I knew that would happen, you can win a few games with Duffy but thats about it, there is no way this club can go to great height with Duffy, I love the guy but he is not the answer and neither was Mcinnes , if we dont get Hynes there a re many options starting with out own Juniors and perhaps that is what the coaching staff is looking at.
Hook doesnt Mind young Players, and we have a few .

Star St George Illawarra fullback Matt Dufty told he's 'free to go' by Dragons

St George Illawarra has told Matt Dufty that he is "free to go" as the Dragons look to part ways with their star fullback.

Off-contract for some time now, Dufty recently revealed talks over an extension at the Red V had stalled despite being arguably one of the Dragons' best performers week-in week-out.

But, speaking on Nine's 100% Footy, veteran league reporter Danny Weidler revealed the Dragons were eager to move Dufty on and potentially target boom Storm gun Nicho Hynes.

"It's my understanding that Matt Dufty has been told by the Dragons that he is free to go. I don't think they want him for next year," Weidler said.

"The information I've got is that he's been told they don't want him and 'go look around'. All the information I've got is that they don't want him at the club.

"I'm hearing perhaps they're looking at Nicho Hynes. But I don't know what Matt Dufty has done wrong as a footballer.

"They've had a chance to re-sign him for a while now at the Dragons and they've decided not to."

NRL guru Phil Gould, who conducted a top-down internal review at the Dragons in 2019, revealed plans to push Dufty out the door had been in place for some time now.

"They've been trying to move him for two off-seasons. I'm not going to go any further than that, it's just the truth," Gould said.

"Matt's aware of that and the Dragons have certainly got other plans.

"As to the reasons why the Dragons don't want him, I don't think that it's football related."

Matt Dufty 'free to go' as Dragons turn attention to Nicho Hynes

The Dragons have reportedly informed off-contract fullback Matt Dufty to find another home for next season with the club poised to enter the race for Melbourne's Nicho Hynes.

Channel Nine reporter Danny Weidler claims the lightning quick Dufty, who is currently sidelined with a shoulder injury, has been informed by Dragons management he won't be re-signed beyond this year.

Dufty has been the Red V's most damaging attacking weapon over the past two seasons, however talks over an extension haven't progressed as the season has worn on.

Back in April, after leading the Dragons to their fourth straight win with a dominant individual performance against the Eels, Dufty admitted his future in Wollongong was still "touch and go" despite his strong start to the year.

Weidler told Nine's 100% Footy the Dragons have now informed Dufty he's free to look elsewhere, with the Red V understood to be interested in breakout Storm fullback Hynes.

BREAKING: Understand that Matt Dufty has been told by Dragons he is not going to be signed by the club. Broke the news on @100percentfooty last night - believe the club chasing Nicho Hynes. @NRLonNine @9NewsSyd will discuss on @BigSportsBrekky

Dufty has scored 44 tries in 77 games for the Dragons since debuting in 2017 and leads the tryscoring tally for the club this year with eight.

While it's news that could stun some of the Red V faithful, Dragons coach Anthony Griffin has been pressed over Dufty's future continuously throughout the year and hinted the club wasn't in a rush to re-sign him.

"He's good, he's been improving (but) he needs to," Griffin said after the win over Parramatta.

"He's a really good kid and he's learning the fine arts of playing fullback in tight football games, like he did tonight.

"He needs to keep improving to unlock his potential.

"That's the challenge with a lot of us. He's always been great with the ball, that's never been a question, it's about mastering his craft as a fullback at this level.

"He's worked really hard."

Rugby league guru Phil Gould, who oversaw a review of St. George Illawarra's football department in the wake of their horror 2019 season, said Dufty has been on the outer at the club for some time due to matters that don't necessarily relate to football.

"They've been trying to move him for two off-seasons. I'm not going to go any further than that, it's just the truth," Gould said on 100% Footy.

"Matt's aware of that and the Dragons have certainly got other plans.

"As to the reasons why the Dragons don't want him, I don't think that it's football related."

The Dragons are now poised to enter the race for Hynes, whose emergence since stepping in for the injured Ryan Papnehuyzen at fullback for Melbourne has caught the eyes of many across the competition.

Off-contract next season, the Storm are resigned to losing Hynes, who's expressed his intentions to secure a regular starting spot with his next deal, something he won't be guaranteed in Melbourne.

The Broncos are widely reported to have shown interest in the Sunshine Coast product but are yet to have offered him a contract.

A good little mental exercise to play when something like this happens is to ask yourself the following question:

How would [insert departing player] go at Melbourne, or the Roosters?

Your answer might say more about our coaching and development than it does about the player involved

Exactly correct....If for whatever reason Griffin/Gentle and Elliott have come to this conclusion, there will be a good reason. Always had high hopes for Matty Dufty...just too inconsistent. ..rocks or diamonds.,,and that is after many years in the top grade. Wish him all the best .

Fab let’s get rid of a chap who runs like the wind and scored 40 plus NRL trys. One of them in my opinion the best individual try in the past decade against top class opposition. He also sets up trys with sublime passing. We can then buy a high priced slow poke at big $$$ on a 5 year deal hahaha.

Melbourne stack their side with speed Paps, JAC, Hughes, Reims Smith. Dragons seem to hate speed. No one wins without speed. Dragons 2010= Soward, Gasnier, Cooper, Morris, Boyd. ( all among the fastest players then in 2010.

This is exactly how I feel rasaint. Unless the Dragons have someone in mind who has more speed than Dufty and can defend like Hercules, I am happy to keep him on our books. I know he has been in our system for many years already and one would think that he would have developed into a more confident defender and taker of high balls etc. but it could also be that the coaching staff he has had just don't know how to coach that into him. If it was Bellamy and any other astute coaches that Dufty would play under, he would have learned much more and gained the confidence he currently needs.

Maybe it is a personal attitude problem that he has that cannot be changed for some reason and that affects the way he plays and the coaches have run out of patience.

Anyway, I suppose that Hook and Co. know what they are doing, or do they?

Well, as long as they have a top class player like Hynes or Pappy signed NOW i will go along with this. A 3 year contract gives the young in's a chance to develop BUT if we haven't and replace him with a "safe tried & tested NRL hardened No1" i will be spewing "

I'd say the new staff have given him some homework to do and KPI's on improvement that he hasn't either taken seriously or is in denial that he needs it. Or he is thick as a brick. I hope that all is not true as i wish him the best.

Would we say Duffy is elusive?
Yes.

As for the dragons not resigning him I'm as surprised as the experts but if it's for reasons not football related then it's something behind the scenes as his football has been very good the past 2 seasons.

If we can sign someone better then that'd be good, if it's milford or someone on that tier then fmd.

Jezzus H Chrust ! Don’t go throwing the sausages out in the bin until you have actually bought that juicy T-bone steak to replace it .

They have given the Duff his marching orders so as to - wait for it “ enter the race for Nico Hynes “ . They have not signed him as off yet , but are going to enter the race along with gawd knows how many other clubs .

The Dragons must be supremely confident of coming first in this race , why else would they release our only potent attacking weapon . I hope for their sakes that their expectations of landing his signature are fulfilled otherwise we will be in all sorts of trouble next season .
