Mateo is just as similar to Sutton has he was to SBW. Just because a player is a big strong ball playing backrower does not mean they play the same game.
Mateo runs to the line alot more, he has a much better passing game and offloads alot more aswell. Mateo plays like a lock irrespective of if his in the 6 or 13.

Sutton prefers to go play before the line and has a better kicking game, TBH it would probably be a better argument compare Sutton and Anasta, who IMO have more similar style games then Sutton v Mateo.

Anyway Mateo is simply a better player by a long way, even out of form he would make more meter and tackles then most backrower and creates alot more second phase play. When in form he is basically untouchable.

both are great, and have the ability to break open a game. coaches go to them when they need points. they have great attackin qualities but are big enough to put-in in defence. They never get dominated defensively, unlike smaller 5/8's...

but mateo is a special talent who can play any position, has brains, passion and toughness. behind a dominant pack, he seems to play a basketball style game, whereby he moves the ball in all directions.

For the record to whoever says Mateo is the better playmaker- Sutton has played 18 games. Scored 3 tries. 5 linebreaks. 18 Line Break Assists. 46 offloads. 45 tackle breaks and 22 Try Assists. He has pretty much set up or played a major part in most of the tries Souths have scored this year, which is more tries than any other team BTW. ;)

Pretty much exactly what I was going to say. But of course, you get some tards that spout nonsense like "he has 1 good game in 10" when really, he's been our best player just about every week and has had one bad game this year (vs Bulldogs)

Hey Bumble just leave them be. They can have there public cricle jerk over Mateo, whilst we just sit here quietly watching Sutton win us game after game. :)

Since the beginning of 2008, Sutton has played 42 games, and Mateo 31. In that period:

Sutton (per game) has made 0.8 try assists, 0.8 linebreak assists, 2.4 offloads, 2.8 tackle breaks, 0.4 linebreaks, and 0.9 errors.

Mateo (per game) has made 0.6 try assists, 0.9 linebreak assists, 3.1 offloads, 3.4 tackle breaks, 0.4 linebreaks, and 1.4 errors.

They are both very, very good players. Sutton probably creates a few more tries, whereas Mateo creates a bit more second phase play, however also makes more errors.

Sutton has had a better 2009 so far but when both of them are at their best Mateo is the better player IMO

Sutton one bad game?? Are we ignoring the Knights game where he was a perpetual embarrassment?

thanks for the stats. they give great insight.

but ca nu add the metres gained and tackles?

i think mateo runs twice as many metres.

Both are fantastic players.

Mateo was the better player in 07/08 but since struggling with injury Sutton has been the stand out in 09.

Im a big fan of both of these guys, but I would probably take John Sutton.

Has awesome running game and skills with it, awesome passing game, (I think he ahs the best left to right passing game in the NRL, which is usually players weaker sides to pass) a good kicking game, can play lock and five eight, and can really threaten the line.

Helps that he's left handed, but I agree with your general consensus ;-).
