In other news, the GOAT got absolutely molested by Chris Woakes wannabe David Willey in Canberra tonight. 34 off one over!

Get him in the limited overs side...

He sure showed that nasty selectors.

To be fair Sabermetrics tell us David Willey is the Gary Sobers of the new generation.

England still messing around with all rounders.

Just pick the best bowlers eh Hiney.

What's this pie chucker doing opening the batting for.

Who does he think he is, Sunil bloody Narine. Where's Broad and Anderson?

But in seriousness, I think Willey and the Curran brothers could well get smashed in this t20 tri series, esp in their matches in Straya. Sam Curran was a particularly weak bowler in the BKSS. But surprisingly handy death batting on occassion.

I'll have to disagree with the data there, sure Sobers never demolished the mighty GOAT (actually Sobers is literally the GOAT) but Willey isn't even the best player in his family

David Willey's limited overs international career is rather peculiar. In the late 60's and 1970's it was said England kept Derek Underwood around, just in case of rain, so he was likened to an umbrella (he was "deadly" on sticky dog pitches).

Willey's career has essentially been based around trying to get swing with the new ball and his domestic batting edged out competitors for the role. (Why not go for a very good seamer instead of a handy if it swings bowler like TRJ is a good question if you ask me but he's injured after his breakthrough last England summer) The EWCB selectors and captains haven't particularly liked him as a death option previously, not so peculiar, but he regularly does not complete his 10 overs, nor even get close to; plus he's pretty much a failure with the bat at international level, albeit well in the tail.

Swing bowlers are regularly tried in limited overs, but if they're not death options, captains typically try to bowl them out early. With Willey, they just don't bother. Yet he remains a regular in a winning team when they've dropped plenty of bowlers. OKay, there's injury cover selections and all that, but even still.

He played 6 home ODI's last year (only bowled in 5 due to weather) - didn't bowl more than 6 overs in any game. But the games in the off season tour before as well that really paint a picture:

But England keep on picking him and playing him, just in case there's some swing.
