Dragons great Mark Coyne has stood down from the ARL Commission following an incident in Singapore.

According to The Sydney Morning Herald, Coyne had his passport withheld for nearly seven weeks following an incident on June 2 outside the Grand Hyatt hotel when he used “vile and disgusting” language towards public officials.

This incident involving the Queensland champion allegedly happened three days before State of Origin I, with the SMH reporting Coyne was briefly held in a cell overnight and forced to surrender his passport.

It is understood a hotel doorman contacted local authorities and that Coyne’s alleged disrespect towards the police caused him to be detained.

Despite the incident occurring early last month, Coyne only informed the rest of the Commission earlier this week.

The NRL became aware of the situation after law enforcement officers contacted the NRL’s integrity unit.

And according to The Australian’s Brent Read, who was speaking on NRL 360 that is a massive problem for Coyne in terms of being able to continue on in his role.

“Mark Coyne doesn’t answer to the integrity unit he answers to the Commission but they were only informed yesterday,” Read said.

“Which when you consider anything that happens in club land — they have to inform the integrity unit straight away — that this has been kept away from the Commission for a month is a real concern.

“If he is forced to stand down, and there is a chance he will, it is going to leave a massive hole in the Commission, because he has been a real strong voice since he has been on there.”

Fellow panellist and former Origin teammate of Coyne, Ben Ikin agreed with Read that the incident should have been reported immediately — although he called the alleged incident “out of character” for the 51-year-old former Dragons’ skipper.

ARLC chairman Peter Beattie issued a statement on Wednesday.

“I have had discussions today with Commissioner Mark Coyne in relation to an incident in Singapore,” Beattie said.

“I am currently in Broome and Mark is in Singapore.

“Mark has agreed to stand down from the ARLC until he and I can have a longer conversation about the facts.”

Coyne is the most recent addition to the ARLC board, joining in February, and while he initially expressed opposition to the ARLC’s controversial stand-down policy for any player charged with an offence carrying a criminal penalty of 11 years or more in prison, he later agreed, making the resolution unanimous.

That policy is impacting directly on Coyne’s former club the Dragons, with star forward Jack de Belin set to re-enter Federal Court on Monday seeking to overturn his ban from the game.

De Belin had been charged with aggravated sexual assault after an alleged attack on a 19-year-old woman in a Wollongong unit in the early hours of December 9, 2018.

His lawyers have since launched a scathing attack on the NRL ahead of his return to court on Monday, challenging the validity of the NRL’s claims that existing sponsors threatened to pull out because of a player being charged with a criminal offence.

They believe only about 50 of the 528 pages of emails from fans complaining about player misbehaviour even mentioned de Belin by name.

Former St George Illawarra and Queensland Origin star Mark Coyne has stood down as an ARLC commissioner following an incident in Singapore.

ARLC Chaiman Peter Beattie announced the news on Wednesday afternoon.

"I have had discussions today with Commissioner Mark Coyne in relation to an incident in Singapore," Beattie said in a statement.

"I am currently in Broome and Mark is in Singapore.

"Mark has agreed to stand down from the ARLC until he and I can have a longer conversation about the facts."

Coyne joined the ARL Commission in February and has been touted as a candidate to eventually take over from Beattie as chairman.

The 51-year-old, who played 222 first-grade games for St George and St George Illawarra from 1989-99 as well as six Tests and 19 State of Origin matches for Queensland, has a lengthy background in business.

A former Dragons captain, he is currently Chief Executive of EML, a personal injury claims management firm, and has more than 30 years of experience in the financial services sector in strategic and operational roles.

Beattie said after Coyne's appointment last November that his experience as a player and business leader would be invaluable to the ARLC.

St George Illawarra coach Paul McGregor, who was co-captain of the inaugural joint venture team with Coyne in 1999, offered support for his former centre partner.

"I only know what I've read and it's just out of character," McGregor said.

"He's obviously apologetic, he's a very good man and it's just not in his DNA. I feel for Mark because he's obviously made an error in judgement but it's certainly not in Mark's character."

McGregor did not want to publicly discuss Coyne's future with the ARLC.

"It's not a decision I'm going to talk about," McGregor said. "He'll talk to the commission, I read Mr Beattie's said he's going to have a conversation in the near future."

Overall, the whole as a whole is imploding.

Anybody who is placed in a position that they would not normally be offered in the real world of business, will get found out. If you want to be the best, the days of 'jobs for the boys' doesn't cut it anymore.

The Dragons have a plethora of ex players in positions that they are not entitled to be in but are there, solely on past not related performances.

We are built on a house of cards.
Eventually, it will all come tumbiling down, starting with McGregor................ hopefully.

It's all been taken out of context.

What you don't know is the cab driver is a massive dragons fan and when he asked him about the review Mark did on the dragons and especially the coach - Mark started the rant! F@@@@ this, and F#### that.

Unfortunately, a policeman was walking by and through Mark was attacking the cab driver. When really Mark was going off about Mary as we all do.
