Tell me one other player that could have scored that try. Who in our team can actually catch anymore?

You have a point. Dufty scored a gem but our problem under the high ball, and for that matter defusing any type of kick, will hold us back all year at this rate. Norman I don't think has the pace to play fullback anymore while adding another very small player in Field into our backline mix would cause just as many problems.

He's mesmerising to watch for a total of 2 or 3 minutes a game every couple of weeks. Other than that, he has no energy defending on his line, his kick returns are a total waste of time as he just surrenders at the line and tries to get to the ground to avoid being rag dolled and he is shit scared under the high ball if defenders are zeroing in on him. Yes, his moments of brilliance are scintillating, however, the rest of his game is not NRL standard, not even close.

If we had Cotric on one wing and Rapana on the other, i'd say we could live with Dufty's glaring deficiencies at fullback and just take the benefit of his moments of brilliance, but we don't and i think Lomax would offer much more balance and stability under the circumstances.

Matt Dufty try was sheer brilliance making the 'best team in the world' look like under 9's. No one else in NRL could of scored that try in such scintillating fashion. Admittedly he needs to fix his ball security and taking bombs under pressure. One thing for sure if we don't stick with him other clubs will be lining up to take him off our hands.

Other clubs will be lining up to take him off our hands? Hahahaha please, name one that would take him as their starting fullback?

The try was brilliant but the rest of his play is crap, if we had a solid fullback we would have beaten the roosters even if you take the try out of it.

He does not provide any security, his positioning is still poor and his physicality is non existent. Also there were a number of times he injected himself into the backline between Norman and Lafai when Lafai close to the line with early ball is very dangerous.

He has had almost a season and a half of first grade and his deficiencies are still there and have not improved.

Cronulla, yes.
Canberra/Titans, no. CNK and Brunson are both on par with Dufty at worst, with less deficiencies to work on.
Cowboys, maybe if they don’t get Holmes back.

Only other club would be Bulldogs.

Every other club is fairly well set up with a good option. It’s a golden age for fullbacks.

Agree mate , but Norman doesn't score that try .... Dufty needs to be in the team , and if not starting as fullback should be injected at the right time in games , not 5 min from the end when the game is over .....
I think it is time to try something different. Dufty did score a really great try, there is no denying it however, he did struggle under the high ball and in defence; that's where he was at late last year and that is the main reason Widdop was selected ahead of him at fullback.

It's time to put Dufty on the wing. Teach him to go to ground when taking a high ball near his line and to make his way infield when carrying the ball into the defence. He is fast and allusive just as Slippery Morris used to be and I am sure could score a multitude of tries if selected on the left or right wing.

If Mary wants to persist with Aitken at 3 (I don't believe he should) then select Lomax at fullback and see how he goes. It is no good just doing the same old same old because the same errors continue to occur and we just don't have the backline talent to keep backing up those errors. So for the Eels game, I'd suggest the following 17:

1. Lomax
2. Dufty
3. Aitken - only because I have to
4. Lafai
5. Pearson
6. Norman
7. Hunt - Field if Hunt is injured
8. Vaughan
9. McInnes
10. Kerr
11. Sims
12. Frizell
13. Lawrie

14. Robson - McInnes needs a break towards the end of each half
15. Graham
16. Host
17. Leilua

If you could coach the fear of taking a bomb out of him, he'd be a terrific FB. But unfortunately he's 23, going on 40 NRL games and he still looks like a potato underneath a high kick... He'll forever be an X-Factor with huge deficiencies in his game imo. Hopefully wrong, because Ive been a Dufty advocate since seeing him in SG ball.

Possm Dufty to wing won't work too small , he will be rag dolled over the side line with ease. High balls will be coming at him non stop .... The days of small wingers like you say Morris , Bouststead are gone ... Big tall athletic is the go ....

‘More steps than the Opera House’: Jinking Dufty goes 60m to leave Tedesco in his wake

Matt Dufty scored a try for the ages as he dragged the St George-Illawarra Dragons back into the Anzac Day contest against the Sydney Roosters.
Coming out of the Dragons’ half, the fullback stepped past Angus Crichton, Zane Tetevano and Cooper Cronk.

A gap opened up inside him, and the Dragons No. 1 needed no further invitation to burn his way past the covering Boyd Cordner to charge into open space.

James Tedesco scorched across to close him down, but Dufty was too smart and sidestepped to the left, leaving the NSW Blues and Kangaroos No. 1 in his wake.

Dufty was honing in on the line, but Cronk was tracking back to cover him.

The Dragons fullback shimmied left once, and then right again before crashing over as Latrell Mitchell tried to close him down.

Andrew Voss described the try in commentary as having “more steps than the Opera House.”

Lomax should possibly be given a run at fullback just to see how he goes but I would stick with Dufty. Billy Slater had the errors under the high ball in his early years and only got better the longer he played.

You need to stick with Dufty as he provides that x factor in attack.
