Ox anoints halves

http://manly-daily.whereilive.com.au/sport/story/ox-anoints-halves/

MANLY skipper Matt Orford has backed the selection of rookie halves Kieran Foran and Trent Hodkinson for the club’s trip to England, declaring the pair the future of the Sea Eagles.

The two young playmakers were on Friday surprise inclusions in Manly’s 23-man touring squad for the World Club Challenge match against Leeds on March 2 (AEDST).

Test prop Brent Kite (compassionate grounds) and new signing Tony Williams (hamstring injury) are the only two high-profile players that will miss the trip.

There was a couple of other surprises with uncapped Andrew Suniula and Jared Waerea-Hargreaves both earning a spot on the plane on Sunday night.

Forgotten prop George Rose also makes a return to the top squad for the first time since an horrific leg injury almost two years ago.

But it’s the selection of rookies Foran and Hodkinson that is the most significant and one that excites Manly’s premiership-winning half.

“The club’s in a great position in that they’ve got two quality guys coming through,” Orford told The Manly Daily on Friday.

“I’ve been really impressed with both of them.

“They’re both real competitive, they’re both cheeky as halves which you need to be and they’ve both got great speed.

“They’re strong halves, they’ve got a kicking game, a running game and the passing game they’ve been working really hard on.

“Even though they are still young and still need to learn, I think no doubt they’re the future of the club and they’re only going to get better and better.”

Manly coach Des Hasler said the rookies deserved their chance and suggested one or two could play some NRL football this year.

“They have all trained pretty hard during the off season and the trip away will be a good experience for them,” Hasler said.

“I think there are some there who could be ready to be called upon if we have injuries, and hopefully during the rep season.”

The Sea Eagles play the Harlequins on February 23 before aiming to become the first Australian side in six years to win the WCC.

“It will be a real contest for us and we’re treating it very seriously,” Hasler said.

Test prop Brent Kite to miss Manly's World Club Challenge match

February 13, 2009http://www.foxsports.com.au/story/0,8659,25049030-23210,00.html

MANLY will be without Test prop Brent Kite for next month's rugby league World Club Challenge against Super League champions Leeds Rhinos.
Manly club officials said Kite, who played for Australia in last year's World Cup, has been given unspecified compassionate leave and will miss the tour.

Sea Eagles coach Des Hasler on Friday named two new recruits in his 23-man squad to tour Britain for the World Club Challenge.

Newcastle stand-off Chris Bailey and former Penrith utility forward Shane Rodney were called into the Sea Eagles squad that won last year's NRL grand final 40-0 over Melbourne Storm.

Missing from the premiership side are Steve Menzies, Steven Bell and Mark Bryant, who all now play in the Super League.

Apart from Kite, injured duo Michael Bani and star recruit Tony Williams will also miss the trip.

Premiership stars Steve Matai and Brett Stewart were named after off-season shoulder surgery ruled them out of last year's World Cup.

"The players have had a great preparation in the off-season and are really excited about the trip," Hasler said.

"For us we are definitely taking it very seriously.

"It is a big game for us as it is also the NRL side's final trial match before the season."

The reigning NRL premiers depart on Sunday for the WCC clash against Super League champions Leeds at Elland Road on March 1.

Manly will also play a warm up clash against the Harlequins in London on February 22.

The Sea Eagles will be bidding to become the first Australian NRL champions to win the WCC since Sydney Roosters beat St Helens in Bolton in 2003.

Leeds beat Melbourne 11-4 in last year's match at Elland Road.

Williamson's inside mail on Sea Eagles left unopened

February 14, 2009
http://www.leaguehq.com.au/news/new...s-left-unopened/2009/02/13/1234028290294.html

LONDON: London rugby league club Harlequins will not be relying on any inside information from former Manly lock Luke Williamson when the teams meet next week.
The Super League side takes on the NRL premiers on February 22 at Twickenham Stoop in a warm-up for the Sea Eagles' clash with Leeds in the World Club Challenge at Elland Road a week later.
Harlequins head coach Brian McDermott said his squad was focused on their own game rather than on any Williamson analysis of their Australian opponents.
"Rugby league games are not won by one player, and I think his tip is for us to score more tries than them," McDermott told the Harlequins website. "Luke is really looking forward to this fixture though. He's in Harlequins … colours now and he's pretty full-on about the game."
The Sea Eagles arrive in London on Monday, and McDermott was keen to "soften them up a bit" for Super League champions Leeds.
"You rarely get the chance to pit yourself against the best, and whilst we hope that Leeds can do the job and come out as world club champions the week after, this is a chance for us to have a crack at the Aussies first," he said.
"We are getting the chance to have a crack at the best and whatever the sport and whatever walk of life you are in, that's something you want to do."
Meanwhile, another former Manly player, Luke Dorn, will start his second spell with Harlequins this weekend. The five-eighth spent two seasons with the club, scoring 36 tries in 52 games, before heading to Salford in 2007.
He was impressive for Castleford last season and will return for Harlequins' season opener on Sunday after last week's Super League game against Bradford was postponed because of a frozen Stoop pitch.
Despite being a hit at Castleford during his time there, Dorn was bracing for a backlash should he score for 'Quins. He admitted he jumped at the chance to return to London. "I probably played my best footy when I was down here in London, and I had to take the opportunity to come back," Dorn told The Evening Standard.
"I've been in the UK for four years and I probably missed London more than Australia."

Digging in for the fight

Manly have no qualms about getting down and dirty to try to end Australian teams' dismal run in the World Club Challenge, writes Greg Prichard.
Manly flew out of Sydney yesterday with a plan to play as ugly as it takes to beat English club Leeds in the World Club Challenge.
Preparing for the likelihood of bitterly cold and wet conditions at the Elland Road ground in Leeds on March 1, the Sea Eagles have discussed the need for patience above all else as they try to become the first Australian team since the Sydney Roosters, in 2003, to win the event.
Since the WCC, which was played irregularly and in both hemispheres from 1976 to 1997, became an annual event staged in England from 2000, Australian teams have won only two of the nine games. Some of those losing sides have made the mistake of taking too many risks in difficult conditions against English sides more prepared to wait for opposition mistakes.
Manly are determined not to fall into that category and - amid a backdrop of political in-fighting at the club which has seen chairman and co-owner Scott Penn accused co-owner Max Delmege of failing to meet ongoing financial commitments to the operation of the club - have formulated a plan designed to have them out-stay the opposition.
The plus for the Sea Eagles is that, while they had the best attacking record in the NRL last season, they were a great defensive team as well, with only Melbourne, conceding fewer points than them in the regular season.
Manly star Jamie Lyon, who played two seasons with English club St Helens in 2006 and 2007, believes if the Sea Eagles want to win, their approach has to be dictated by conditions. "Australian teams have struggled over there, and the conditions come into it a lot," Lyon said before leaving. "We've been trying to adapt to the conditions, and we'll train a lot in the conditions over there. Playing a warm-up game against another Super League team [Harlequins] will be a big help. It will provide a taste of the conditions for the guys who are wondering what it's like to play over there.
"We have to be prepared to get into an arm-wrestle, shorten our passes up and limit our mistakes. You can't go out and try to throw long balls all day and play an expansive game. It'll probably be zero degrees and water everywhere, and you've got to adapt to that. Our defence has been up with the best in the competition here. We've been able to withstand constant pressure, so we should back ourselves.

"We have to be prepared to win ugly. If it has to be about nitty-gritty, and not being pretty, then that's how we'll be. The thought of wanting to play attacking footy is always in the back of your mind, but sometimes you just can't play it that way. The decisions we make on the field are going to be critical. If the conditions happened to be good, we would play differently, but sometimes you've just got to tuck the ball under your arm and run straight."
Even when his team won games easily last season, Sea Eagles coach Des Hasler highlighted when they had not secured the ball and established field position as well as he would have liked. He will push those points going into Sunday's game against Harlequins and against the Rhinos. "The result will mostly come down to the conditions and how you handle them," Hasler said.
During a media conference on Friday that had been scheduled for weeks to announce the selection of Manly's squad for the trip to England, the players stood in the background for the most part as Penn, chief executive Grant Mayer and David Kenney, a director representing the club's new major sponsor, Quantum Eco Hot Water, took questions related to the off-field drama.
Hasler said he didn't believe the boardroom bust-up had been a distraction to players, adding: "We're concentrating on the game. From the English perspective, it's a massive game, but we're taking it very seriously as well, because it's a big part of our preparation [for the NRL season]. We play both of our trial games over there, so that's where we've got to get ourselves ready for the start of the season."

Manly Tour Info update

What else are you doing?
We also give them details on when they should be sleeping – that they should stay awake for the first 5 hours – try to get their body clock in sync with the UK pretty quickly. They should sleep at this certain time, what they should be eating. We’ve actually requested certain meals on the plane. They are flying Business Class which is another thing we’ve done. Which sounds very extravagant but it’s a long flight. We discussed this yesterday with the players and said that it wasn’t an end of season trip, that it’s a business trip. They are all taking it very seriously.

Basically we’ve tried to mirror what we do here over there. Which is a nightmare because of the time difference and trying to organise training venues and high performance units like we have here. Finding suitable training venues in London has been really hard. Leeds is easy because they are used to footballers. Steve Giggs (Football Manager) has spent many hours late at night on the phone to people over there trying to organise things but hopefully pretty much what we do here, we will be doing over there. There won’t be much difference from a training point of view.

It’s just like a normal away game for us in the sense that apart from water requirements and jet lag and food we are keeping our usual routine.

Harlequins RL are honing their preparations to face the Manly Sea Eagles in the forthcoming London Rugby League Challenge (Sun 22nd Feb) and say they can't wait to pit their wits against the Australian NRL champions.
The Quins play the Sea Eagles on Sunday week in an attractive looking fixture at the Twickenham Stoop that whets the appetite perfectly for the Carnegie World Club Challenge a week later.
It’s a match that offers the engage Super League team a great opportunity to show to the Rugby League world that they are a top quality outfit.
And the exciting nature of that opportunity is not lost on Head Coach Brian McDermott who is relishing the clash.
You rarely get the chance to pit yourself against the best and whilst we hope that Leeds can do the job and come out as World Club Champions the week after, this is a chance for us to have a crack at the Aussies first and maybe soften them up a bit for the Leeds boys”, he said.
“If we do a good job against Manly, then you could read many things into it. People will say that there’s a team that didn’t finish in the [Super League] play-offs last year and they’ve beaten or performed really well against the NRL champions! We are getting the chance to have a crack at the best and whatever the sport and whatever walk of life you are in, that’s something you want to do”.
And McDermott has also revealed that his squad have been focussing on their own play rather than using Quins’ former Manly player Luke Williamson to analyse their Aussie opponents.
“Rugby League games are not won by one player and I think his tip is for us to score more tries than them!!”, joked McDermott.
“Luke himself is really looking forward to this fixture though. He’s in Harlequins Rugby League colours now and he‘s pretty full on about the game. He certainly wants us to do as well as he can”.
Meanwhile, Quins’ England forward Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook has revealed he is also straining at the leash to face the Aussie team and prove his worth against antipodean opponents.
“I really can’t wait to play against Manly Sea Eagles”, he enthused. “It’s something new for me. I’ve played against Australian teams on an amateur tour but this is certainly something to look forward to. Hopefully we’ll give them and great game”.
Tickets for the Carnegie World Club Challenge between Leeds Rhinos and Manly Sea Eagles are also selling fast but are still available.
The match takes place at Elland Road Stadium, Leeds on Sunday March 1st (ko 6pm)
Prices start at just £20 (with £10 for concessions).
They can be purchased from the RFL Ticket Office on 0871 226 13 13 or click

Sea Eagles prop George Rose misses training due to illness

February 18, 2009http://www.foxsports.com.au/story/0,8659,25071851-23214,00.html

ILLNESS has forced Manly prop George Rose out of the Sea Eagles' first UK training session ahead of Sunday's World Club Challenge (WCC) warm-up match against Harlequins.
Coach Des Hasler said Rose was expected to recover in time for the match against the London-based side ahead of the WCC clash with Super League champions Leeds Rhinos on March 1.

“He's just got a little bit of a virus so he'll be OK Sunday,” Hasler told AAP.

Rose is continuing his comeback to the top flight after breaking his leg in a sickening injury suffered in a tackle during round 11 of the 2007 NRL season against Melbourne.

Hasler presided over a lively training session in west London just over 24 hours after the NRL premiers arrived in the UK.

“It's just a chance to loosen up and get their limbs moving,” he said.

Hasler will use the match against `Quins to trial two sides from his 23-man squad, one in each half, before they travel north to Leeds to face the defending WCC champions at Elland Road.

Manly ready to buck the trend

http://rugbyleaguelive.com/Articles/4015/2009/02/18/Manly_ready_to_buck_the_trend.aspx

7630_NRLMANLYWARRIORSNRL614.jpg

Jamie Lyon believes many Manly players are in the shape of their lives as they prepare to take on Leeds Rhinos in the World Club Challenge (WCC).

Excuses were in short supply and motivation abounded on Tuesday as the Sea Eagles embarked on the crucial phase of their lead-up to the clash between the NRL premiers and the Super League champions at Elland Road on March 1.

"We've had a good off-season and a lot of the boys are in the best condition that they've ever been," said Lyon, who spent two seasons with Super League club St Helens in 2005-06.

"Things are shaping up pretty well."

Just a day after arriving in London, the Sea Eagles had a lively hit-out in positively balmy conditions compared to the freezing temperatures that led to heavy snowfalls in the capital earlier this month.

So the bitter weather conditions often blamed for Australian sides managing to win the WCC just twice since 2000 could turn out not to be a factor.

A strong pre-season and two weeks' preparation in the UK, including a trial against London Super League club Harleqins on Sunday, should stand the Sea Eagles in good stead against defending WCC champions Leeds.

And the chance to become the first NRL team to win the trophy since the Sydney Roosters six years ago is enticing to coach Des Hasler.

"We're taking it very seriously," Hasler said.

"We've had a really good off-season back home, we've trained really, really hard.

"Coming over here allows us to freshen up a little bit, a bit of mental stimulation, a change of environment and apart from all that it's just a wonderful life experience.

"For some of these players it's their first time to the Old Dart, so it's great."

The Sea Eagles' 23-man squad were set to enjoy a day off sightseeing on Wednesday before two more training sessions ahead of Sunday's match, where Hasler will trial two sides, one in each half.

Prop George Rose missed Tuesday's training session with a virus, but was expected to recover in time for the Quins game.

Meanwhile, Hasler said the bitter backroom stoush that has engulfed the club in Australia had not been a distraction for his players.

"It's probably good being away, but at the end of the day, it's just boards being boards, it's got nothing to do with us," he said.

"The players are too professional to let it distract them."

Captain Matt Orford agreed: "Our job is to play footy ... we can focus on the games ahead and enjoy ourselves a little bit."

"All the boys are very motivated and we want to get off to a great start this year and put ourselves in the best position to bring this trophy home," he added.

And if Britain's famously changeable weather does turn cold again when the squad heads north?

"We can't do too much about it, if it is cold, well we'll adapt the best we can," Orford said.

Rookie ready to earn spurs

19 Feb 09 @ 05:09pm by JASON AVEDISSIAN

http://manly-daily.whereilive.com.au/sport/story/rookie-ready-to-earn-spurs/

A KID once considered the future of Australian rugby will be let loose in London this weekend with nothing but impressing Manly coach Des Hasler on his agenda.
Rookie Sea Eagles forward Jared Waerea-Hargreaves will make his senior debut for Manly in this weekend’s trial match with the Harlequins in London.
Hasler will use all 23 members of his touring party as he searches for his top 17 ahead of next week’s World Club Challenge with Leeds.
Waerea-Hargreaves, who joined Manly last year from the Waratahs, is among the youngsters desperate to show Hasler he has what it takes to play in this year’s premiership defence.
“Hopefully I can prove to Des that I can stick it to them,” the 112kg youngster told The Manly Daily on the eve of the Sea Eagles’ season opener.
“I have been training hard and it’s paid off with a spot on this tour.
“I definitely want to fulfil the expectations on me and hopefully I can show I can play and cement my spot.
“Last year I developed as a player (in the Toyota Cup), now I hope I can play NRL.”
And one of the most important figures within the NRL champions is backing the former Australian rugby under-19s representative to pull through for Manly in 2009.
“He’s definitely going to push for a bench spot this year,” Sea Eagles half and captain Matt Orford said.
“He’s got the size, he’s so fit and he’s still so young. He’s got great ball skills, a good athlete and has that quick off-loading ability.
“The club always finds the guys that have got character and compete for everything.”
And Waerea-Hargreaves, who as a teenager dared a much older first grade club rugby player to run at him, fits that mantle perfectly.
Hasler will give his young guns at least 40 minutes against the Harlequins at The Stoop in London, before the grand final-winning squad takes over.

Manly Sea Eagles captain Matt Orford confident of WCC win over Leeds

By Valkerie Mangnall
February 23, 2009
http://www.foxsports.com.au/story/0,8659,25094788-23210,00.html

Manly captain Matt Orford believes a 34-26 trial victory over Harlequins on Sunday will stand his side in good stead for next weekend's World Club Challenge (WCC) against Leeds.

The Sea Eagles tested an inexperienced side in the first half against Quins at Twickenham's Stoop Stadium before fielding a near full-strength side, which overhauled a 20-0 deficit after the break.

But it was the mechanics of the performance that has the skipper brimming with confidence.

“There was no focus on the scoreboard; it was just about getting our timing,'' Orford said.

“There were guidelines there that we wanted to try and meet to prep ourselves for the Leeds game and I think we went very close to achieving that.

“It's a bonus to win that match but it wasn't a focal point of the game ... we're going to be so much better for that under our belt now against Leeds.''

Despite arriving last Monday to give themselves plenty of time to prepare for their March 1 clash with the defending WCC champions, the Sea Eagles did not enjoy the best lead-up to the Harlequins match.

Watch Manly play Leeds Rhinos in the World Club Challenge EXCLUSIVELY LIVE on Fox Sports 3 from 5am on March 2 (EDT).

A number of players were struck down by a stomach virus during the week, but all recovered in time to take part in the warm-up game.

Kick-off was delayed by about half an hour when a 17-seat mini-bus was sent to take the Sea Eagles 35-man touring party to the ground, prompting a mad dash for taxis to transport the rest of the group.

But despite some loose defence and subdued contact to begin with, the Sea Eagles emerged from the game injury free and Orford was confident his team would be ready to face Leeds.

“We're not just over here to have a run around,'' he said.

“We want to do our best and they (Leeds) pride themselves on this trophy so they're going to be fired up to go back-to-back in this World Club Challenge.

“We've got a few areas we need to work on and they're going to test us in different areas, but the preparation is going good so far and we will test ourselves there.''

Lyon agreed there were still improvements to be made and said there were no big trade secrets he could share from his two seasons at English side St Helens in 2005-06.

“The conditions are a big thing, the ball's not going to be as easy to throw around as it normally is in Australia, so we're just going to have to tighten some passes up and not play as expansive,'' Lyon said.

“We were a bit rusty and even though we scored a few tries; we've still got to get down to the dirty stuff, the tackling and round the ruck and little short passes and that sort of thing.

“We're in good stead at the moment, but we've still got a lot to work on.''

Manly fanatics off to watch Eagles' bid to snare WCC
BY JOEL RITCHIE
25/02/2009

453127.jpg

A 23-hour flight halfway around the world might seem like a long way to go to watch a couple of rugby league games, but that doesn't faze Manly maniacs Barry Stewart, Col Eddy and Phil Allen.

The trio leave for England today to watch their beloved Sea Eagles tackle Leeds in the World Club Challenge at Elland Road on Sunday (Monday morning AEDT).

They will be part of a 20-strong tour group of diehards hoping the boys from Brookvale can become the first NRL side to bring home the symbol of international club supremacy since the Sydney Roosters in 2003.

The match is of special interest to Stewart, whose sons Glenn and Brett will line up for Manly fresh from the 40-0 win over Melbourne in last year's grand final.

When they return from England, Glenn and Brett will become the first brothers to launch an NRL season.

Both Wests Illawarra juniors made the trip after having off-season surgery; Brett on both shoulders and Glenn on his right shoulder.

Glenn, who made his Test debut during the World Cup late last year, is one of four top graders who were laid low by a virus in the lead-up to Manly's 34-26 trial win over Harlequins on Sunday.

Barry Stewart, who will be making his first trip to Europe, said Brett told him about Glenn's illness on Friday.

"Four of them were laid up with a virus and Glenn was one of them," Stewart said.

Despite the prospect of only seeing one of his boys play in the Old Dart, Stewart is excited about watching the Sea Eagles take on their Super League counterparts.

"It's the chance of a lifetime, to see the boys play in another country," he said.

Stewart spent last Tuesday week with his sons before they flew out with the rest of Manly's squad. Watching his sons help their club lift another trophy would cap a magical run, Stewart said.

A bonus of the trip is the chance to see Manly stalwart Steve Menzies play for Super League Bradford team against Huddersfield on Friday.

Stewart said his sons hadn't said much about the recent off-field dramas at Manly including the resignation of CEO Grant Mayer and infighting among owners Scott Penn and Max Delmege.

"The boys have kept very quiet, they wouldnt have a clue what's going on," Stewart said.
