Yeah no thanks. When has averillo destroyed us on numerous occasions? I mean Hes not a bad player that does some good things but but we can do better than this mate. Very low bar. Plus we have Val and suli in the centres. You want to pay him 500k a year to play nsw cup?
I may be inflating his abilities a smidgen but he seems a consistent type with defensive abilities.

Courtesy ai because my memory is shot:

Jake Averillo has scored multiple tries against the St. George Illawarra Dragons during his NRL career, most notably:
June 14, 2021 (Round 14): Playing for the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs, Averillo scored three tries (a hat-trick) in a 28-6 win against the Dragons.
April 30, 2023 (Round 9): Playing for the Bulldogs, he scored two tries in an 18-16 victory over the Dragons.
May 29, 2022 (Round 12): Playing for the Bulldogs, he scored two tries in a 34-24 loss against the Dragons.
In addition to these, Averillo (now with the Dolphins) has frequently played against the Dragons in 2024 and 2025.

Never trust AI! Averillo scored 2 tries in that 2021 game, not 3 (a hat-trick).

Remember when you lot were happy dufty left the club ? He tore us a new one last night. Duff is way better than Gutho and Sloan combined
He might have matured and gained confidence over in the UK. But we make alot of opposition players look like immortals. In saying that I would definitely have him in front of Sloan. In front of Gutho, definitely for speed but Gutho brings organisation and leadership, if Dufty has improved that part of his game then yes in front of Gutho as well.

We didn't put any real pressure on Dufty last night. He may have improved his game from when he was with us, but we could have intimidated him into making mistakes like the Dufty we remember. No rag dolling. No monstering him under the high ball. No trying to put him off his game. Nothing. We have a history of former players playing well against us, like they're trying to tell us something.
It may have been a trial, but I'm so guttered last night from the bunnies game last night.

Dufty missed Cook on the line.... lets see if he starts in 1st grade....

We Gifted Souths 2 tries...blew one with the try line wide open..

We looked clunky.... Disappointing but only a trial.
Yes I agree.....lets see how Dufty goes when the comp starts proper against teams like the Donkeys, Panthers Melbourne etc ( should he get a start in FG )....not trying to downsize his performance last night but the room and latitude we gave him was embarrassing tbh....anyhow he grabbed the opportunity with both hands so good on him..... unfortunately players of his ilk like Sloan have speed to burn but defensive issues and consistency is why they struggle in other departments of the game....at least 18 points went astray last night therefore trial game or not we can ill afford to repeat come the pointy end of the season

If that was a regular season game (not the week before we leave for Vegas) there is no way Gutho let's Dufty score that last try.

Dufty is on a nswrl contract, definitely not playing nrl currently (not to mention the 2 players in front of him).

I gotta give him credit, he's thickened up and bends the line when he hits it with intent now.. He never ever ever did that previously..

That said he is very motivated right now to get a contract so whether he would sustain the intensity.. Who knows.. And in defence he had some poor moments... Id definitely take him over sloan though.. But I think we can do better for our 2027 fullback whoever that is.

Gutho would of made every effort to hold on and wrap him up. Sloan had a lazy attempt
Yup there were 2 other dragons players already holding the ball-carrier so he could really only fall forward, Sloan just needed to hug him, or just do anything that involved placing his body being in front of the ball.. but he ran right past him....

Its that plus the way his head goes down when there is a loose ball/pass/intercept, its just not just 1 time.. it seems every time like its a hard-coded reaction before he kinda clicks that hes meant to do something.. hes the fastest guy out there.. imagine if he started chasing immediately.... Flanno would be fuming at that sort of stuff..

Dufty revealed that a phone call with former Dragon Ben Hornby about returning to Australia led to conversations with Souths head coach Wayne Bennett about getting the livewire fullback a NSW Cup contract.
"I decided to come home and called Benny Hornby just to ask him for some advice. He spoke to Wayne and called me back the next day, said, 'give Wayne a call'. It just went from there, we signed the Cup deal just to come in and train," he said.

"I just want to put my best foot forward. They've got a stacked squad, I just wanted an opportunity and I'm very grateful for it."

On at least 3 occasions Dufty took the ball from Dummy Half on the 5th tackle and turned an average set into an attacking 5th tackle option for Souths.

The only problem is that if Dufty plays FOR us then he doesn't get to play against us. Only the Dragons could make him look like a superstar, against any other team he is borderline 1st grade.
And there's the rub, we are not quite a 1st grade outfit so bring Dufry back into our set up and watch how quickly he gets exposed by quality teams.......just like before.

@Gareth67 always said that Duf was never the same after he had to ring members directly and apologise for breaching covid rules at Vaughnys.

That was the start of the current era spiralling out of control.

Or maybe that passing incident v souths in the finals. That was hard to cop.

Anyway, you’ll have to see who’s left standing by round 12. If you have some luck with injuries, you can make the finals.
