Melbourne Storm's Legacy

Anyway, I do hope this thread doesn't get derailed by the Salary Cap cheating stuff - It's nice to have dialogue about the Storm that doesn't immediately turn back there - but I also understand why people are still shitty about it.

This thread, and any other discussion regarding the Melbourne Storm, should always include the Salary Cap cheating stuff.

It should be top of mind for every fan of NRL (especially Manly and Parramatta fans), anyone else that can spell the word integrity, and never ever ever ever forgotten.

Which is why I think we should all hug, forgive and move on.

As a supporter, I feel the club has underachieved when it comes to winning premierships. Given their dominance during the regular season they've probably lost one grand final too many since 2011. But let's be honest, top four in all years bar one since then and rarely miss out on a prelim - all things considered it's been a good run.

Bellamy’s presser after the defeat was sublime. I didn’t need to listen to Madge’s account. The season officially ended when Craig criticised his players for not tackling the chosen one.

A Melbourne Storm thread by gar its been a while.

Couldn't care less they still display their trophies. Doesn't mean anything on the record books. Cracks me up how much it makes people sulk so I hope they keep doing it. History shows they were stripped premierships, that's all that matters imo. Media listing Smith or anyone else with 5 Premierships is kind of bizarre though, an outsider supporting that narrative makes considerably less sense.

As for legacy, best club of the last 15 years, not the best team though - 2017 would go close.

Should have won more comps is an argument worth discussing but I'm curious which ones anyone thinks they should have won. Hard to disagree on paper that they've failed in big games.

2016 & 2025 very similar, up against teams with much more hunger but still went down to the wire.

2021, Bellamy f**ked up with his team selection and paid the price with an early injury - same as Panthers 2025 really.

2018, they were favourites but in hindsight I'm not really sure why. Maybe the impact a professional like Cronk would have on a club was underestimated.

Off the top of my head, that leaves 2024 of realistic Premiership chances. Up against 3x Premiers. Not their worst loss even if they were comprehensively outplayed.

On paper two consecutive GF losses never look great. But this years' Premiership run by the Broncos is up there with some of the best unfortunately. Week 1 the Minor Premiers and underrated challengers, 4x Premiers having a comeback season of their own and then, to quote Adam Reynolds or whoever it was during their speech (and to piss off Panther fans) "the benchmark" in the GF. One of the greatest.

Once Bellamy retires it might ease a bit. He is the last remaining from that era. As mentioned by others if they ditched the replica trophies it would go along way.

On one hand I agree that it would be harder to forgive for Manly and Parra fans, but on the other Manly have a few trophies off the back of arguably worse shit than the Storm did. Storm cheated to keep what they built for the most part, Manly pulled some pretty underhanded shit to gut other teams. Some of Bozo's shennanigans around rep spots should be as big a black mark in the games history as the Dogs and Storm cheating. But he is an "immortal" so his name can't be sullied.

Parra well, they tried the same, but their effort was just hilarious.

I think I'm in the minority where despite what they did I still have a huge amount of respect for them being able to consistently instill fear into other teams by completely dominating them for 10+ years.

Broncos & Warriors have been on the wrong side of that ledger for a long time. Most of the time beaten mentally before a ball has even been kicked.

Their ability to pick off the right kind of player coming through the grades is a big reason why the Broncos drought lasted as long as it did. Bellamy is also the GOAT of turning plodders into consistent first graders.

In saying that I hope the worm has finally turned and teams refuse to be subjugated by them.

For me, their legacy is of excellence. You cannot win a premiership every year (though Penrith have disproved that theory in recent times). Bellamy certainly gives his teams a good chance to win titles by simply contending every year.
Their second great legacy is turning rejects and journeymen into very good first graders. Broncos have a massive nursery, Easts spend up (although their nursery is not that bad), Penrith have a great nursery. Melbourne largely create good players from rejects and journeymen.....and that takes good coaching. No other club has ever done this as good as Melbourne. He squeezes every ounce of ability from his players.

Cheating.

They ended our season in 07, 08 and 09...the years they cheated the cap. So I used to be pissed about it.

Nowadays I have tiny respect for doing what it takes to win. Also, we beat them in 2 grand finals so that helps.

But yeah, cheating.

They smashed Hunt into an alternate universe.

Finally dispensing justice for all of the wronged SGI fans and their friends.

Only the hardest heart would deny that this righteous and long overdue blow completed them as footy fans this season.

Show some respect and be thankful for the category 10.

So long as it’s not permanent of course.

Albo should award a knighthood to whoever flattened him.
