Just been tipped off that the Bradford Bulls second rower has signed for Penrith. Good luck to him if and when this is confirmed.

Is he any good?

No, he's not held in a very high regard by the Bradford fans. A lot of bemused people asking if it's April 1st already and what happened to Christmas.

My first reaction was:

Hahahahahahahahahahahaha.

When I realised it wasn't actually a joke, my next reaction was that Worrincy to the NRL is actually one of the signs of the Rugby League apocalypse.

Wonder how much Bradford had to pay Penrith in compensation.

Martin Offiah needs to be sent out to the middle east. If anyone can pull off the peace process, it's the man who got Michael Worriency an NRL contract.

And its not even April 1st. I bet the guy can't beleive his luck.

I notice neither the BBC, SportingLife or Sky Sports have reported this on their websites yet. I wonder if even they're thinking it's a prank....

The Bradford fans are delighted. He is a well put together player, athletic, reasonably small but obviously worked hard in the gym. His career at Bradford has seen him become someone known for defensive lapses and dropping the ball in attack. He always reminds me of what would happen if you took an olympic athlete and threw them into a professional rugby league game. He looks lost, like every game is his debut and he's out of his depth.

The physical potential is there for him to be a good player, but he'll need a lot of work to achieve anything like NRL standard. I'd put a bet now on him never appearing in first grade.

Mike Worrincy will join the NRL’s growing English contingent after today completing a move to Penrith Panthers.
The back-rower has penned a one-year deal with the Sydney-based club after Bradford agreed to release him from the final year of his contract.
Although Worrincy only recently signed the 12-month extension, the club decided not to stand in his way once an opportunity arose to link up with the Panthers, who are coached by former Bulls boss Matt Elliott.
In heading down under, the 24-year-old follows in the footsteps of former Odsal team-mate Sam Burgess, who joined South Sydney Rabbitohs in a blockbuster deal last year.
England star Gareth Ellis has been an overwhelming success at Wests Tigers, where he plays alongside another ex-Bull in Mark Flanagan, and Worrincy is hopeful the switch can have a positive effect on his career.
“It’s a good opportunity for me and I’m looking forward to getting out there and seeing how they do things,” he said.
“I’ve got some good friends at Bradford and I’ll leave with a bit of sadness but I’ve got a chance to go over there and better myself as a player.
“I’ll meet new people from different walks of life and get involved with a different approach to the game.
“I’ve had a few conversations with Matty Elliott and he’s just keen for me to go there and have a go. If I put in the work, he’s told me he’ll give me my chance.”
A product of the Harlequins academy, Worrincy joined the Bulls ahead of the 2009 season and went on to score 13 tries in 50 appearances for the club.
“Opportunities for players from this federation to test themselves in the NRL don’t come along very often,” said Bulls chairman Peter Hood.
“So when Michael got his chance we certainly didn’t wish to stand in his way. We thank Michael for his efforts and wish him the very best of success down under.”
The departure of the athletic back-rower, coming hot on the heels of Danny Sculthorpe’s exit earlier this week, frees up room under the salary cap for Bradford to further strengthen their squad.
Ten new faces have arrived already but coach Mick Potter’s recruitment drive continues, with a new stand-off still the priority.
Hood also refused to rule out a move for disgraced former Australian Test star Joel Monaghan, who resigned from Canberra Raiders on Tuesday.
The 28-year-old outside back is seeking a move to Super League in the wake of an off-field scandal and early favourites for his signature, Harlequins and Huddersfield, have already ruled themselves out of the running.
Hood said: “It’s a question for Mick Potter when he starts work on Monday. But the club is always interested in quality players, no matter where they may be.”
If the Bulls were to make a move for Monaghan, they would need to make space on their overseas quota, with Brett Kearney, Heath L’Estrange, Glenn Hall, Marc Herbert and Patrick Ah Van already on board for 2011. Of those, Hall has previously been linked with a move to Castleford.

The views of Michael's own fans (Bradford that is) are interesting to say the least.

That's how English fans are, they are very critical of certain players. I think with decent coaching Worrincy could prove to be quite a good signing because he has plenty of pace for a forward and has a fair try scoring record.
At 24yo he is at the right age to hit the peak of his career.

The most gifted of the Tia Kilifi's is the player the Panthers would hope would truly develop in the next season or two. While built low to the ground he is highly athletic, powerful and has pace very similar in style to the Sea Eagles Anthony Watmough. One would hope he will graduate to the top grade alongside the likes of the young Bryce Cartwright who is a potential superstar in the making. We do however have to hang onto both of them and that sadly is no certainty.

As for Michael Worrincy I think there is certainly merit in recruiting players form the ESL. Those who have been successful however have been established stars such Gareth Ellis, Sam Burgess and the former Roosters Star Adrian Morley. Really it's hard to see a fringe squad player such as Worrincy apparently is making the grade in the NRL. High quality players can make the step up but fringe players I am not so sure.

No one want's to put down any new signing before he has even laced a boot for the club but this signing based on what has been said already by supporters of his former club surely does not allow for much optimisim he will step straight into the top 17 and be a resounding success.

I watch a fair bit of ESL. He is like Paulo, Laurie, Gordon, Cuthbertson given he shows promise but getting him to do it for a whole game & Season is the challenge

Worrincy was rated by many as one of the worst players in ESL, but honestly he could go alright in the NRL. He's a very athletic player who runs great lines in attack, he's never recieved any sort of coaching and he has been playing in one of the worst teams in recent years. I don't know much about Penrith's halves but if he gets good service and someone putting the ball where he wants it he could be a very effective hole runner. On the other hand he is prone to making some pretty sloppy one-on-one misses leading to tries, although to be fair these are probably highlighted as he was easily identifiable as the only black player on the Bradford side. He doesn't drop the ball as often as people make out, and Bradford fans are notoriously bad at making scapegoats out of players who really don't deserve it so I wouldn't read anything into their comments.

He was awesome at Harlequins but then things went downhill a bit. he's not that fast as he runs like he's done something in his pants.
I don't think he drops the ball as much as Bulls fans say but he is a very good support player and has some meat behind him.

How old is Kilifi Tia Kilifi ? He is the younger one isnt he.. I think it is Vaipuna who scored a mountain of trys in Matts a few years back. He was like the leading try scorer.

Kilifi is in the age group above Vaipuna. So i would imagine he is 18/19.

Vaipuna is probably 17.

Junior is 22 and Akeripa is in next years HM squad.

I watched a bit of Worrincy on You tube. Not a lot there.

Basically a game against Leeds he ran a nice left to right angles run to score under the post. Similar to the type Gareth Ellis does.

Against Wigan he ran out of the line on a kick chase and Amos Roberts smoked straight passed him and ran for about 60m. On the positive side as soon as he was beaten Worrincy turned, chased and put himself in a position to make the tackle on Roberts up field.

In the same game, he also made a few strong hit-ups, carrying a few players with him, landing on his hands and knees and getting a quick play the ball. One time Jamie Langley made a nice bust up the middle off of a Worrincy quick play the ball.

Seems to have a good burst of speed, despite his awkward running style. To turn and keep up with Amos Roberts on the break was a fair effort and other times when Bradford made breaks he seemed to be right their ready to take the offload if needed.

Obviously I haven't watched him week in week out like others. But there are some positive signs there, from what I've seen. He's probably better suited to the more physical style of play in the NRL, than the more expanssive ESL game. There are definately things he needs to work on though.
