Metcalf v Boyd v CHT

whoever plays in the halves right now is going to look like a champion cos the props/middle are killing it
Very true, but not necessarily god level like Boyd is at.

He absolutely owned the first 20-30 minutes of the Roosters game when it was at parity, and hasn't looked back since.

TBH, I don't find it clear at all. The simple facts are he was a journeyman half (mid 20s) who hit a purple patch last year before being injured. No one has any idea whether he could have continued that form even through the rest of the season, let alone through the rest of his career. He has also suffered an injury that may well reduce his key asset - his speed.

I must say good on him for cashing in when the opportunity has presented itself.

While all those things are true, if you look at the market across the seventeen teams it becomes very clear why clubs are chasing halves that can turn games.

There just aren't many better options, so when a guy like Metcalf with all his risk factors is leading the Dally M's and winning games with clutch plays comes on the market - then he is just commanding the going rate.

Atm the game is in somewhat of a dire state for halves, old guys like Reynolds and DCE are holding down jobs that in the past their younger selves would have pushed them out of the way (excuse the confusing time loop but you get what I mean).

This is where McFadden is a genius. He has been buying up the Junior halves market, so much so that the Warriors have become the bank of future halves talent and can hold the competition to ransom.

People keep talking about the forward depth in the Warriors pathway, but that ain't the real story here, our insane junior half depth is the secret sauce the NRL scene has completely missed the significance of.

Cleary seems to be a prospect (although I expect him to go back to Daddy) Jack Thompson is definitely a prospect, Cassius Tia is an out of the blue surprise get on a development contract (highly rated, his highlights as far as Seven skills and game management goes are off the charts - he is big, not slow, rugged, kicks 40/20s and drop goals, and those aren't even exciting stuff he does).

Then there is Jae Linane who we haven't seen but is a speed guy - and even fairly Vanilla players like Hanson are proving NRL ready when called upon.

Lets not forget how talented this five eight Harry Inch looks either, he is going to play NRL when he learns league if he sticks around in the game, I have no doubt about that.

While other clubs typically have one or two genuinely exciting junior halves in their pathways we have almost all of the cream under McFadden's strategy.

If Metcalf is a bust, it is not really a problem for us, Boyd's style of play, the platform he creates affords anyone playing alongside (CNK, CHT, Egan, Hanson) in just the last 14 days or so...that's crazy.

Yes.

But lets not ignore that when the Warriors have struggled to get out of their end and look in trouble with the game in the balance - Tanah Boyd alone has made the difference with his boot, whether that be a 40/20 or a massive down town boot when we are on our own thirty meter line tackle five (like against Newcastle in the critical period before half time).

Which is why Boyd, for mine, does not get to wear that excuse of being made to look good with dominant ruck play.

We had four players dehydrated in that game, all cramping up, Boyd got them through with not just long kicks, but well placed kicks, and he has done that three weeks in a row, teams just can't sustain pressure against that.

And commentary has been the same every game "Tanah Boyd has kicked them to death"

Metcalf to me is the sort of player that should come back through the reggies especially when the side is going well

I can see Webster naming him on the bench when fit and bringing him on at six while CHT slots into Dummy half.

Not saying that is what I would do because I am only clear on one point, and that is Boyd is our halfback.

Enjoying all the discussion on this topic but full disclosure I do not have a clue what to do or what is best with CHT and Metcalf's situation....it's too complicated for me tbh and Webster will always do something better...

He's had every opportunity to play well, yes... but he has, and his all around game has been spot on... there's no reason at this point to bring in anyone over him... it won't all be smooth sailing of course

What we do know about Boyd now is this, if Metcalf does replace him and hits form, then we have a ready replacement if he doesn't last the season.

Martin's coming back too. We've sort of forgotten about him. He covers halves and hooker, as we know. When he's in form he's bloody good.

Yes Boyd has the benefit of a very good forward pack....(perhaps best in comp...I said it out loud so its gunna come and bite me) and therefore he has space and on front foot. But he is something we have not had in an organising 1/2. Someone to steer around the pack. They have trained for this. I'm presuming Webby must have trained for Metcalf. Tough he did say in the presser, 'you can't plan too far ahead in this game.'

6. Metcalf
7. Boyd

CHT to the bench to play a Dylan Walker type role.
There really is no other way to cut it, it would be criminal to drop Boyd now + we know Luke can play 6.

I'm actually really excited to see what a Luke/Tanah pairing can do.

Webster is stubborn with some things though. I can see him saying “Luke is our 7”. He has done it with Charnze

Hope he's learnt to be a little more flexible.

He was insistent on bringing back SJ back in '24 as well, while TMM was riding that 3 game hot streak after Magic Round. Was arguably the form half of the comp at the time... until Webster parachuted SJ straight in (still injured as it turned out) and the hot streak came to a shuddering halt with two straight losses and TMM only a shadow of the player he was before.

Admittedly the first of those was against Melbourne (who could also be Metcalf's comeback game ironically...) but the next was the 60 point car crash v Titans.

If Boyd and CHT keep doing the job, I really hope Metcalf doesnt get dropped straight in. That's not being critical of him, but there's an assumption he'll immediately play the same way he did last year before the injury, when realistically the chances of that happening straight after an ACL are very very slim.

If we suddenly tank in the next fortnight then sure, take the punt. But if we're 5-0 and the CHT is playing well, we risk repeating the TMM scenario.

Yes Boyd has been blessed with a good forward pack, but we know from recent Warriors history that we are more than capable of dominating through the middle and doing nothing with it. Shaun Johnson's entire 2024 season was a shining example of that, behind AFB and Barnett who were the best prop duo in the game. Being able to turn forward dominance into points is not guaranteed.

Yeah, he persisted with the little man bench for too long, and arguably was forced into doing away with it through injury. But he didn't revert back to it so that's a positive.

Boyd is a good player. He has benefited from all the training reps through the preseason. He didn't get those last season (certainly nowhere near what he got this off season). That was proven in his performances last year. It's a nice headache to have.

At the start of the season, i'd say Metcalf would take us further in the competition than Boyd would have. Right now, I'd say that Boyd is undroppable. That may change in 2 weeks or 2 months. Nobody knows.

Metcalf is one of our top paid players but the team really looked unstructured and lost their way in the 2 games he played. Yes he hasn’t played for a very long time.

Until Boyd and CHT have a couple of poor games we should stick with them and Metcalf should come off the bench first last 15 mins when he is back from injury.

Te Maire Martin is expected back in a month or so. There's so much going on with our halves discussions and his return will be a healthy addition.

I always reckoned a couple of Cup games first would be good for him and I still believe that.

Rusty or otherwise he'll probably carve up there, so aside from not disrupting a winning team, it'd build confidence in his body and general play. If the mental side is a massive part of the game at the elite level, why not prioritise that.

It might seem like a demotion but Webster's a smart dude, I'm sure he can position it in a way so that it doesn't feel like a negative.
