A-team set for big screen
10:01 AEST Wed Oct 13 2004

Eighties' TV show The A-Team is being remade for the big screen.

The series, which featured the action-packed adventures of "Hannibal" Smith, "BA" Baracus, "Faceman" Peck and "Howling Mad" Murdock, will be placed in a contemporary setting.

Muscleman Mr T (Lawrence Tero), who starred in the original with George Peppard, could be brought back for the new film, although not as BA - whose initials stood for Bad Attitude.

The original featured four Vietnam vets on the run after escaping from a US military prison.

Unjustly framed for robbing the Bank of Hanoi, the team go about helping the innocent while evading the clutches of the law themselves.

James Bond screenwriter Bruce Feirstein is writing the movie version of the popular US series, which ran from 1983 to 1987, according to the Hollywood industry bible Variety.

Stephen J Cannell, who created the original show, is co-producing the new movie for Fox.

He said: "Mr T and I had lunch last week, and I'd really like to have him in the movie, although we haven't begun casting.

"I always think it's nice to see the stars of the old show in cameo roles in the movie.

"But obviously he won't be playing BA Baracus."

The new movie will be more serious and "less cartoony" than the light-hearted TV series, in the vein of action movies Die Hard and Lethal Weapon.

Mr Cannell said: "Not to denigrate the TV show, but nobody ever died.

"We drove cars off cliffs and people got out and walked away. We're not going to do that (in the movie).

"In this the tone is more dangerous ... you can really die. It's very tense and exciting."

Vietnam could be replaced by the Gulf, although no details have been announced.

"A-Team" Movie Ramping Up

We love it when a plan comes together.

The long in the works big-screen version of the 1980s action series The A-Team is moving closer to megaplexes.

The show's mastermind, Stephen J. Cannell, and The A-Team movie's home base, 20th Century Fox, have hired veteran James Bond screenwriter Bruce Feirstein to pen the script, the studio confirmed to E! Tuesday.

The film has been in development for years, but Cannell says that the project is now gaining momentum.

The popular one-hour series, which ran from 1983 to 1987 on NBC, followed the high-octane adventures of a group of Vietnam vets ready to right the wrongs committed against the innocent while on the run for a crime they didn't commit.

According to Cannell, the A-Team flick will be updated to reflect current political issues. The film will also forego the cartoonish nature of the tube version in favor of more serious action à la Die Hard and Lethal Weapon.

"Not to denigrate the TV show, but nobody ever died," the producer says in Variety. "We drove cars off cliffs and people got out and walked away. We're not going to do that [in the movie]. In this the tone is more dangerous-you can really die. It's very tense and exciting."

Cannell, who's producing the movie with Spike Seldin and Mark Silvestri, says he wants to bring new fans into the A-Team fold without alienating those who grew up watching the show. He hopes the hiring of Feirstein will accomplish that.

A contributing editor for Vanity Fair, Feirstein played a key role in relaunching the 007 franchise and updating Ian Fleming's martini-swilling superagent for the '90s with his scripts for 1995's Golden Eye, 1997's Tomorrow Never Dies and 1999's The World Is Not Enough.

Feirstein has also written for the New York Times and New Yorker and pens the "Diary" column in the New York Observer.

Still no word who'll direct The A-Team, and casting has yet to get underway.

But don't expect to see the original stars reprise their roles.

George Peppard, who played the crew's wise-cracking, cigar-loving leader, Colonel John "Hannibal" Smith, died in 1994. Meanwhile, Dirk Benedict (Lieutenant Templeton "Face" Peck) and Dwight Schultz (Captain H.M. "Howling Mad" Murdoch) have only worked sporadically in recent years, doing voiceovers for videogames and the occasional, usually forgettable feature.

But there's a possibility that The A-Team's most popular performer, Mr. T, aka 52-year-old Laurence Tureaud, might put in an appearance. Mr. T shot to icon status thanks to his role as Mohawk-sporting muscleman B.A. "Bad Attitude" Baracas and the trademark phrase "I pity the fool," before fading into has-been status as a 1-800-COLLECT pitchman.

"Mr. T and I had lunch last week, and I'd really like to have him in the movie, although we haven't begun casting," Cannell tells Variety. "I always think it's nice to see the stars of the old show in cameo roles in the movie. But obviously he won't be playing B.A. Baracus."

While Feirstein gets to work on The A-Team, Cannell's is also busy adapting his Gen-X police drama 21 Jumpstreet into a feature film (though it's unlikely Johnny Depp would reprise the role that made him a Tiger Beat pinup). The producer, who also created The Rockford Files, Wiseguy, The Commish and Hunter, also has a deal with MGM to turn his novel King Con into a movie.

"In 1972 a crack commando unit was sent to prison by a military court for a crime they didn't commit. These men promptly escaped from a maximum security stockade to the Los Angeles underground. Today, still wanted by the government, they survive as soldiers of fortune. If you have a problem, if no one else can help, and if you can find them, maybe you can hire the A-Team."

I still have the action figures and model cars!

I read ages ago Clooney was going to be Hannibal and wanted Mike Tyson as BA

Tyson role suits him to a 'T'
By This is London

Mike Tyson has been thrown a new career challenge that may suit him to a 'T'. Boxing fan George Clooney has offered bankrupt Tyson a multi-million dollar deal to star in a remake of the hit television series A-Team.

Tyson's role in the film would be that of Sergeant BA Baracus, originally played by a gold chain-draped Mr T. Clooney will play A-Team leader Hannibal Smith.

A Hollywood source said: "Mike is blown away by the offer. He sees it as a way of making a fresh start. If it works out, George will be his saviour."

Meanwhile, the talk in America was of promoter Don King seeking to sign Tyson as the opponent for George Foreman's comeback to the ring at the age of 55.

However, if Tyson does swap the big ring for the big screen then Joe Bugner is ready to trade leather with Big George. The 53-year-old fancies his chances, pointing out: "I went the distance twice with Muhammad Ali. He couldn't. Muhammad was not able to stop me but he stopped George."

Can't see how the high pitched voice and the lisp would go down well :?

That would just ruin it totally. Better actors out there who can play Baracus....

Mike isn't such a bad actor. Did you see him in Black and White with Robert Downey Jnr.?

That was some funny shit.

maybe...maybe not. BA didnt say all that much in the show and Mike has the same kind of build as him.
It would be funny to see Tyson with the BA hair cut!

"Ain't getting on no plane..... ZZZZZ"

Remember....

In 1972 four green berets were sentenced by a military court for a crime they didn't commit.

They promptly escaped to the L.A underground where today they survive as soldiers of fortune.

If you need help, and you can find them, and no one else can help....

maybe you can hire.... THE A TEAM
