Doing a bit of research of late and found a great little tidbit from the 1999 season. Souths weren't having a bad year and having Mark Carroll in the forwards certainly didn't hurt.
It was in round 12 that "Spud" started to really fire up. At the SFS, Souths hosted a Paul Harragon-less Newcastle Knights and belted them 27 points to 4.
Probably the most notable moment in the match was the opening tackle. Souths kicked off and the ball went to Newcastle's David Lomax to take the first hitup.
BANG!
Lomax was out cold before he hit the ground, as the Sydney Morning Herald described it.
While he was being taken off the field in a medi-cab, his older brother John watched on from up north and vowed to get revenge. You see, Souths were due to play the Cowboys the very next weekend, and Lomax made his intentions clear.
Spud's response was to "bring it on".
Up at Malanda Stadium for round 13, Souths again kicked off to start the match. For the Cowboys, the ball was sent straight to John Lomax to take the first hit up of the match.
Spud was the first to meet him.
BANG!
Lomax was out cold and did not take any further part in the match.
Most of us remember Mark Carroll's titanic clashes with Paul Harragon during that period, but fewer would still be aware of this part of Spud's career that underscored the notion that he was one tough bastard.
