Looks pretty good. The Storm and Rugby League in general would benefit greatly out of this. It says on the website that it's built in 2009 (I assume that's proposed) but no mention of when it'll be completed or opened.

While we're on the topic of Rugby League in Melbourne, just in case anyone missed it, QLD will move game 1 to Melbourne next year for Origin.

I prefer stadiums that have something different about their design. Many of the English soccer stadiums all look the same and hard to tell which city it is. Will be a great RL venue and will see the Storm increase their crowds dramatically (if they can keep a winning side on the field).

Will be great to see Melbourne Victory playing in front of near capacity crowds every week instead of that blight on melbourne the dome.

The Melbourne Rectangular Stadium doesn't open until December 2009, so the Storm will play out of Olympic Park all of next year.

Brian Waldron was talking about it on The Sunday Footy Show and said that they will be able to cater to an additional 700 corporate guests, and that it will bring the facilities into line with those at the MCG and Telstra Dome, which is what Victorians expect when attending national competitions. It should go along way to increase the Storm's financial viability.

It will be interesting to see what happens when the Storm play finals games after 2009. Will they play out of the new ground with a capacity of 31,000 , or still move games to the Telstra Dome to potentially fit in an additional 20,000. If the new Stadium is successful in building their ticketed membership they may outgrow being able to use it for finals.

The Storm won't have a say in it. It'll be the NRL that decides.

The Storm will have a say in it. I'm sure someone will correct me if i'm wrong but as far as i know the only critera in place at the moment is that grounds in weeks 2-3 of the finals have hold a minimum of 25,000 seats. If that's the case the new stadium passes that comfortably.

Is it even 25000?

How many does the Warriors home ground seat?

Regardless, a 31000 seat stadium would be fine for week 2.

looks like they will use the demolished parts of the beijing olympics stadiums to contruct this - luckily it's only 30k odd seater anymore and the nrl would play grandfinals down there as after all they loooooove the storm the nrl as they give them more than a leg up

No they don't. Week 1 they do, but not Weeks 2-3. Weeks 2-3 is Home City to the highest rating side. The NRL decides what ground to use. Although they'll likely use the new stadium.

Of course the NRL get the final say but like i said it fits the minimum seating requirements so it's a non issue and they wouldn't have to decide anything based on that. It is home city in weeks 2-3 and from my understanding the only reason Sydney games get transferred ANZ/SFS is because the suburban grounds don't hold enough people.

I'm still left wondering why it's taking so long to build...

Skilled Park, announced around the same time as this puppy, has been finished for almost a year.

Skilled Park is simple single tier stadium with a capacity of 27,000, built at an area that is (currently) sparsely occupied.

The Melbourne Rectangular Stadium is Multi-tier stadium with a capacity of 32,000, that will house the administrative offices of the Storm and Victory, and is being constructed near the centre of the city. It was always going to take longer to construct.

What BrisVegas said above. But you can also question the arseclowns that are the Melbourne Victory on why it's taken so long. They ummed, ahhed and basically f**ked around holding the government and all other tenants to ransom for over a year threatening to not use the Stadium after originally agreeing to the planned number of seats.

The government got jack of them like everyone else and announced that they were going to build the stadium with or without them at the higher capacity and it was only then they signed on. So over a year, almost $80m more than the original cost we'll have our new stadium ready in the last month of next year providing there's no delays.

Seriously, yes it's a more complicated stadium.

But the time discrepancy is way beyond resonable for the situation.

Stop spreading lies you baboon. Victory is the only reason this stadium isnt 20,000, which says alot about the Storm :lol::lol:

There is no way this stadium was going at 31k without the Victory...keep dreaming. You've clearly dished that out of your a***, as its common knowledge that Victory are the reason that the stadium is 31k (hence the delays).

Suck it up, the government knows Victorys acceptance matters much more than the Storms. So once again, stop spreading lies plonker. :sarcasm::lol:
