What exactly does United mean when applied to a football team? Look at Manchester United. I used to believe that it meant there was only the one team in the city, in this case Manchester.

So what exactly does it mean? Anyone with a solid understanding?

I'm not certian about thw whole 'United' thing, the same could be said about 'Rovers' and 'Hotspur'. As for the manchester thing, Manchester United are a team based in Manchester, but with fans from all over the globe. Manchester City are also a team based in Manchester, but actually represent the people of Manchester.

Some good points there, Weasels. But I am not just referring simply to the big time clubs. I refer also to the smaller ones where you might have districts with no more than 10,000 people yet there are teams in there called xyz United. Sometimes there are North xyz United and West xyz United. I think some of these teams probably just like the sound/ring of it.

From here:

United
United means that all the members have decided to 'unite' under the same banner. They are committed to the same cause. They are 'united'. For example, there were a number of clubs playing in Newcastle in the 1880s, including Newcastle East End and Newcastle West End. When East End took over the St James' Park ground of West End in 1892 it was decided to adopt a new name that would bring together all the supporters in the city. Hence Newcastle United. In other cases, clubs adopted the name because they liked its sense of purpose. Most famously, Newton Heath FC changed their name to Manchester United in 1902.

For sure. that would be the more modern clubs who use it for the sound and the tradition of other teams.
