IIRC he completely belted Bangladesh around in a two test series in the top end. Boosted his average big time. Was ok but ready to go against the Indians.

Taylor scored 420 odd runs in one test.

but they all count.

Ponting's last double ton saw him dropped a million times.

I remember reading somewhere on this forum years ago that Tugga (and also Border) were both "forced" into retirement by the selectors (hence why Tugga announced his retirement before the start of the test series vs India). Is there any truth to this or not?

I always found it strange that Border didn't go around for one more year (given he played two more summers for Queensland after international retirement) with the upcoming home 1994/95 Ashes and once last chance to break the Windies 20yr dominance a couple of months later (which we did), and ended his career on a somewhat quiet note in South Africa. Dean Jones also retired after the South African tour (although he made an unsuccessful comeback out of retirement in order to make the 1996 World Cup squad via Australia A matches during 1995/96 season), and Merv Hughes found himself on the outer with the selectors after that tour over the incident in the Johannesburg test where him and Warne got fined due to behaviour. With McGrath and Fleming rising in the fast-bowling ranks, Hughes was dropped and never got back into the side after that tour (despite an attempt for Australia A the following summer), whereas Warne was irreplaceable and hence why he kept his spot.

Certainly at the time the media, and both Waugh and Border's behaviour suggested they were being encouraged to move on - I thought it was disrespectful to treat two unarguable greats of the game that way - and perhaps a sign of complacence/arrogance in that they believed there would be an endless supply of outstanding talent to take the spots - clearly that's not the case (Windies faced the same), and I can't believe they actually believed that give the struggles Border and Simpson had to resurrect Australian cricket (in relative terms, you weren't that awful, just pretty much every other country had very good sides)

Border had probably had enough but I remember reading his book and he said he felt like they rushed him into making his decision. He was 40 at the time, Waugh no doubt was being pressured as well him and Hohns never quite saw eye to eye and he would have got the bullet earlier of not for his great 100 at the SCG. Waugh deserved another chance to win in India and Ponting end up being injured anyway. I thought both of them were treated quite poorly compared with how long guys like Ponting, Taylor and Hayden got at the back end of their careers. Taylor could barely hit a ball off the square yet the Chairman Rogers was still trying to convince him to play on. Taylor was the ultimate Board yes man and I got that a little from Ponting as well.

Back in those days especially Tuggers there was a glut of talent in shield Hussey is an example but there were heaps. Fast forward to now and there is barely anything.

Clarke did well to get us back to top spot in the test rankings and getting the most out of Johnson, Lyon, Warner and his field placings. I can't see us staying up there.

I'm not sure how much of a board yes man Ponting was considering the board and the players barely spoke for years and years after monkeygate.

Ponting was happy for Roy to take the brunt just because the board didn't want India to piss off home. Symonds was never the same player again. Pretty sure if AB or Waugh were in that situation they would have told the board to go jump in support of their teammate and friend.

You are incorrect lol

It destroyed the relationship between Ponting and the board. Also AB was literally on the board that accepted the downgrade.
