Mann's inside running for Dragons No.1

By MITCH JENNINGS
Feb. 12, 2016, 3:01 p.m.

IT appears the Dragons No.1 jersey is Kurt Mann’s to lose with coach Paul McGregor giving the strongest indication yet that he is prepared to thrust the 22-year-old into custodians role come round one.
Where star fullback Josh Dugan will play in 2016 has dominated preseason discussion around the Dragons with NSW Origin star stating his preference is to make a permanant shift to the centres.

With Dugan rested from Saturday’s Charity Shield clash with South Sydney, Mann will get first crack at the jumper but McGregor said all contenders will need to mount a compelling case for him to shift the incumbent NSW fullback.
‘‘I keep saying it and I’ll say it again, Josh is the current NSW fullback so someone is going to have to play really well in these trials for me to move him because we’ve got some good centres as well,’’ McGregor said.
‘‘It’s a good chance to play the centres in the preferred positions and obviously Kurt at fullback with Josh missing the game.
‘‘With the games going forward and how much football Josh played last year it’s important we rest important guys at different times and we’ve got the opportunity to do that with Josh this weekend.
‘‘It’s a good opportunity for Kurt to play well.
‘‘He’s had a really tough preseason and he’s played most of it at fullback.
‘‘In all our ball work he’s had a hand mostly at fullback so yeah he’s going to get an opportunity this game and next game to prove he’s worthy of playing in that position.’’
Mann played 20 games for the Storm last season in the centres but, having come through the grades primarily as a five-eighth or fullback, McGregor believes he can offer a lot more in key ball-playing positions, likening him to Penrith captain Matt Moylan.

‘‘Because he’s played in the halves for most of his career he’s more of a ball-playing fullback [than Dugan],’’ McGregor said.
‘‘That was a big positive for us when Kurt came on the market not just as a centre because I don’t think that’s his best position.

“I think he played in that position because that’s where Melbourne needed him to play. He shows me a lot more as a 7,6, 1 type of player.
‘‘He’s very quick across the ground and at training he’s getting the defensive reads right. Obviously it’s going to be a step up in a game.
‘‘Josh is a big powerful runner and brings the ball back better than most and he’s got good skill to score but there’s more of an opportunity to play off Kurt out the back off shifts.
‘‘That’s probably where we lacked a little bit of try-scoring last year.
‘‘He’s more of a [Matt] Moylan type of player when you look at it.’’

I guess the question is whether he is strong enough to run the ball back....that was Quinlan's problem he would crab sideways for metres then throw ridiculously long passes to his wingers that got nailed every time....we need someone that can take the kick return upfield and take the pressure off our forwards ....by crabbing sideways it means that our bigger blokes have to travel further and take longer to run on side.
He's no Inglis but that bloke eats big metres up for his pack .....if Mann can travel half as far its a start...

Mann is 90 kg, ten kg heavier than Quinlan and 183 cm, ten cm taller (so his reach is going to be about 14 cm greater) His ability to handle playing centre, you'd think meant that he has sufficient strength to handle fullback role. That said, we'll all breathe a sigh of relief (or not) after his first few games.

Seems similar to the season Kyle Stanley was heavily backed as our new fullback. It's that memory that has me with a let's wait and see attitude. Ultimately the guy is a centre and fullback is quite a lonely place at times.

I think what I'd do is have him earn his place, rather than be gifted first crack. Aitken is hugely promising, especially how he has come back from pre-season faster and bigger. He deserves that centre spot first up.

Personally I'd keep Dugan at FB, he still has heaps of ups in that position even with lack of ball playing. I'd have Aitken partner Lafai in the centres with Mann, Peter M and Milne fighting for a wing spot. I'd be happy with what Mary chooses anyway because it is a real selection headache and I suppose that's good.

The only 2 games Mann has played first grade at fullback was in in rounds 13 and 14 in 2014. In those games he made 100m and 105m along with a line break in each and a try in each game.

That would be my line up as well, but it appears Duges will be at centre, unless Mann doesnt man up.

Actually he is a fullback but was needed to play centre at the Storm.

That isn't anything to scoff at. I am quietly confident he will nail it down. Thanks for the stats

I am very confident he will nail it down. After combing the internet for footage of him playing full back and reviewing what I found I have full faith in him. Bellamy also knows how to pick talent and he poached him from Newcastle to understudy Slater. Gus also had a red hot go at poaching him. We know what the Dugan brings to both fullback and centre and personally, I think he will add more to the team from centre. True strike power and a physical presence.

Good points you raise....I would imagine weight wise hes around Slaters size then...update slater is 88 kg

Totally agree Brissy re Mann at fullback and Dugan at centre . As far as our round one backline that is where they will be . Benji and Widdop in the halves with Nighty on one wing . Aitken and Lafai to fight out left centre . Milne and Mata to fight out the other wing spot

Kurt Mann spent his final few months at the Storm picking the brain of Billy Slater. His arrival at St George Illawarra saw him shadow Josh Dugan. Now the 22-year-old has first crack at the Dragons No.1 spot when he starts at fullback in the annual Charity Shield match against South Sydney on Saturday.
Mann has spent the bulk of the off-season swapping between centre, fullback and five-eighth as uncertainty surrounds the long-term position of Dugan. With Dugan rested from Saturday's game, and eying a permanent switch to the centres, Mann can cast aside any doubts over who will play fullback with a strong performance on Saturday.
"I've been training all over the shop lately," Mann said. "A little bit of centre, fullback, a little bit in the halves. I'm not 100 per cent sure where I'll play.
"Preference would be fullback or five-eighth where I get a little bit more involved.

"There was no position really mentioned [when I signed]. I was open-minded when I signed. I didn't know where I was going to play. It'll all pan out.
"I think I'll end up playing a few different positions [during the trials]. That's what Mary [coach Paul McGregor] has told me he has planned for us. I'll just have to wait and see."
Mann, who has started all but two of his 28 top grade games at centre, worked closely with Slater last season while the Kangaroo representative was sidelined through injury. Slater's Origin counterpart Dugan has helped Mann with his transition from the Storm with the pair rooming during last week's Auckland Nines.
"I learnt a lot off him," Mann said of Slater. "He is really professional player ... he has been a real big help. He grabs the young blokes and really shows them.
"[Dugan] has been a really big help with making the transition with learning the systems."
Mann will share the fullback role with the returning Adam Quinlan on Saturday. McGregor said Mann offers more value at fullback or in the halves than at centre and described him as a Matt Moylan-type of fullback.
"He is very fit," McGregor said. "He is more of ball-playing fullback and that's where we lacked a bit of try scoring last year. He is very quick.
"He has had a tough pre-season and has played most of it at fullback. This game and next game [he has a chance to show] that he is worthy of playing in the position.
"Josh is the current NSW fullback so someone has to play really well in these trials [for him to be moved].
"The biggest attraction [to signing Mann] was his age and he came from a good system. Melbourne needed him to play at centre. He shows me more of a seven, six, one type of player."
The Rabbitohs will unveil new recruits including Michael Oldfield and Damien Cook while Sam Burgess' return has been delayed another week.
