Matt Dufty

All I will say is we will lose a lot once Dufty is gone. However, if Hook and Co. are not happy with him to be our fullback because he doesn't fit the total fullback bill, then whomever takes his spot MUST have those total fullback qualifications NOW, not to work on and develop and be given a chance in first grade but NOW.

Understand what you are saying @Dragon David , but it doesn't always workout like this....sloan may well be our long term fullback....it would be crazy to play him in our already depleted lineup...maybe when we get more troups onboard....dufty fades in and out of games....his defense is not up to 1st grade standard....

I think we need to trust Griffin and co on this one...short term pain for long term gain.

Mickey and Slippery,

plenty of us on the forum have played RL and been around watching all our lives. The 3 experienced coaches are just human. None have won a comp, but probably haven’t had the cattle to do so anyway. They hold opinions of players as all of us do. We differ ourselves sometimes significantly.

Me example; from the get go I felt Zac Lomax was overhyped and not even near as good as some rated him. Of course, others differed and still call him a SOO player. Brad Fitler described him as the gifted one.( I have a personal suspicion that any dragons player talked up by Gus etc, will be ordinary just trying to spook dragons into paying inflated long term contracts). I believe Zac is simply an unremarkable NRL player and on the lower tier of NRL players. You can’t coach speed. Still many on forum would disagree and say that locking in a 6 year $500k year contract was good business.

I have been cautious about Cody Ramsey. Again he has carried much hype. He is reasonably quick but not NRL express speed. In the NRL he does not have a great impact as he did in lower competitions. He is not busting the line with pace, power and fend. A lower tier NRL player I fear recently contracted long term.

I never wanted the McGuire recruitment ( 3 years end of 2023 I think). He seemed to arrive and play ok but other forwards just appeared to ‘drop their bundle’ after his arriving.

Matt Dufty is not an elite player. However, he sniffs out a break and his blistering NRL level express speed has carried him to 40 plus NRL trys in under 4 actual years. Some of his trys are individual efforts so sublime that they are almost unique. Generally he catches the high balls but his lack of size finds him jostled in those close contests. His defence is OK not great. Unless this ‘secret amazing player purchase’ is Teddy, Paps or Turbo at fullback, keep him for another two years if $400k or less. IMO Cody Ramsey hasn’t got it guys and gals for NRL fullback. Maybe Sloan or other names that Possm throws up may but who knows?

Whilst I am getting sick of Hook and his dads army ( I gather he is signing off recruitment) in fairness we are desperately under strength due to tragic round brunt of heavy suspensions and the dreaded injury stick. Once we get most of the team back we will be much more competitive.

Many may disagree with this, but I think you raise some very good points.

Esp. in regards to how highly we tend to rate some of our juniors.

Our new coach should not be free of scrutiny either.

I may be alone on this, but I am getting tired of the old rebuild argument. He knew what he had when he took the job, he brought in the likes of McCulloch and co. and said early on this wasn't a rebuild project. Refer to his presser when appointed.

One thing is for sure hook will not give any direct info or bait to the media. Just got to listen to the carefully constructed spin in his words. I like it.

Correct
In his game press conference he won't even state the obvious when quizzed on the teams performance which is 'half my team is sitting on the sidelines and the forwards I have at my disposal just don't compete'.

True...unlike the previous maestro who had every excuse under the sun....just waiting for the article on how we would have been better off with him still in charge........LOL

What is Hook doing to address the obvious ball security issues we have? How many games in a row until this is considered an issue? He keeps bringing up the fact that we have to make more tackles but is also happy for us to concede a plethora of 6 agains. even when we were winning we were giving away more 6 agains than any other team. I think that is bad coaching, sorry to say, but he has a long way to go to get to where Mary was.

Whilst it is true, no coach worth a grain of salt is going to bag his players as not up to it, especially if he has to run the same blokes out next week due to injury or suspension.

my 2 cents though, if he had balls he’d drop Norman. He needs the reality check of a few games in reggies

Are you serious?...you would prefer McGregor over Griffin...Really??

No I meant he has long way to go to be as bad as Mary was. Still, patterns are appearing that could easily be coached out but they aren't. Every week, dropped ball, dumb penalties and 6 agains.

They have been doing it for 8 years...our 1st grade team is decimated...players out of position...we haven't had a settled lineup due to injuries and suspensions....Am I happy with how we are going...No I hate losing but i can see an upside...under McGregor we would have lost those games by plenty I.M.H.O...

Anyway its just my opinion and at the end of the day that matters little...

Not here to argue with people...Just think we need to give Griffin a fair go....

He will have his fair go. As you say, what we say matters little to anyone making decisions - please see my sack McGregor thread from 2016...saw the writing on the wall even after he had been given a fair go. As fans of a very famous club we are allowed to have our passionate opinion. Very keen to hear about these signings we are about to make but, as fans, we aren't privy to that info and if we believe our coach, they aren't signing anyone...Respect has to be earnt. His team keeps doing the same dumb things and that is irrelevant to who he has available.

Most of us didn't even want McGregor....I stated that before we signed him...

People have already answered in regards to the club not passing on info re signings etc....if you want to create/believe your own narrative, you are entitled to do so....

In regards to the silly mistakes, we haven't had a consistent line up week in week out...last night Beale played his 1st game for us ...paired next to williame on the right side who is a left side specialist...WHY...because we are down on troops....

I hate seeing us lose, but there is a difference this year...they are trying...Bird shedding a tear in the sheds is better than seeing players laugh after being flogged 50 - 0 @ full-time under the previous regime.

Time will judge Griffin....that is something that we can start to discuss towards the end of next year....

Considering the previous regime had 7 1/2 years of failure, that would at least be a fair call.

I had a look at the stats for our games to date this year compared to last. This year we are coming third in errors and we are making more errors per game than last year. We are coming second for missed tackles and we are missing more tackles per game than last year. In terms of attack we seem to be doing about the same as last year based on line breaks and run-metres. Just statistics? Maybe, maybe not.

I really don't know what to think. I take your point that Hook deserves a fair go. But from an outsider looking in so far his achievements are limited to hiring a bunch of players on the wrong side of 30, and publicly saying he won't be re-signing our best attacking player.

It doesn't inspire confidence

I just hope Hook and Co are up with the times as what sort of players are needed as the game changes ....

Fair points...But he has been in the job for 11 games....in terms of last year , or any other year from previous memory I cannot remember our squad being so decimated through suspensions and injuries...maybe I am wrong, but it seems we are extremely skinny at the moment....

If hook has a plan to bring through youth, then you need experience....Would mcGregor have landed Mcguire,Mccullough and the others you are alluding to with the other club paying part of the freight ?

If you take corey norman as an example the answer is a resounding no....under McGregor we paid Overs...that is not happening anymore...

stats don't always give the full picture....

I feel the tension rising to the announcement of a signing or two. These recruits will be crucial to our success and, more to the point, Griffin's as coach.

After watching last night’s game we have nothing in attack without Dufty. It is puzzling why Hook wants him gone when we struggle to score without him.
We have JP, Williame, Beale, Norman and a new fullback. Add that to halves that are not doing much and forwards that are easily dominated, we got what we deserved..

I say, get rid of the trouble makers and the players on the way down. Recruit a another new prop, B Smith at hooker and Hynes at fullback. Let the young guns earn their spots by winning their first grade positions. No more entitled players.

I'm hoping for a prop, B Smith and Hynes. We have the cap for all three if we let Norman, JP, Dufty,Elis, McInnes and maybe one other go at the end of the year.

In 2022 we might have:
1. Sloan
2. Ramsey
3. Feagai
4. Lomax
5. Ramsey
6. Sullivan
7. Hunt
8. New prop
9. B Smith
10. Vaughan
11. Sims
12. Bird
13. De Belin

14. McCullough
15. Molo
16. Lawrie
17. Burns / Amone

I think Ramsay may struggle to fill both wing positions, I'm still not convinced about him at all actually
