Ever seen Birds step? It is a real step. Not some hop. Bird is a international captain like SS said. Bird was called the next fittler but we don't wank over him as unlike some clubs we have more than 1 talented player in our team.

What I don't understand is the first part of his step, a jump in the air. He isn't moving fast, he isn't changing his direction. Surely this makes him more vulnerable, as it gives the defender time to hammer him. On most occasions a defender just has to commit to the tackle and they will shut him down.

Benji Marshall will be a superstar if handled correctly. Which I think he is.

I'm not sticking up for Bird. Peachey doesn't jump in the air, when they commit to a tackle they realise he can change his direction. You can't change your direction mid-air, the only way you are going is down.

Obviously your not watching properly or marshalls moves are faster than your eyes can comprehend.
That is not what he does. He is just lightning on his feet.

naa he does the jump step. its from his touch background. its by no means a sluggish hop though, its f**king impossible to read. Just about every bloke that plays above NSW level utilises the jump/skip/hop/f**k-knows step. It aint as easy as it looks

Fair enough, I don't think it's sluggish but it just looks to me that it gives the defenders more time than usual to hammer him. The jump is a precursor to a step.

It just taking weight off both legs simultaneously.
When you step, this is what you must do. Take the weight off one leg.
Those that step with both feet need to be able to take the weight off both legs.
Then you have the freaks. The ones who haven't decided which foot they are going to step off.
The longer they have the weight off the legs, the more decision time they have.
The better the stepper, the longer the ..lets call it the "float"
They will float & read the defender then step accordingly.
