Media pressure: Referee overhaul including video, ref bunker and two ref system

The game is so much faster these days than in the past. I think that is why refs are struggling, they just can't keep up with everything happening on the field

2 refs hasn't helped so not sure what the answer is, but as long as the game keeps getting quicker, the pressure on referees will continue to increase

Greenberg reckons it's difficult because referees have to make hundreds of decisions throughout a game . . . therein lies the problem. Instead of searching for decisions to make, mainly to justify their existence, they should only interrupt the game for many seconds when it is unavoidable.

Half the stoppages could be made neglible by declaring misdemeanors as 'pick up the ball and play on' when there is no obvious culprit. Knock-ons have to be genuine knock-ons advancing the ball towards an opposition tryline. If the referees concentrated more on the art of calling 'held' at the appropriate time and dismissed the trivial bits players wouldn't be getting injured as much and the game would flow

Stop the video ref showing incidents on the screen when players lay down. If the ref has missed it, too bad.

Stop the edict that a ref has to make a ruling of try or no-try before going to the video ref. If they're going to judge it, let them do it fairly.

Don't ever allow a ref to go to the video ref when not judging a try-scoring situation.

This is the shit that f**king makes me rage the most. Players are to blame just as much as the refs for this shit, lying down every opportunity they get, f**king disgusting.

I agree with this. This whole situation about not enough evidence to overturn a decision even when by common sense, there is enough is worse than Benefit of the Doubt.

Yes, they started staying down a lot more often when they knew it would be shown on the big screen and a ref was likely to issue a penalty. And every slap about the face seems to earn a head-high penalty. So we miss some penalties, granted, but no system is perfect. Better to leave it to the MRC as long as they can get some half-competent people in there.

Yes, the Souths no-try on the weekend was surely a try. Without the enforced no-try ruling by the ref, it would have been awarded. Refs have too much sway on results as it is, let's try to remove it.

To be fair the video ref this year has been worse than the on field one. There will always be mistakes by officials.

There will always be mistakes by refs. And there will always be controversies. But if we are going to go to the video ref, let's not make his job harder by not only having to rule on the try but also make a judgement on what is "clear evidence".

I don't understand the bunker concept. What do they mean when they say it's used to make in-game decisions?

Does that mean that they have some refs watching the game live and calling forward passes, offsides etc through to the on-field refs? :?

I'm very happy about this, but it never ceases to amaze me how easily the media continue to manipulate the NRL.

They should start by banning sponsored video ref decisions. It is tasteless and unnecessary.

I wouldn't be surprised if there isn't a min video, ref decision agreement in the sponsorship. Some of the decisions that get sent upstairs you wonder how four officials didn't see it?

I think it just means that when they go to the "video ref" then it will be the same people ruling on all games. Currently when we go to video ref it's different guys at each game.

So, no to the forward passes and offsides etc.

As a fan of the NHL which does the central video review stuff, I can tell you - you get just as many 'WHAT THE f**k ARE THEY WATCHING?!' moments.

Do you know what would help? If they didn't decide change the rules every year!

... Sorry every couple of weeks!
