Making a leg tackle dominant?

With the rule change we are talking about, the attacker would be penalised if they kicked out before the ref called "release".

That's not fair. A tackled player has every right to try to regain his feet as quickly as possible. Calling it a dominant tackle will give the defender more chance to get to marker, but you can't ask the attacker to go all starfish until they are ready.

I'm all for slowing down leg tackles if it's balanced with wrestle tackles being quickened up. Reward the more aesthetically pleasing tackling and punish the ugly wrestling.

If you need 3 or 4 players to stop a bloke then make them get up quicker. If you stop a bloke around the legs 1 on 1 reward the defender.

We need to be rewarding the right kind of play and punishing the wrong kind. And at the moment when it comes to tackling we've got it the wrong way around.

I've thought about this for a while........and I reckon this could be the answer to all the lifting and niggling in all the tackles.

Make one on one tackles around the legs dominant.Give the tackler time to lie on the player and get up and his players onside.

At the moment it is actually bad to do a legs tackle...the player is taken out of the defensive line and the bloke gets up and plays the ball very quickly.

So obvious players are discouraged from doing this and now we see the bi products,lifting,twisting,wrestling.....and we miss the art of the one on one......i used to love blokes like Wayne Pearce,Dave Gillespie and even Luke Lewis chopping someone down with a beautifully timed tackle.....and u can hurt peeps too.

I would love to see this implemented and fast.

Thoughts?
I could not possibly agree more.

It's almost as if I wrote these words myself.

Simon Says has got dis.

Nice post OP, you're spot on something needs to be done. By banning the third man in leg tackle, all they've done is encourage one of the tacklers to lift the leg to try to get the player to the ground. When you already have two up top wrestling, a player can easily get tipped on to his head accidentally

Not just a legs tackle, any one on one tackle below the ball. The attacker has not been denied the chance to pass. A tackler in this instance should not be denied the chance to take part in the next play just because he made a great individual tackle. He should be allowed to climb over the tackled player and get to marker.

Agree with the OP that the one on one legs tackle needs to be rewarded/encouraged, but not convinced about the crawling over to get to marker proposal.
Alternative - one on one tackles rewarded by defense only having to retreat 5m instead of 10.
Requires refs to be somewhat discretionary, and certainly more aware. So fraught with danger.

Critiques?

Ive thought about this the last 2 or 3 years…hate seeing a player cut down in a good around the legs tackle only for him to get up and play the ball as if it was touch footy…should be able to hold on longer…or be able to move up the body to marker as suggested.

Agree 100%.

I hate the moments where as soon as the defender lets go of the legs, the attacker will instantly get up and play the ball, giving the dummy half an easy run.

Only problem is where do you draw the line... If a player makes a half break or is tackled in the last line by the fullback, then should a desperation legs tackle be considered dominant?

IMO it shouldnt, the attacking team needs to be rewarded for their good play and getting 1-on-1 matchups. Best way of rewarding the team is a quick play the ball, and a back pedalling defence.

The only way it should be applied is if a defender makes a legs tackle in the front line, and chops the ball carrier down with a text book tackle. They are getting punished here because their tackle is so effective it doesn't give time for a 2nd or 3rd player to get in an slow the play-the-ball down (would be penalised for a flop), hence the ball carrier gets a fast play the ball despite an ineffective run.

In saying this though, it would create more grey areas in the game. Should just stick with how it is, and try and eliminate wrestling and gang tackling. Speeding up the game is what needs to be done, not slowing down the fast, exciting aspects and hoping this will solve the slow wresting parts.

Greyer than three blokes in a tackle..hands on the ball, lifting twisting, the list goes on.

I miss a beautiful grasscutting tackle, its at the core of what rugby league is about and we should be doing everything we can to promote its use......we are doing the exact opposite atm.

Seems like we nearly all agree on this....
Yep. I like this idea too
Its been put forth for several years now.
Dunno why the NRL are against it...but they obviously are

Just saw jonno knights post...good points against I guess
Nothings ever as clear cut as it seems at first
