Manly football club members will vote on a new privatisation deal that gives major sponsor Max Delmege a controlling stake in the Sea Eagles.

Under the proposal, which has been approved by the Manly board, Delmege will purchase 62.5 per cent of the club for $3.5 million.

In return, he will receive 3.5 million shares in a new company called Manly Warringah Sea Eagles Limited, with the existing football club taking another two million shares and Penn Sports buying 100,000 shares at $1 each.

Included in the agreement, which will be put to members at an extraordinary general meeting on June 3, is that:

 the club remains known as Manly Warringah Sea Eagles;

the colours be maroon and white; and

all home games be played at Brookvale Oval.

Members were told in an information package mailed out this week that it was envisaged that majority control would eventually return to the football club through the issue of preference shares.

During time, Delmege intends to sell down his shareholding to 15 per cent, with the football club aiming to raise $1 million per year through membership.

The Sea Eagles hope to increase the number of football club members from about 500 to more than 5000 during the next five years.

Manly Leagues Club will continue to provide an annual funding grant of $1 million.

Awesome how they are going to actually sell football club membership! Something EVERY rugby league team should be looking into. It's amazing to realise that Manly only have 500 members!

It's time that the fans help sponsor the clubs they love! :D

Yea rugby league doesn't push football club membership. In AFL its a fundemental pillar of their game, and so it should be in ours. Fans should be able to support and be a part of the club. Not just "costumers".

Souths have the most football club members in the NRL. I'm one of them. ;-)

I know St George-Illawarra have their Red V program, a step in the right direction as well.

So the value of the Eagles as a going concern is only $5.38 million?

 I'm pretty sure even Balmain have more than that! (and our membership is pretty disgraceful)

People often think that Leagues Club & Football Club membership are the same thing. They're not - they're two seperate entities.

I'm a St George Football Club member as well as the Leagues Club.

The Red V membership program is a sham. I am a member as a result of being a season ticket-holder. There are no voting rights with being a "member" of the St George Illawarra Dragons, you get a few stickers & a keyring. There's no accountability, which is a key reason a lot of people become members.

Ben S.

God that is a disgrace, I thought the Red V programme was legit.

It's true as well, most fans think Leagues and Football club memberships are the same. Rugby League needs to create a football club membership tradition, like the AFL. It will bring the fans closer to the club and give clubs more stability.

Who better to sponsor a club than the fans?

Just to add the Broncos were the first privately owned club as stated and they were recently valued at just over $12,000,000.

I've so sick of club's pushing season tickets as the premier way to support a club! I love rugby league but yet I'm not a season ticket holder, because I always go with varying groups of friends. I still want to officially support my club though, even though I still attend every rl game possible in my region.

Also many many fans of clubs don't live near the club's homebase and so can't attend matches.

The Broncos have 98,040,631 shares and the last traded price on the Australian Stock Exchange was 10 cents giving a Market Valuation for the Broncos of $9.8million not $12million.

Not long ago, Broncos shares were trading at 8.5cents.

That is quite a bit smaller than the least valued AFL club, the Bulldogs, at 14.5mill.

The Roosters since 2000 have had 3 different types of membership one can buy. One for Sydney based fans and one for country based fans and then the junior one. These memberships are pretty good value and a great way of financially supporting your team and being a part of it even if you live in the country or your life schedule means you can't attend games.

Yea but are they actually membership to the football club, or just supporter clubs disguised as it?

thats the same as the wests tigers 'membership'

you get a few trinkets and a newsletter and the club loves to promote it

but of course it isn't a true membership - the only way fans can get a say in the running of the wests tigers is to become members of either Balmain Tigers or Western Suburbs Magpies. This makes the fact that membership numbers for both clubs are so small absolutely disgraceful (especially given the fact that Balmain at least is a mere $11 a year - dunno about wests)

$11?? You'll get that back in the form of free grog & pies at the AGM!!

Football Club memberships are the best-kept secret in Rugby League. They're not promoted at all because the clowns that run these clubs want to keep their own little fifedoms...

Cheers,
Ben S.
