I reckon it would be sick if it was based around time periods, like Empire Earth or Civ. Like the first day is 3000bc, second is 1000bc, third is jesus years, and so on. Different powers per epoch. Would be a pain to work out though.

If you guys go a different route i may take a spin doing the history angle.

So some roles would start weak and get strong, and some would go the other way?

Or a myths & legends mafia, so bigfoot, lochness monster, vampires, etc.

Mytical creautres mafia could work too.

Yeah. Like Mongolia would start average, then get extremely powerful around the mid game, then eventually peter out toward the late game. Or America starts off weak, then they get stronger toward the end game, or if Spain or England attack them or something. Many many variables, but i like trying the non traditional games.

I would have to read up on my history, because i'm not that flash with the thirty or so civs that i'd need to work powers out for in the game. Only one or two, and that's spotty at best. but i love researching history, so it wouldn't be a big deal.

That sounds pretty interesting. To give it some ebb and flow maybe it could even be a 'role' so to speak within the society, rather than being given a society. An artist might not hold much value early-on, peak during the Renaissance before going down and having another rise towards the modern era. A priest would start off very strong post-Jesus era before having a fairly sharp drop toward the endgame.

Just one of the variables you could play with if you need some ideas. But I think the idea of a kind of evolving history Mafia is very very cool.

That's it, i'm keen as on this idea now. Mark me down for Civilization mafia Mis.

Probably ready to run in September. Not running any before then.

RHCP, that is also a really good idea. Thirty roles that represent society as a whole. That is massive. Sounds like fun to plan. I may tackle that after i get through this one.

The historical angle would be brilliant & was not something I had thought of. I was more thinking 20th century or post WWII. Life of Brian suffered due the majority not being familiar with the theme, keeping it modern everyone should know what's going on (except maybe BM) I do have something in mind for the game mechanics that would be different though. I am still trying to think of how to make it work properly though. It could be very cool if I come up with a solution.

I really like some of the ideas on powers that rise & fall in an historical based game. The only pain in the arse would be if you lost some potentially good countries before they hit their powers. Same with any game though I suppose, it would just be more obvious in a game like this.

It's a funny theme with themes. Common knowledge is fine and weird is fine (like Random Mafia) - but too specific and people get confused.

Unless the rise and fall of countries was fluid. For example if a country that would've held down another dies early then there's no longer anything holding that first country down.

This might be one where a power activation/evolution might work very well.

Had the idea of running a "thieves and assassins mafia" where there were no typical role powers, but instead have transferable items.

A similar scheme could work here with espionage/technology theft granting powers and giving players the opportunity to evolve their country into a power.

Another idea could be to have no initial mafias, but through diplomacy/countries aligning mafias could be formed.

I quite like mafias where I know very little as it gives me a change to really figure things out instead of making assumptions. Having said that, it's a lot more thinking/effort and some people don't have the time for it.

The latter is something I'm going to use in Miser's Falls Mafia. The former will be a feature in Dungeons & Dragons Mafia.
