Been out of the scene for a number of years.. Used to like to listen to Kreator, Pantera, Slayer then a bit later on Spineshank and non point..

Been watching the metal show on chanel V to try and catch up on the scene now days..

All i have seen so far is complete copies of what i used to listen to in the late 80's from this scene...

Anyone hlep me with suggestions on what is that little bit different but going to kick my ar*e like the above mentioned bands always did? Something that has some twists and turns and has a bit of an epic sound to it always helps..

I actually really liked Slipknot as well but that opinion always draws criticism for some reason...

Suggestions for an old metal head to get back into it?

Most metal coming out these days (in the mainstream) is utter rubbish in my opinion. All this metal core garbage and and boring crap with 'death' vocals.

I've been VERY impressed with what Amon Amarth have been doing though. I think they stand above the rest of the other popular metal acts like Kids of Bodom etc. Check out their album 'With Oden On Our Side'.

A great Power Metal band is Heavenly (but not everyone gets into power metal).

Plenty of good black metal still around. Tsjuder, Dark Throne, Gospel of the Horns etc. but you may not like that either.

I dig folky metal bands like Finntroll and Korpiklaani, and to a lesser extent Ensiferum, Tyr, Moonsorrow etc...

I'd recommend just listening to the old metal stuff though because a lot of the new stuff sucks.

Okay mate, here we go:

I was going to name Opeth but elyod beat me to it. However, absolutely get some Opeth, it's a must! My fav is Morningrise but as a starting point try either Blackwater Park or Ghost Reveries - both excellent albums.

Devin Townsend. Now, you can either go his 'heavy' band Strapping Young Lad who are like Fear Factory on speed, or Devin's solo stuff which can be heavy but not AS heavy and certainly more melodic. Try the album Ocean Machine.

Amon Amarth was mentioned too. Great band. I recommend Fate of Norns. Now, they're a bit heavier than what you may be used to - they're death metal after all - but they're nowhere near as heavy as many death metal bands. I would call them viking death metal - still very melodic and quite epic too.

Getting heavier, the mighty Immortal - one of the original black metal bands from Norway. If you like your big riffs (albeit with heavier vocals), buy Immortal's At The Heart of Winter or Sons of Northern Darkness. Brilliant, brilliant band.

For black metal that's more symphonic and a bit more modern, perhaps Dimmu Borgir.

Otherwise, for your muddier, older and more atmospheric traditional black metal, try Darkthrone. I don't think you're ready for Emperor yet.

Back to DM, try Nile. Heavy as hell. Think Morbid Angel but a bit less 'sludgy' if that makes sense.

For death-doom, My Dying Bride are very good. Get 'Turn Loose The Swans'.

Now I'm with Trollhammeren when it comes to the American hardcore and metalcore scene. 99% is utter garbage.

But if you must go there, perhaps Killswitch Engage are one of the better options.

However, a close cousin that is infinitely better is your melodic death metal - bands like In Flames (The Jester Race, Clayman or Whoracle - steer clear of their newer crap) or Soilwork (Predator's Portrait).

Also I suggest Dark Tranquility.

As a general rule, European metal tends to be far superior to American metal (with some notable exceptions).

Look for bands from Norway and Sweden. Oh, Finland too. Fintroll are very good, so are Farmakon. I don't know how to describe this music but it makes you think of elves in the forest.

Now let's try for the likes of Nightwish - epic metal with a chick singer and some amazing riffs.

Okay, I'm forgetting hundreds of bands but that's a start...

Hevy dev is your man for this situation.

Morningrise sounds like an old 70's surf type band.

...but I must agree they all sound like the cookie monster to me...except Dev T's solo gear which wasn't too bad actually.

Yeah I know Spineshank but they're definitely not my thing.

Basically a nu-metal band - the lowest of lows.

Oh, by the way nice baiting Carcharias. :D

I don't really put spineshank in the nu metal category.. Each to their own though i suppose.. You wouldn't like non point then either..

i've also been enjoying Threat Signal a lot lately... they've been classed as metalcore by some.. but i'd almost call them melodic death tbh.

HEY
I am serious.

I listened to Dev's solo gear that you told me about and it was pretty good.

The slower mellow stuff was good....a little spooky at times but still good.

Well there is a fine line between melodic death and hardcore really albeit a noticable difference for the metal fan.

Let's face it, In Flames were once a great MDM band but have since become a hardcore band and are quite crap.

Yeah he can be incredibly atmospheric, it's one of his greatest traits.

Anybody got any Pantera-esque recommendations?

I just had a listen to Entombed, Damageplan, Killswitch Engage and Down. Don't dig any of 'em.

I need -

1. Hard hitting, choppy, brutally precise riffs.
2. No cookie monster vocals.
3. Audible bass.
4. Some semblance of melody.

PS I'm already aware of (and love) Slayer & Machine Head.

If you want riffs, try Children of Bodom, Fear Factory, Immortal, Strapping Young Lad, early In Flames, Amon Amarth etc.

Immortal are absolutely superb but not sure if you'll like the vocals at all. Still, have a listen to Solarfall and Tragedies Blow on Horizons. Also, Antarctica off their Sons of Northern Darkness album.

Anyone else a fan of Primordial? They're an Irish band who've been around for ages (they recently released their 6th studio album) who play a really unique brand of metal, really epic sounding stuff with a mixture of harsh and clean vocals and a distinct Celtic influence without ever sounding "folky". They're probably my favourite band of the moment.

Bolt Thrower "Those Once Loyal' and "Honour Valour Pride" It has "Cookie monster vocals" but the melody, the riffs and the bass guitar are outstanding
