
Whenever I touch your slow turning pain

The finger of blame has turned upon itself
And I'm more than willing to offer myself
Do you want my presence or need my help?
Who kows where that might lead

I fall
Whenever I fall at your feet
Would you let your tears rain down on me
Whenever I fall, ever I fall.

Mad World by Gary Jules is so beautifully sad.
I also think Bernard Fannings song Shelter For my Soul is really sad and beautiful at the same time as well.

At the end of my days when I’m called to go,
Into the open arms of the Holy Ghost,
To have lived such a life as I have known,
Fortune follows me, but I’m brave no more.

For my great mistakes I will surely pay,
I’m running low and the devil is on my trail,
When fate delivers me all I’ll ask it for,
Is a place to rest and shelter for my soul.

Oh if I could spend my days,
Free from the prison of your gates,
Then I could die a happy man.

Oh if I could spend my days,
Free from the shadow of my name,
Then I could die happy man.

When I am released from this mortal load,
I’ll take my leave but I don’t wanna go.

When fate delivers me all I’ll ask it for,
A place to rest and shelter for my soul.

----

Someone told me it was in the Ned Kelly movie, but I can't remember.

Jim Morrison...?

Maybe try and research the lyrics to the Celebration of The Lizard (it WONT be that easy btw), and perhaps you might understand why i revere him so much.

Here's a tiny bit of a clue ...
----------------
From Wikipedia ...
Celebration of the Lizard" is an epic performance piece written by Jim Morrison, the late frontman of the rock & roll group The Doors. Composed as a poem, the piece includes musical sections and passages of allegorical storytelling. The poem was supposed to be a full side of a vinyl record or album, but the other members of the band thought that the extended poetic sections and overall length of the piece made a complete recording impossible. The band did attempt to record the full piece several times, but abandoned the idea when they were dissatisfied with the results. One musical passage from "The Celebration", Not to Touch the Earth, was put onto their third studio album Waiting for the Sun.

"Celebration" was performed in its entirety at a handful of Doors shows, and was a staple of the Doors' concerts. A performance of "Celebration" can be heard on the band's 1970 live album Absolutely Live.

The Doors show at the Felt Forum in New York City, January 1970, captures Morrison making history on stage and on tape for eternity. Before reading Celebration Of The Lizard, he encourages the audience to use uncouth language loudly and clearly so that it will be recorded along with the performance.

"Now listen, listen, I want to remind you of something very important. I don’t know if you are aware of it, but this whole evening is being taped for eternity and beyond that too... and so listen man, if you want to be represented in eternity, with some uncouth language..then I hope you’ll stand up on the top of your seat and shout it out very clearly or we’re not gonna get it on tape, right ? Don’t worry, the operation won’t take long and you’ll be much better in the morning." - Jim Morrison

OH and btw ...

Once i had
A little game
I like to crawl back in my brain
I think you know
The game i mean
I mean the game called
Go Insane

Now you should try
this little game
Just close your eyes
Forget your name
Forget the world
Forget the people
And we'll erect
A different steeple

This little game is fun to do
Just close your eyes, no way to lose
And im Not here ... im going to
release control ... we're breaking through !!

haha very true. Channel 9 used to use it as their News song just as recently as a few months ago ... just before Kerry Packer died.

Now its nowhere to be seen ... well spotted :)
