McGuire to return to Eels
STEELE TAYLOR | 28th September 2010

AFTER 12 years plying his trade in the NRL and in Super League, Kawana's Casey McGuire will return to where he made his first grade breakthrough.

McGuire, 30, will link with Parramatta next season, in a move many Eels fans hope will revive the club's premiership aspirations after its disappointing season.

McGuire made his NRL debut with the Eels in 1998.

He played two games with the club before joining the premiership-winning Brisbane Broncos and then Perpignan outfit Catalans Dragons.

The 183cm, 92kg utility has been with the Dragons since 2007 and captained the team but is expected to return home next month.

“He's decided to come back and be closer to the Sunshine Coast and to family,” McGuire's father Danny said yesterday.

“He likes Parramatta, the club and the people there.”

A Queensland State of Origin player in 2005, McGuire is expected to bolster the ball-playing ranks at the Eels, who will be looking for some added spark after the highly fancied team finished 12th this season.

“He could play five-eighth or hooker or halfback,” Danny McGuire said.

McGuire will return to Parramatta after welcoming two boys to his family in France.

“Two of them went over and four of them are coming back,” Danny said.

McGuire experienced mixed fortunes at the Dragons. The club had some strong performances before finishing with the wooden spoon this year.

“They didn't have a very good season but made the preliminary final the year before and they made the Challenge Cup final while he was there,” Danny said.

McGuire qualified for the French national team under the three-year residency rule but declared he was unavailable for Les Tricolours after a hectic season last year.

He was a centre when he played for us IIRC.

So Stephen Kearney has been advising Ozzie for months or is this another Board decision away from the coaching staff ?

The only one I can think of is Andrew Ryan, but he is pretty entrenched at the Dogs.

T-Rex ? Wolfman ?

It is noit all bad, can't say I have seen him play in a long time, but had least he will bring some experience in the key position of 5/8 and hooker. Our biggest problem this year apart from no half back was lack of experience. There was no real pressure from our NSW cup to force changes in the NRL side, with casey, webb, reni and shackleton (coming back) we have some real additional experience added to the squad. And I am sure the first 3 didn't cost the world. I like it.

I have no problem with this signing as long as he came relatively cheap, experienced and can cover a number of positions.

Well he's not going to shift his family of 4 to Sydney from France for $55k is he ?

hardly inspiring for me but as long as we didn't shell out heaps of dough it not a bad signing for depth
