Marks on Timber Beams

Hi all;

I have recently had a timber deck and pergola built and was going to stain it but noticed that there are vertical marks/strips running down sections of the cross beams.

I assume it is where they have had the wood bundled up and tied with those metal strips at the timber yard ??. the wood has weathered around it and the marks are quite prominent.

What can I do to remove these strips before I stain them or is this common ??.

light sand - all you need is a sanding block and a few sheets of sandpaper - but you will need to do the whole thing or it will look patchy. sand with the grain.
