Michael Hussey backs Australia batsman Shaun Marsh to perform against India at WACA Ground

Under-pressure batsman Shaun Marsh has been declared a certain starter for the third Test against India despite being struck down by a bug on Monday.

Marsh was scheduled to front the media in Perth on Monday morning, but had to inform Cricket Australia officials he couldn't fulfil his duties after waking up under the weather.

However, Marsh is expected to recover sufficiently to join in at training on Tuesday, with veteran batsman Mike Hussey confident his West Australian team-mate was in no doubt for the Test.

"He'll be at training tomorrow I'm sure with the boys and preparing as well as he can," Hussey said, filling in for Marsh at the press conference.

Marsh has struggled since returning from a back injury, posting scores of just 0, 3 and 0 over the first two Tests against India.

But Hussey backed the 28-year-old to bounce back in his first Test at his home ground in Perth.

"The WACA crowd always give the local guys a huge welcome and a louder roar than any other player, so he's got plenty of motivation to play exceptionally well in this Test," Hussey said.

"It's always tough when you have been out of the game for over a month to be able to come straight back into Test match cricket and perform straight away.

"It does take a bit of time.

"But he has been working very hard and he's been hitting the ball very well in the nets.

"So it's just a case of him being able to get through that first half an hour of his innings and then if he gets a start, I'm sure he'll want to turn it into a big hundred."

Don't they realise how geniused they sound. You know in bloody under 9s the difference between the nets and playing in the middle. The way these blokes keep going on about it...I wouldn't be surprised if some batsman got backed solely on how good they looked in the nets. FFS.

Well at least it is better than picking Hughes!

Thank you Mrs Hughes...but I am sorry Phillip doesn't know how to not nick the ball to 2nd slip!

have another look at his dismissals, he doesn't nick them

they come off the face of the bat, he literally guides them straight to 2nd slip and in one case he cut it straight to second slip against the Kiwis

I laugh about the 'he's been batting well in the nets' comments as much as the rest of you, because I believe they're garbage and no true indicator of form.

However, having attended all 4 days of the SCG test last week, I can attest that Rahul Dravid was struggling even with throw downs in the nets, giving away several edges and being bowled, yet Clarke looked a million dollars.

Australia coach Mickey Arthur concedes batsman Shaun Marsh is down on confidence, but is backing the talented left-hander to bounce back in the fourth Test against India in Adelaide.

Marsh has endured a torrid time in the Test arena since returning from a back injury, posting scores of 0, 3, 0 and 11 during the current series.

With the injured Shane Watson not expected to return for the fourth Test, Marsh appears set to hold his spot at No.3 for now.

And Arthur was confident it would be just a matter of time before the West Australian, who scored a century on debut in Sri Lanka last September, regained his confidence and played a key role in Australia's Test resurgence.

"As I've said to Shaun ... I think form's temporary and class is permanent and Shaun has definitely got class," Arthur said.

"I think Shaun is probably one of the best batters I've had the privilege of coaching.

End of sidebar. Return to start of sidebar.

"He's got plenty of runs for Australia in him ... he'll be back strong pretty soon I think."

Arthur also had no concerns about Australia's middle order failure in the first innings of the third Test in Perth.

Openers Ed Cowan and David Warner put on 214 for the first wicket, but Marsh (11), Ricky Ponting (7), Michael Clarke (18), Mike Hussey (14) and Brad Haddin (0) all failed to fire as Australia were bowled out for 369.

"No concerns with the middle order," Arthur told ABC radio.

"I think our top six is starting to gel really well and if the stars align and Shaun Marsh gets some run for us down the line, the top six is looking pretty healthy."

Shaun Marsh is worth persisting with as is Phil Hughes and Usman Khawaja. We're talking about young cricketers with obvious talent. Most of the greats have been dropped at some stage and they bounce back bigger and better (Hughes failed in recall and needs that spell away from Test level to work on obvious flaws he has to succeed again). It will be Test for this young guys over the next twelve to eighteen months.
