Matt Elliot - What are your thoughts now Raiders fans?

Canberra look set for an unlikely top 8 finish.

From the beginning of the season, there were a lot of Canberra fans out in force laying the boot into Elliot, yet he's managed to turn a virtual no-frills side into potential semi-finalists, if not better.

Penrith fans should be salivating at the thought of Elliot coming to the foot of the mountains next season. If he's able to achieve what he has with the current Raiders outfit, imagine what he could do with a side that boasts the likes of Gower, Lewis, Wesser, Puletua, Priddis, Waterhouse, Rodney, Rooney, perhaps Wing, etc?

So what are your thoughts raiders fans? Any regrets? Any humble pie consumption?

*Raiders Fan Mode* Matt Elliott has had one of the most talented squads in the NRL to deal with and has clearly failed */Raiders fan mode*

I haven't been an anti-Elliott crusader throughout his entire time with the Raiders, for the most part I think he's done an OK job with the cattle he's had.

But you have to watch our last month's worth of football, which is easily the best brand of footy we've played in 5 years, and you have to ask yourself where it's been. Raiders fans know that we have the talent in the backs with the likes of Carney, Graham and now Mogg who in my opinion has been the form centre in the comp over the last 2 months (and it'd be hard to disagree with me if you seriously watch Raiders games), but only now is he using them to their full extent.

You've all said it before, how we're such a boring team, one-up, one-out style of play. In previous years we've lacked points. Now we're arguably playing an expansive style and it's working out, and credit should be given to Elliott. But at the same time, the question has to be asked, why now? If this type of football was being played a few years ago, then most fans here would not be calling for his head on a regular basis. You can't deny that.

Elliott is a dolt

You should've asked this question last week when we were pumelled by Souths. Elliot blamed our loss on preperation, and we've lost plenty of gimme wins this season.

Yesterday Carney was FINALLY given the starting role in a near full strength side and played superb.

Mate, the Raiders are on 24 points. They're in the Top 8.

Surely Elliot deserves some credit don't you think?

of course he does, some credit for sure
but ill give you an example of something that sums up elliott easily

yesterday, he finally gathered the balls to start todd carney at half, good on him, well done elliott

however Dane Tilse who is argueably our form forward besides weyman, was dropped, and no one, ABSOLUTELY NO ONE can understand why...

One step forward, two steps back
ill be happy to see the back of the git

we are on 24 points, but had we knocked over souths, parra and penrith when we should of, we'd be on 30 points...

Give and take mate.

There's always going to be the "Had we..." and "If only........" scenarios. What if Penrith beat you in golden point in round 4? The raiders might have found it even harder to gain momentum. Instead, you won, and after 22 rounds you're in the top 8!

I would put it more as a two steps forward, one step back at this point. Elliot isn't perfect, but he's obviously doing something right.

Do you think he'll do a good job at the Panthers next season?

:x x3 means I was f3cking pissed off he said that, after getting towelled up by the Raiders.

One of the most stupid comments I have heard from a coach in recent memory. Not because of anything to do with Matt Elliott, but what the hell was he saying??

He was outcoached?? He's not as good??? Great way to instill confidence in your team and fans Browny....And his postmatch comments last Friday didn't give me much faith either.

Eerily reminded me of the Brian Smith "Deer in the headlights" sideline interview just prior to the Cowboys Major Semi last year.

I would like it if a pro-Elliott'er and someone who's trying to stir us up, could respond to my points, because no one's done it yet, which suggests they are valid...

IMO Elliot has been a solid coach for Raiders. Looking at his squad, it's not the best on paper. You can't entirely blame every loss on the coach. Sometimes a team is going to get outplayed no matter the circumstances. Raiders aren't close to being one of the best teams... but Elliot has made them perform solid and aside from a few embaressing games... gotten good results out of the Raiders.

Panthers easily have a more solid team... and Elliot should be able to take them to a top 8 finish. Well, depending on what they do about the 5/8 situation. If they end up with Craig Wing, yeah, top 8 for sure.

Panthers will be better off with Elliot. He gets the most out of his team. John Lang got the most out if it in 2003... and since then has progressively gotten less each year. Things like insisting the Preston Campbell defend on the wing... and when Gower was hurt, playing Lewis/Campbell as our halves were just poor decisions. Moving our team around to fix an injury... when we could've brought Craig Trindall up and solved it simply.

A change of coaching should be a good thing for Panthers. With Wesser, Gower, Gordon, Puletua, Priddis, Prithcard, Rodney, Cross etc. on the team... they have the players for a top 8 side without doubt.

Matt Elliot is the KING of selecting players out of position. This is the guy who's played Croker, Gafa, Terry Martin, Withers and Drew in the halves, and he's persisted with some of them for very long periods.

I'm all for experimenting if need be. But Lang won't budge. Elliot has a bit of variation with his changes.

But i don't approve of moving Campbell out of the No. 6. Priddis out of the No. 9 or Lewis into the halves. Lewis is not a playmaker... he's barely coping as a centre. Priddis is a great Hooker... why use him as a half-back when Gower is hurt? Preston is a really solid 5/8 and our only real choice... why use him at half-back if Gower is injured.

Trindall should've been used when Gower was hurt. I can understand shifting positions when you lose him in a game and you have to make do. But whatever. I also think we should be playing with a utility on our bench. Someone like Trindall instead of Swain while Aiton is hurt.

Matt Elliot has the most talented Junior I have ever seen playing in PL. Zillman scored 5 tries in PL yesterday and set up another 3 leading us to a 78- 6 win over the sharks. he is the most talented player I have ever seen pull on a green Jersey in the last 10 years, and yet Elliot fails to select him week in/week out.

Elliot also loves playing hookers at halfback. Last week against the bunnies, Lincoln withers was selected at half, whilst our best half in the club is warming the bench. Elliot then decides to bring him on after we are down 20 - 0. What other coach starts their best half off the bench??? How would you panther fans feel if Paul Aton started at half and Gower was put on the bench until midway through the first half?

The whole week leading up to the bunnies clash us raider fans were wondering why the f**k Carney was on the bench, knowing full well how useless Withers is at half. Finally this week he learnt from his pathetic error and started carney and we looked the goods right from the start.

Now had Elliot had half a brain - we would already have cemented ourselves in the top 8 and probably the top 4.
